This is how I remembered him while growing up in KC. There, he earned the nickname "The Stump." Back then 265 pounds (Oilers playing weight) was huge.......and with KC, he played at 280.

Depends on the criteria. Played more games for the Oilers than anyone (Houston - 92, KC - 69, Det - 5), but started out with and won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs.

Pro Football HoF doesn't designate a team like Baseball does anyway.

Edit: Played 82 games for KC - not 69.

He made the Pro Bowl once with the Chiefs, and six times with the Oilers (4 times as first teamer, and twice as second teamer.)

He's an Oiler Pro Bowler and HOF.
The Chiefs got squat for not bringing him back, whatever the reason was.

So when the new league dissolved, the Chiefs who still carried rights to him, traded him to the Oilers for John Matuszack (DE-DT 6-8 272 lbs 1st pick of the 1973 NFL Draft)who also left the Oilers when he wasn't allowed to play for the WFL. (FYI for the HOUSTON TEXANS) and the NFL. Court injunctions disallowed these dual league playings.

Most people don't know that Culp (a 2nd round pick by Denver) was virtually given to KC by Denver because in his rookie training camp, Denver grew totally frustrated in their attempt to switch him to offense, a move they were forcing since they considered him too big for a DT/DE/LB.

my thoughts from 5 years ago...

My all time favorite player ever on defense was Dr Doom - Robert Brazille. He was a 7 time pro bowler who should be in the HOF. Curly Culp and Robert Brazille were the two best defensive players I've ever seen play live probably. There was no way one man could block Culp...he was just an impossible bear on the inside although he was considered undersized. The Oilers defense completely turned around when Sid Gillman traded John Matusak for Curly Culp and went to new defensive coodinator Bum Phillips newfangled 3-4. At the mid-point the team lost most of the games the season we traded for Culp but once Culp was in the middle the team went on to win most of their remaining games late in the year to finish up at .500. The Bum Phillips era was kicked off and the rest is history.

Brazile found immediate success with the Oilers, winning the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award for the 1975 season. He was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first seven seasons, was All-Pro 5 straight seasons (1976–80)[5] and was selected to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 1970s. He is the only linebacker from the 1970s All-Decade Team not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1978 and 1979, Brazile was a key member of Oilers teams that went to back-to-back AFC Championship games.

Let me say something good about John McClain. He has done an outstanding job in advocating ex-Oilers for the HOF. First Elvin Bethea, and now Culp. I expect Brazile to be his next project. McClain has pull in that room, and I think he will get the votes for Brazile, one year.

hopefully he was saving his easiest project for last. Brazile has more hardware than all of those guys. He was also a guy that was re-defining what an Outside linebacker looked like with his size and speed combination.
