chop blocks banned

About time. If (in the name of player safety) DB's can't hit WR's over the middle of the field then there is no reason that 315 lb OL should be allowed to chop opposing DL.

I was wondering about that too, I wonder if teams go back to finding the biggest lineman for more of a power scheme
Like the Dallas Cowboys have right now? I like their signing of Alfred Morris behind that big and stout offensive line. Even though his stats have been going south ever since his monster rookie season.

Gary Kubiak is probably scratching his head and trying to figure out how he can keep that strong running game going. As if losing his two quarterbacks from last season wasn't hard enough. That zone blocking scheme, involving the former legalized chop blocks (by definition) was a big part of his running game.

As long as Lamar Miller is in open space!
He's a threat to take it to the house on a big play.

As I remember, they were legal between the tackles.
Yep. No team did it better than we did when Gary Kubiak was here coaching. Wade Smith and Chris Myers were pro bowlers at left guard and center for us. Think about that for a second!

We had an undrafted running back who was arguably the best back in the game for a period of time in Arian Foster. He benefited from our zone blocking schemes, but he was so skilled and talented, with amazing vision and that great cut back slide he had, I think he'd have ran for big yards without the chop blocking and pull out blocks.

But smaller and athletic offensive lineman who could utilize a proper chop block - which was very much legal between the tackles - was our ideal offensive lineman back then.

Now, with a speedster like Lamar Miller who's dangerous in open space, I would try to go for bigger offensive lineman who can maul you at the line of scrimmage. So Miller can use his quickness to bounce outside when needed.

this will hurt a lot of zone running teams

According to Greg Koch and N.D. Kalu, all NFL teams utilizing zone blocking to some extent. Some more than others, but they all use some form of it for different formations.

This rule change will be a huge plus for J.J. Watt. :thumbup

My bad, JB. I apologize for wording it wrong.

I always considered them the same thing (going low to win) as former Cowboys OT Erik Williams once said when he frustrated Reggie White during a playoff game.

The chop block is when an offensive lineman is blocking at the thighs or lower on a defensive player, while another offensive lineman is engaged with him above the waist.

The cut block is going low to block, lower to be exact, (knees and legs) in man-to-man situations, with no other offensive player already engaged.

Sadly, I think Brian Cushing could explain to me the rules in detail. What a beast he was before those two injuries against the Jets and Chiefs. Err, Matt Slauson and Jamaal Charles. Although Charles' block was legal. Slauson's block was just dirty and unnecessary (not even involved in the play and came from behind).

I used to be a pretty crappy Right Tackle in my day. A poor man's Todd Wade. LOL. I'm still pretty big and strong but my athleticism is long gone. I would just try to maul people if I still played.

I have doubts about zone blocking being dependent upon the execution of the cut-blocking technique ? Not being an expert on offensive line play myself, maybe somebody who is or thinks he is could offer some analysis ?

Dom Capers instituted ZBS without cut blocks. It sucked. Kubiak then came in and brought Gibbs and we had the league leading rusher. The whole point is to have that cutback option. Look at Foster highlights and see how often he is against the grain.

I always wonder what kind of success DD could have had on a good team. He never gets any credit for being basically half the offense during that era.
