Coleman is the worst!

It made me sick to watch him play last night. I have never seen such a poor exscuse for a defensive football player. (except P Buch)
And what was G-Funk screaming about when he came off the field? Does anyone know?

buchanon has been more than solid since his benching.

You're kidding, aren't you? You better be. If you taped the game, go watch it again. You'll hear the announcers say that very same thing I'm sayind as well as the other poster. The Raiders bashed Buchanon indicating that he could not block, defend or whatever. The Raiders were glad to see him go. In the beginning, I wasn't to sure that was a good move aquiring Buchanon, and I was right.
 
Coleman seems to have lost his passion for the game or at least for this team. It seems that he will be a cut this offseason. G-Funk was yelling cause he was pissed at the defense and also tired of running zones. That is just a guess on the last part.
 
Personally I thought Coleman looked better last night than he has in previous weeks. I'm not saying that he played well but he showed a little more effort than usual at times. I still want to see Brown and Glenn out there together for the majority of the rest of the year. It looked like Walker was yelling at Fangio like he was sick of the 3-4 cover 2 defense we've been running.

When we go to nickel packages we only have 2 linemen on the field...and we tend to get manhandled by the 5 offensive linemen on the other side. Peek and Babin don't have the size to help out the two linemen left on the field. I'd be mad too.
 
Generally a 3-4 is made to create pressure on the QB by having the three big DL occupy blockers and blitz LBs or DBs from different angles, but we rush one extra guy and constantly drop our other ILBs into middle zones which get destroyed every game and drop our safeties into two-deep coverage which likewise doesn't do much. When we go nickel we want a more traditional four man front and our regular DL are all big guys so they want more speed at DE so they bring Peek and Babin down. I don't think they are necessarily undersized to run that on nickel plays, although when we play teams like the Colts that have 3-WR sets the whole game we have a smaller defense out there and they can run on us all day, as they have done twice.

no, i am not kidding. he is one of the only defensive players we have that is worth keeping. you will not find a cb better than him in the second or later. He also doubles as a PR and consolidates an extra roster spot.

IMO P-buc had progressed since his benching, he's not all I hoped/wanted him to be, but I suspect that the zone coverage is hurting his big-play ability.

I've yet to see the KC-game (my dvd arrives in the mail on friday) but against the Colts he looked sleepy, lumping around, not trying to tackle. The only times he actually tackled someone were if they ran into him (and carried him a few more yards on their backs). With his current display of commitment on the team it's fairly clear that he will NOT be a starter next year, if he's on the team at all.

so im just going to assume that everyone is happier w/fageins out there? he has to be the second worst player on defense we have. He is always getting beat deep...even back to last year when he started to get time. He is beat across the middle, and then fails to tackle right away. He doesnt gamble on the ball, and he can't read the QB.

To be a sucessful CB, you have to be able to do one of these things:
1. Cover the deep ball
2. If you cant cover deep, cover the middle very well
3. Tackle instantly, avoiding YAC
4. Take a chance on the int.
5. Read the QB enough to descipher the differnce between deep and middle, run or pass.
 
The problem we have at CB is Buchanon is very fast and athletic but plays off his man way too far in man coverage and doesn't generally tackle well at all, although he has been doing that better recently. Faggins can stick with a man fairly well and has better mechanics but is much slower and gets beat deep because he can't keep up with fast WR, and every now and then he loses track of the ball. He also doesn't tackle very well. Neither is physical with a WR and both will let a WR dominate them to go get a ball, whereas Dunta will fight WRs off and will win most jump ball battles. Buchanon is better playing zone, while Robinson and Faggins are better playing man coverage. If we could get Buchanon to stay close to his man and play more aggressively and tackle better I would have no problem with keeping him, otherwise we need to try to find another CB that has a mix of the better qualities of Faggins and Buchanon.

Interesting, my perception was that P-buc is best in man coverage, but as with so many other things in life I might be wrong? :)
 
Buchanon has played zones all through college and with the Raiders, and as you should be able to see from games this year when he's in man coverage he backs 10-15 yards off his man all the time rather than staying with him. He definitely has the speed that he can crowd his man more and stick with him if he takes off deep. He doesn't recognize routes real well and seems to have problems with some of his pass covering mechanics, but if he sits back in a zone and can do more ball hawking then he actually makes some plays. All of the batted balls I recall seeing him make this year were out of zone coverage. He is pretty good at sitting back and reading the QB but if he's having to cover a man he can't do that and he's not real good at reading routes in man coverage.

I with you on this. He is advertised as a one on one corner and just plain sucks in zone; as is evident in our zone coverage.
 
Honestly, Buchanon can be our #2 corner. His tackling needs work and that worries me. His coverage skills really don't worry me too much. If we get to the point where we can generate any consistent pass rush, you'll see much better results from our secondary. Faggins can be a decent nickel guy, but that's when he's facing the other team's 3rd-best WR.

I asked Capers last year why, in nickel situations, we didn't move Coleman to nickel back and bring McCree in at FS and he said they felt that Faggins was a better man to have on the field. I still think he's wrong.
