Okay, I decided to not delve into the draft this year because of #draftobsession that has settled in the last few years.

So I know literally nothing except we have 10 picks.

Give me a few high level things to watch for this draft. i could google the lamestream media outlets but your know, inisder knowledge.

Team Needs.

Positions with good depth, bad depth in draft.

Key Players to look for falling to us.

Anything else I need to know so I can not be totally confused tomorrow.

Thanks Draftniks

I think JBs got the right idea. Too much to cover in just a post or two. I will say Texans had a very good FA haul this off season and if not aware you could review that also which would give insight during draft. Safeties Rahim Moore and Stevie Brown (signed today) addresses a big need in DBs. We signed RB Chris Polk also who should eliminate Griffin and push Blue.

Good depth positions: O-line, WR especially slot WR, OLB/Edge rusher, RB.

Average depth positions: CB, Safety, D-line.

Poor depth positions: QB, TE, ILB

We did a decent job in FA so there are no absolute glaring holes on the team. Most folks believe our biggest needs are at OLB/Edge rusher, WR, ILB, Safety, CB, O-line depth, D-line depth, and of course QB. You can look on the mock draft forum for who most folks want us to draft. The 1st round is really the key since most everyone has no idea what direction the team will go. Most believe that OLB and WR will be addressed in the 1st 2 round, unknown what order though, but don't be surprised if the 1st pick is a CB, DT, or C due to value at the positions. There's also the definite possibility of a trade down, depending on who's available to us at #16.

I would as SOLB to the list of weak depth, arguably the weakest link on the team now with the signing of Stevie Brown other than maybe the Center position. With the departure of Brooks Reed the only players at that position are John Simon and Jason Ankrah - valuable depth to be sure, but I don't want to trust them to man the position all year. Targeting an OLB like Dupree or Randy Gregory also allows the team to brace for a future in which Mercilus leaves the team in free agency and Clowney's knee prevents him from playing at a high level.

A lot of hate for a guy who killed it last year as SEC DPOY and has an awesome get-off.

saying SEC DPOY doesn't really mean much... the previous winner never even made it on a nfl roster

Ray's foot, his stupidity take him out of 1st round consideration for me

So the award has lost all meaning because of one player winning it?

I can understand the foot+weed making him drop, but I think someone is going to get fantastic value at the bottom of the first.

That's fair. We all see things a bit differently, it will be a while before one of us is "proven" right or wrong. I just want no part of him and want to spread the word of Shane Ray hate to everyone willing to lend me their ears.

Michael Sam not making it on a roster is actually a huge historical disparity; probably has more to do with the combination of him being openly gay and the Tebow-esque media attention that might bring to the team. That shouldn't reflect poorly on Ray.

As for Ray himself, my issue with him is just that I don't see him as a fit at all for the defense. We need an SOLB, not another Jack/Elephant linebacker.

I was just making the point that winning an award doesn't guarantee success

Agree to the bolded

Oh of course, I was specifically pointing out that Michael Sam not being even on an NFL practice squad is a humongous historical disparity.

No ones had as bad a run as Sam has had so far, but it's not like these guys have all been world beaters. Definitely a couple great and couple pretty good, but humongous historical disparity might be a bit of a stretch.

That list actually makes a pretty damn good case that the SEC DPOY guarantees nothing about your transition to the pros, just like guys who win the Heisman.

College awards for college production. They predict nothing.

Nobody is saying that winning an award guarantees anything. It would be silly for anyone to think that.

I am just trying to point out that there is a lot of undeserved hate for Ray right now. I am not sure how me saying he is the SECDPOY means he will be great. Its just a single bullet point in the profile of Shane Ray.

So lets move past that argument, because we are all on the same page.

Guarantees transition? Not a huge disparity?

The original statement was about not making a roster. Huge disparity was an understatement. That's 8 1sts, 1 2nd (33rd pick DeMeco) and 1 5th. He's a gigantic anomaly.

I don't remember saying anything about whether there was any disparity or not. Nor did I mention anything about where anyone has or should be selected.

The original statement was actually about Ray, not Sam. Sam was brought up only after the SEC DPOY award was brought up. The SEC DPOY was seemingly brought up in defense of Ray against hate that was seen as undeserved.

The only point I was making is that the award has no bearing on future success.

Maybe 4 of those 11 previous winners justified their draft status in the NFL. So Ray winning the award does not mean that he should automatically be considered an elite prospect, thus perhaps the hate against him is not undeserved. Just because a guy won an award in college doesn't mean that I have to like the way his skill set transitions to the next level.

I didn't multi-quote. There was a comment above yours about not being a huge disparity. Going in the 7th and never making a roster were huge disparities.
