should i be poumped up about this undrafted CB out of Arizona?
TexanFan881 said:I definately think this guy will be on the roster this year, but where did you here about him working with the first and second team defense? I don't remember hearing that, but I could be wrong.
This doesn't mean that Mckenzie is first or second string on the depth chart, it just means that Capers wanted to see how he would do against legitimate NFL players. McKenzie will most likely be on the practice squad just because the Texans already have quite a bit of talent at corner right now and McKenzie is eligible for the practice squad while the others aren't. Robinson, Buchanon, Faggins, Sanders, and Simmons (he's listed as a safety, but he's essentially a corner) have spots pretty much wrapped up.texanfan2002114 said:This is one guy to watch out for. McKenzie's only realistic chance at a roster spot is to prove to be a better special teams player than Jason Bell.

Your implication was that it was a big deal to work out with 1st and 2nd strings. The next post after yours was:

After reading those two posts, I just thought I would tell everyone in general (and not just you in particular) that McKenzie would probably not be on the final roster.
Texans | McKenzie Fighting for a Roster Spot - from www.KFFL.com

Nick Schenck, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans undrafted rookie CB Chris McKenzie has shown the ability to bounce back from his miscues and not repeat them, making him one of the team's most promising rookies thus far in the evaluation process. "He's done well out here," head coach Dom Capers said. "He certainly has the physical tools. We'll just have to see, but you can never have enough good cover guys." McKenzie will likely have to excel on special teams in order to make the 53-man roster.

i dont think thats how it works, but i might be wrongjppaul said:If we put him on the practicew squad that means we have to cut him. Which means somebody else will certainly pick him up off the waiver wire.

with his 45 inch vertical, I think I'd be willing to put him against any receiver under 6'1...........I'd be more worried about the strong receiver matchup against him...........and not the tall and fast receiver.
Porky said:I think he has a better than 50/50 chance to make the final roster, and he has very good upside from what I know about him....much better than either Bell or Simmons. Simmons is a no brainer to make the club because of his versatility. He can line up at any spot in the secondary. I think he could beat out Bell if he can prove that he can be a good ST because of his upside vs. Jason Bell. From what I understand, he was pursued by all 32 teams, so I don't see any way he makes it to the practice squad. Some team will sign him to their active roster, which is all that is required.
D-ReK said:I agree with you...If he proves to be a decent player on ST, he'll likely make the team instead of Bell due to his upside, since Bell doesn't really provide much value as a CB...I don't expect McKenzie to make much of an impact as a CB this year, but he should end up 4th on the depth chart going into 2006...McKenzie's biggest weakness (no pun intended) is his strength...If I remember correctly, he only did 6 reps at the combine, so there is little question that he needs to get stronger...If he does this, the sky is the limit for him...
Once on a practice squad, the player is free to sign with any team for a 53 man roster spot. If signed to a 53 man roster, the player must get at least 3 weeks of salary before being released. If the player is released after the 3 week period, he's free to sign anywhere...for a NFL roster spot or on any practice squad.dirty steve said:Any team that takes a player from our practice squad has to keep them on their active roster, kind of like the Rule 5 Winter Draft in baseball (how the Astros initially acquired Willy Taveras). The player is not a FA if he goes on the practice squad.
