coordinators or seasoned Head Coach

Just wondering what we going to accomplish,by Hiring Coordinators. (IMO) We have not had a winning season in the 4 seasons we have been a Team,we fired our Head coach. (needed to be done),shouldn't we be interviewing seasoned Head Coaches that have experience in bringing teams back to life? Instead of giving coordinators (Very excellent coordinators though) their first head coaching jobs.Maybe I am just writting with low blood sugar but wondering what others think.

Experienced Head Coaches? You mean like Dom Capers? :) :jk:

ummmm.NO!i mean like sherman,or martz,I really don't think of Capers as much more than a Def coordinator.Isn't that the position he had before and after carolina?Which makes my point that much more a reality,if we couldn't make it happen with a coordinator that held a head coaching pos in the past then why should it work with one that hasn't?you keep doing things the same way expecting different results it is a sign of insanity.:challenge

The big difference I see is that the Texans are bringing in a coordinator with a long history of success. I heard off of ESPN/Fox that he has 11 years under Shanahan. This is one of those moments where there is a guy who is deserving of the position, ready for the position, and is a good fit in Houston. We have offensive talent; we need a coach who can harness that talent.

Without a doubt.

Frankly I am really excited to possibly have Kubiak as our HC. I look at what he has done in Denver, and I can only imagine how he will turn things around here.

We need someone like him here to change the attitude of this team. I believe Kubiak is the right man to do it.

I like to have a Coordinator come in with fresh ideas backed with an OC or DC that had previous HC experience. Somewhere along the line it helps to have someone that has been there done that and garnered positive and negative experience to reflect upon.

Teams that hired Coordinators that turned the franchise around

Chicago--Smith
Cleveland--Crennell
Cinci--Lewis

Dungy was a Coord before TB

I have no issue hiring a first time HC.

I don't have a problem with them hiring Coach Kubiak but I do wonder if he's been such a hot property all these years why he hasn't already been a HC somewhere. Somebody said on one thread that he had turned down some jobs which makes me wonder why he would do that....it is a promotion after all....

My opinion doesn't matter and I'm hoping he turns out to be a great HC because the Texans HAVE to pick right on this coach or they'll really be in a hole for years.

I do give candidates the benefit of the doubt when it comes to work life balance issues such as family and preparing your self for the right job. I would venture to guess that Kubiak is in the position that is right for he and his family per his timetable and setting.

Norv Turner had a long history of success as an offensive coordinator.

No one knows how successful Kubiak will turn out to be. It's like draft picks. You can do all the research in the world, but in the end, it's still a dice roll.

The problem is that the very people who have been touting Kubiak the most, are the same ones who will have the least amount of patience.

Good post, I agree that Kubiak should be a great fit for Houston and hopefully turn our offensive woes around. One thing with past head coaches is that if they're unemployed, it's almost always because they failed to meet expectations somewhere else and were fired.

It's been said of Kubiak that he waited to pick his spot and time. It's reported that he is really only interested in coaching at Houston, A&M or Denver. The organization and the people there, means a great deal to him rather than just taking a promotion. Personally, I like that. The guy would be coming because he wants to, not just because it's the next thing to do on the career train. I think we may be getting the "Next Big Thing" in coaching. Sure hope so anyway. Probably take 2 years to get the team fully working in his system, but should see some nice improvement this next season.

Kubiak is as well qualified as a coordinator can get.

Every great coach starts out on the bottom and works their way up. From an honest standpoint, I believe Kubiak could be a guy who blasts his head coaching career off the ground here.

If guys like Bill Belichek were suddenly unemployed this offseason, I would say we should take them. But the fact is, most of the unemployed former HC's out there right now were fired for screwing up (more or less) on another team. A second chance and a change of scenery might help them, sure, but in this particular case, I would say that every one of these other guys was fired for due cause.

I'd rather take my chances on an up-and-comer who has proven he knows how to win and be successful over a long period of time, than a guy who was bounced out of his last post for incompetence. I am very comfortable handing this one off to Kubiak.

I believe it is more like an educated guess than a dice roll. Sometimes they turn out wrong, but I think that the Texans have done the best job they can to get the Texans the best Head Coach.

What makes it interesting is that there are all the threads about Reggie Bush's number and the miracles of Vince Young. The media is so intense on these two. But IMO, the past few weeks, we have made a much more important decision, which is the coach. I like to think that in the age of cap salaries, the coach is as important, if not more important, than draft picks.

And no, I don't think the people who have wanted Kubiak will be the first to want him canned. I think that is all wrapped up in last year's coaching debacle and the desperation for something, anything else.

Perhaps. I don't know enough and haven't cared about the Broncos so I'm not up on what he's thinking or saying.

I just found it a bit strange that a coordinator has turned down head coaching JOBS..plural. But yea ultimately it's his choice and so if that's true that's what he wanted and chose to do.

For the Texans sake I hope he's successful. This hiring is every bit as important as whichever player they take as number one.

yep, it's a crap shoot no matter who you get. Just being an experienced HC does not necessarily guarantee any measure of success.

What I like about getting a coordinator is the aggressive desire to prove themselves. With a guy like Kubiak, who already has championship experience as both a player and a coach on his resume, we get a coach that knows what it's like to play/coach on a winning team. He's familiar with the steps and discipline it takes to focus a team towards the same goal.

IMO, some of the "proven" coaches - ones that have already won Superbowls - seem to be coaching for financial reasons more than anything, because they have nothing left to prove.

Just remember, every seasoned head coach was an unproven coordinator at one time in their careers.

Yea true.

But if they don't get some improvement on the O-line and some help on the defense a genius isn't going to fix what's wrong with this team.

I'm also wondering if they are going to change their defense. For 4 years they've been getting players for the 3-4. So now do they switch? How long will that take?

the only thing that makes me a little nervous about all that is that the three of them are defensive coaches... Our offense was bad.. but our defense was horrible.
