Chronicle reports top 3 picks still unsigned

It will be a shame and disappointment if those three don't make it to training camp. Especially Travis Johnson. He has talked the talk ... now we are anxious to see it!

I was looking forward to seeing Mathis in camp on Saturday. Hopefully he'll be signed by this afternoon.

I really wanted to go see Mathis chase after some Carr Bombs during open practice sessions. I hope they can get everything ironed out, I mean he is a 4th round pick, and Morency is a 3rd rounder. They should be signed. :brickwall

this happens almost every year. The final days are here and the top draft picks start to sign so that everyone under them have a basis to negotiate their salary's.

I would be shocked if these 3 don't have contracts signed before training camp. It might be midnight Friday when they sign, but it will get done.

This year is different since the CBA has not been extended and teams have lost a year of proration for the signing bonus money - meaning there's more annual cap impact on the higher round (> 5 year) rookie contracts signed this year.

By the end of July last year there were 19 1st rounders signed. What are there now, 2 or 3?

This is a league wide deal and not just a Texans thing.

Let me see if I've got this right, you're saying the maximum number of years to amortize or "write off" bonus money (bonus money being just one component or is that all components of guaranteed money ?), has been reduced to 5 years. Is that from 6 to 5 years and if so that's a 16.67 %
annual increase in cap hit over the new and shorter maximun amortization period. It looks like this could mean that a teams annual cap aggregate ceiling would have to be substantially increased just to offset the reduction in the length of amortization period for certain components included for cap calculation ?

Yes.

LOL. brilliantly put, sir.

What scares me is Rosenhaus is the agent for Morency, and Kevin Posten is the agent for Mathis. :brickwall

Based on CC's comments I bet we are not close to signing any of the 3. With the Johnson injury, you can bet they are wary even though they act like their not. I think he's going to be a tough sign. The other two will be too, because of their agents. Strangely, of the 3, Mathis is the one I would like to least loose. He could turn into something very special simply because he has that exceptional speed, but unlike many with speed, he has the hands to go along with it. He's a small time college player, with big time skills. They're raw, but he has them.

Man, very discouraging news. Every day of camp that they miss is a minor setback. And our team does not need ANY setbacks this season, however small.

I still think TJ will sign by next Tuesday. *fingers crossed*

I am not worried about it. Yes I want to see the 3 in camp but at this stage (rookie year) they are just depth...but hopefully work into a starters roll.

and yes hurting camp hurts them from learning the system

Johnson.. he will rotate in.
Morancy..I am not sure if he can supplant hollings or wells just because they are veterans and know the Texans system.
Mathis..be though for him to start over the guys we got..just because of reading defenses and running routes in the NFL.

They NEED to be in camp, but it isn't the end of the world at this point.. Now if it were AJ a couple of years ago I'd be screaming

well they need to be there because each day they aren't there is another day that hurts them and the team...lets not forget the philip rivers holdout...if he doesn't hold out he is the starter of that team and not brees...while johnson and morency are both just depth and rotational guys mathis has a chance to start at some point in the season like earl did last year...but the only way he can do that is by being in camp on time and amazing everyone with his speed and learning how to run better routes...personally i'm tired of hearing about agents and hold outs...i just want to see football again...i watched the high school all-star game two nights ago and it's was amazing

i was flipping through the channels and saw football on tv...i don't think i changed the channel during commercials just in case it was a fluke that i was getting the channel...haha

Let's have a round of applause for the Postons!!!

(crickets)

OK, how about a golf clap? Anyone?

Not yet but if you listen to 610 am via streaming or on the radio they have talked about it for an hour on their news update segments.

T.J. needs to be in camp. he is switching form 4-3 to 3-4 and it is crucial that he get as much time as he can to learn the system. he is also expected to do the most of our draft picks. he better sign friday.

Houston Pro Football is showing the two signings and says Johnson is close behind.

Morency and Mathis both agreed to three-year contracts with the team that will allow them to become restricted free agents after the 2007 season. Morency will receive a signing bonus worth $567,000 according to the station. Per unconfirmed reports, Mathis will receive a $336,000 signing bonus.
