Chron bailing on A&M

I heard it on the radio too.

I'm a Longhorn fan, and I have no love for the Aggies - but this is total BS, especially considering they'll be right back on the wagon whenever College Station gets their sh*t together.

Well, I thought Harris did a really crappy job, so as far as I am concerned, this is good news. I would rather have no news than bad news.

I dunno...I think it is a sad state of affairs when a paper stops covering a college from the area. It is almost as bad as KEYE not showing Texans games.

Maybe A&M will refuse media credentials to the Chronic when they get better.

Aren't they having some pretty serious budget problems at the Chronicle
which involve layoffs and probably other cutbacks ?

Economy is down = advertising is down = TV and newspapers are feeling a crunch. (not sure if that's related to the above posts)

It's not surprising. The Chronicle is a leftist based way liberal rag. I don't even consider it a NEWSpaper. I'd rather use it on my backside quite frankly. It's because A&M is a more conservative school. I'm quite sure there's politicking in the Chronicle underbelly behind it. But then again, the Chronicle has banned me from making any phone calls or writing in anymore.

That's just sad. Looks like all you'll see now is the AP articles which are becoming more & more prominent in that birdcage liner.

Ted - It's be great if they don't credential them when they re-apply. Serves them right.

I think A&M should seriously consider limiting credentials to the Chronicle now. You don't kick a man when hes down and A&M will get things back in order and Chronicle will come back begging. Just shameful move considering how inexpensive it is to have a reporter working College Station. If I was A&M Alumni and/or fan, I would be sending a scathing letter to the sports director at Chronicle.

And for all the people who think "A&M should not hand out/limit credentials".

C'mon, y'all don't really think they'll do that..........this is the city of Houston, arguably the city that pumps out more blue chippers than any city in America. Hell a Houston kid single handedly knocked off "Pete Carroll's most talented team ever"......and I'm not talking about Vince Young. (Jacquizz Rodgers)

Do y'all really think A&M is going to deny the city's only newspaper access to their facility when the Chron goes back to them?.....John McClain can go punch their AD straight in the face tomorrow and they'll still give the Chron as much access as they want.

The fact of the matter is A&M just flat sucks now.......it's fallen so far it's sad and A&M isn't in position to deny any free press, especially when nobody is currently beating down their doors to offer any.

Honestly the biggest blame in all this get's laid directly at the feet of A&M themselves.....they're freaking A&M (once considered one of the greatest jobs in the country....right up there with UT), yet they've let almost every single football program in the state pass them by.

If we were doing a Texas college football power ranking, how would you rank the programs in this state?

That is a very low-class move by the chronic. A&M is in the rebuilding process at the moment so of course they're gonna suck for a couple of years if not more, but you just don't drop them on their ass.

The Chron was already pathetic before this.

Wow, must not have had a plausible argument so, of course, that results in personal attacks. Way to be mature. :thumbup

Apparently, you don't know ANYONE who has ever worked at the Chronicle. I've known several people who have and they would all agree with me. So, try to formulate a debate before attacking me personally. I'm sure it'll be a stretch.. but I'm sure you can try.

To put those in more plain english--you can discuss any topic so long as you do not:

1) Personally attack other posters--talk about your own opinion and why you are right rather than trying to describe another person;

Fact--for whatever reason, people on MB's feel that they can say things they would never say in person.

Simple MB rule #1--especially on emotional subjects, before you post think "would I really say this to someone in person?"

Fact--either non-sports topics will be discussed appropriately, or they won't be discussed at all.

Simple MB rule #3--this is a football MB. We would like to allow any discussion topic, but if MB members cannot keep the discussion of non-sports topics civil then that part of the MB will be shut down or severely restricted.

Personal responsibility folks--freedom isn't the opportunity to do whatever the heck you want, it is the opportunity to be responsible for yourself.

I personally think that maybe you should have read the post from infantrycak that I quoted above before you decided to call another poster "idiotic". I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but, isn't that a "personal attack" ??

I don't see what was so off base as to what 3rd N Inches said Carr Bombed. The chronicle has always been a liberal based newspaper. Austin is a liberal city and A&M is more of a conservative school as well.

However, I don't think that it's a big sign of disrespect on the chronicle's part. They are having budget problems and they felt that they couldn't keep the same coverage of the Aggies, because of budgeting issues. They were talking about it on the radio. And if they are going to cut anyone out, it certainly isn't going to be Texas. A&M was just the easier choice.

What I'm wondering is are they going to stop covering Texas Tech now and Baylor as well?

Wow, somebody needs thicher skin........what a complete joke.

Hey thanks for the negative rep 3rd and inches......as you can see it really hurt.

Anyways, I never attacked him, I said his post was either "idiotic or sarcastic", because people joke so much around here I couldn't tell the damn difference...(and to be honest the post was so out there I thought he was joking).....but hey, now I know he wasn't being sarcastic......

If you really think the Chron is holding a grudge against A&M, because they are a "conservative school", please wake up, that has nothing to do with it. I think some people are starting to let this election get to their heads.

and to be frank with you (ah hell, here's comes another negative rep) If you're so paranoid that you think a sports section of a newspaper is going to quit covering a football team, because of supposed hidden political agendas I can see why the hell the Chron stopped taking your emails or your calls.....I mean did you call them up if the top of the obituaries was field with liberals also?

Seriously, did it ever just cross your mind that this country is going through it's biggest economic crisis in about 80 years.......during a time where the newspaper business is dying off. So maybe the Chron (like every other company in this country.....even the conservative ones) just doesn't have it in their budget to cover one of the worst football programs in their state this year.....nah, that would make too much sense....it has to be because they aren't a bunch of tree huggers from Austin.

This city has always been one of the biggest frontrunners in the entire country and to be frank again.......nobody wants to read about a loser, and losing doesn't sell that well here. Programs like Houston, TT, and even Baylor to a degree have got their programs headed in the right direction....if A&M had their house in order this thread wouldn't even be here.

Calm down Carr Bombed. Both of you guys are great posters. The main reason why they cut off A&M is because of money and their budget has gotten smaller. Businesses have to make decisions especially in times like this. I think that you made some valid points about A&M being pretty bad right now, but they do have a new staff of coaches that has to gel with their players for a while and also get their recruits in as well (That is if Sherman can avoid the Hot Seat long enough. He is pretty much already there). I don't remember all of the team that the chronicle does cover, but I do remember them covering Baylor quite a bit. Why didn't they cut off Baylor instead. They've been terrible for years.

3rd N Inches was right though about the difference in the majority of people that go to UT and A&M. Austin is like a baby San Francisco while College Station is as conservative as it gets.

I'm pretty torn on it really. I'm a die hard Horns fan.. my son wants to go to UT. My daughter wants to go to A&M. Either way, TX will be getting a good share of my money.

And to answer, no the Chronicle stopped taking my calls and emails because I called them out on supporting some very shady Latino Organizations which are a detriment to our Hispanic culture. They didn't like that. Hence, I've been blacklisted. They didn't want to hear about the trials and tribulations of legal immigrants who came here and are working hard. But that's a different story.

My point was that the Chronicle if given the choice would cut out A&M before UT. It's not just based on the performance of the school, it does have to do with the political leanings of the school. Which, is the Chronicle's right to do. It's a business after all. I do think that it will hurt business to a degree, because there's a lot of Aggies in the smaller cities around Houston.

Good post.

I am not surprised by the move nor am I particularly annoyed by it. I don't read the Chronicle and I could care less what they do or don't report on. I certainly don't rely on them for Texans news, that's for sure.

It's been a rough season being an Aggie and a hardcore Texans fan. I don't enjoy the "someday" talk that surrounds both of the teams. I will do what I always do, though.... stay true to the teams I love and just keep moving. You can't let it get to you, no matter how much it stings.

In hard times like these, I like to remind people that a major Houston sports team is fighting for it's 3rd straight championship.

NIce TexansLucky. I'm not really a soccer fan, but the star of their team is a really nice guy. I used to live in the same building as him and he was always very friendly. You're right we do have at least one winning team. :kingkong:

I think that we'll beat the Lions this weekend though.

1. Texas
2. Texas Tech
3. TCU
4. Baylor
5. Rice
6. Houston
7. Texas A&M
8. SMU (they are really horrible)

Although I can't argue if someone throws a slew of Division 2 teams in ahead of # 7.

he called the augment/post idiotic so he attacked your POV. Its more of a reflection of him than you when he does this so just try to feel confident that smart people post here and can make up their own minds about whether your comments were indeed idiotic or not. Our moderation is more centered in calling each other names directly as we encourage you guys to center your arguments on the other people's arguments instead of the people themselves. If we took down every post that inferred that someone's post is idiotic we would be over-censoring this place since this kind of stuff is pretty frequent in sports forums. All he needs is more peer pressure and someone asking him to not post such an idiotic response. :spit::pirate: (please turn on your sarcasm meters for that one)

They're good guys. I met a couple of them at a FEMA POD I was volunteering at a while ago. I think they were just happy someone recognized them lol

Well the Aggs fought hard in the first half........didn't really watch the second half, because I did some yard work, but it looks like it got ugly.

Errrr.... OK. I see you have completely changed your position on this since last month when you gave me negative rep and threatened to ban me for pointing out a post that was hate speech. I didn't attack the poster, I inferred that the post contained hatred. You said the hate speech poster was someone who should be emulated, in that he attacked a class of people and not one person. However, THIS post, pointing out your inconsistency could be construed as a fairly direct attack on you, so go ahead and give me some more negative rep and ban me.

What does them covering UT have to do with them covering A&M?

I'm sorry. This is going to come off as mean, or arrogant, or whatever.
First off, the chronicle not covering A&M has nothing to do with the chronicle covering Texas. Only aggies seem to think that A&M is entitled to the same coverage. That is simply not the case. Texas is the number one university in state, the biggest state school in the region, the most prestigious public university in state, and by far the best university in state in terms of sports. A&M should be happy they are still allowed to wear the big 12 patch on their jerseys - they prove week in and week out that they are struggling to deserve their spot in the conference.

Secondly, my user name has nothing to do with anything. Trying to imply an ignorant sentiment such that steroids make you dumb shows your absolute lack of knowledge on the subject.
You're right, it came off as ignorant AND arrogant.

They are the two largest and oldest University systems in the State of Texas.
They are BOTH part of the Big 12.
They are both STATE schools, not private institutions.
Distance wise, College Station is actually CLOSER to Houston.
The number of supporters / followers (that means "readership" to people like the Chronicle circulation Dept.) is nearly equal.

To imply (as in your original post) that one has nothing to do with the other is either naive or ignorant of the facts.

Was that explained slowly and carefully enough to sink in that time, or do I need to spell it out even MORE clearly? If it was all about wins vs. losses we wouldn't even have coverage of the Astros OR the Texans anymore.

Keep grasping at the supposed rivalry. Hold on with all you have!

It's not the same. A&M is a putrid program, going the wrong direction, with a delusional fanbase.

UT is looking like its poised to contend for its second national championship in 4 years.

Keep getting blown out by Tech, lol... ark st? HAHAHA

pooooor aaaagggyyyyy
Wow, you really ARE reading-challenged aren't you. Here I was feeeling like maybe I'd taken an inappropriate shot at your screen name and you spew this idiotic nonsense (again). You can't do better than poor aggy in reply to an intelligent, REASONED response? "Supposed rivalry"?? You do realize that this is a football forum right? (Note to mods: This is my last attempt at feeding the troll - after this the ignore button is called for.)

I don't give a red cent about EITHER team's record. I'd feel the same way if records were reversed. You either worry about your readership or you don't. If the Chron wants to keep sounding their own death knell, it's up to them.

(Disclaimer - There are as many UT grads in my family as there are from A&M.)

And FYI -

LOL @ the aggies hitting me with neg rep. I don't care about your rep any more than I care about that stupid "living memorial" BS.

That team is horrible. The program is spiraling downwards. A&M isn'tin the same league as UT. The fans are delusional.

I fail to see how we are delusional. It's easy to see that the team is struggling... it doesn't take a pundit such as yourself to get that message across. Most of us knew this would be a rough season from the start.

P.S. - I don't particularly care to see my school degraded by a new poster on my favorite board. Calm yourself.

I agree. I'm as hard as a Longhorn fan as you can find and I bleed Orange, but I don't think that Texas A&M should be degraded that way either. I don't hate the Aggies, and I would like to see them get back to being a much better team so the rivalry between Texas and the Aggs could be a much better one every year. Texas A&M is still a Texas school and it shouldn't be trashed in that type of form. As bad as the Aggies are this year, as a DIE HARD Longhorn fan I will not be taking them lightly be it as they beat us the last two seasons.

Yeah, ain't like you're gonna go lower than zero :) I look forward to revisiting this thread when your 'Horns come crashing down, but some of you are too young to remember Fred Akers :)

Fact: A&M sucks this year
Fact: I am worried more, as a UT fan, about playing A&M than I was/am with Missouri, Baylor and Kansas.
Fact: I do not get the line of thinking that has the Chron bailing on A&M. This is bad business on many levels, or a just a lack of competence.
Fact: I lived through the Fred Akers years, but came out alright.

Source: Mi cabeza.

I've made my point - no need to rub it in. I only got ugly because of the personal attack due to my username in the original reply.

And texecutioner, like always, I will continue to ignore your posts until you stop bolding them.

Apparently you aren't, because you decided to respond to my post when it wasn't even to you. It was to Texans Lucky. And don't think that it matters when all I've noticed from you were some petty attacks on myself, Texans Lucky, and Disaacks. That is all you seem to know how to do, so ignore this one as well and in the future I'd rather you not reference me at all.

1 more kind of inconvenient truth: A&M has beaten Texas two years running. Yes I understand that Texas had a national championship the year before, and I understand that A&M is as a whole nowhere near their glory days. But even when they stink, they can beat Texas. I say this as a Longhorn, by the way.

A&M will be back. I don't know that they will ever be an elite team or consistently be a top 10 caliber team, but there is nothing preventing them from being a top 25 team, or even a Big 12 title contender in a good year. They will find the right coach because they will keep looking for one until he comes. Look at Alabama or Penn State this year.

What really ought to hurt 3rd I read about three months ago that UT & A & M are letting go of their oil leases. The estimate is that they'll bring in three billion. That's billion with a "B". Things may have changed with the economic crunch. But I doubt it.

Agreed on the aliens also. Everyone wants to forget the guys stuck on the list to come in for decades trying to do it the right way. I guess those guys don't vote democratic though. Been a big difference so far between the Katrina victims and the Ike victims. I guess our refugees don't rate the PC tag . Maybe they should of rioted after the storm ?
