Case Keenum to start for Rams; Nick Foles benched

Three months after giving Nick Foles a two-year contract extension, the St. Louis Rams have decided to bench him.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher announced that Case Keenum will start at quarterback for the Rams at Baltimore this week. Foles has been removed as a starter after two straight losses by the 4-5 Rams.

"You know, Nick just needs a break," Fisher said. "Nick just needs a break right now."

Foles was acquired in a March trade between teams dealing starting quarterbacks when the Rams sent Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles, a 2016 second-round pick and a move up in the middle rounds of last year's draft. The pick is nice, but this benching is tantamount to admitting defeat in the deal.

The timing of this move still is stunning. Keenum, who went undrafted out of college, has started 10 games in four seasons. All of those starts were with the Texans, although Keenum did spend time with the Rams and Texans last season. He's been Foles' backup throughout this season.

Fisher said his offense needs a spark, which is clear to see. Foles has seven touchdowns, six interceptions and five fumbles. The Rams have very few sustainable features on offense. Their only success comes from Tavon Austin gadget plays and big runs by rookie Todd Gurley. Foles has a big arm and has connected on the occasional deep ball this season, but he has played particularly poorly over the last month.

Foles was 0-12 on passes thrown over 10 yards Sunday, which was the most attempts on such passes without a completion in the last 10 seasons, according to the Rams' website. Fisher wasn't making any promises about how long Keenum would start, but he clearly has the chance to keep the job. St. Louis has a playoff-ready defense, but plenty of challenging games remaining against Cincinnati, Arizona, and Seattle.

Foles might very well get another chance to start at quarterback for the Rams, but Fisher probably hopes it's not necessary. The Rams are letting their Case Keenum flag fly.

Keenum only $4,800 on FanDuel. Cheaper than Shaun Hill (Huh?). Against Baltimore's 25th ranked passing defense, could make for a sneaky play in daily this week.

Hell, I picked him up in my 12 team league to start this week with Eli on a bye. Might switch him for Sanchez if Bradford is out, but for now it looks like I'm playing him.

I remember when half this board wanted us to trade for Foles.

Dodged a bullet there.

I wouldn't say half this board. I was probably the biggest advocate on the Foles wagon. Cak was pretty strong on him as well from what I remember. I was the main one and I give certain guys a lot of crap for their asinine QB prospects here, and I'll fully admit that I was wrong on that one. Foles looked so damn good in Philly though. I don't know how that guy turned into such a poor QB.

I was completely on Foles as well. Who knows what a QB guru would have done with him.

That year he threw 27 TD's and 2 INT's was a beautiful season watching him. I loved his pocket presence for a guy who wasn't really mobile. I knew that Chip had soured on him, but I couldn't understand why. Foles did a great job exposing why this year, and I'd say that he's nothing but a back up at this point. He looked flat out awful every time I watched him this year.

I didn't particularly like Foles, I figured most of his success came from having a shtpile of talent around him. Chip took all that away & he looked pedestrian.

Still, I agree with 'cak, would have been nice to see what Kubiak, McCarthy, even a guy like Martz or Chan Gailey would have done with him. Someone who knows how to design plays with the people he's got.

The Rams don’t have anyone ahead of Case Keenum on the depth chart at quarterback, which makes holding onto him something of a priority with the start of the league year less than an hour away.

Keenum is a restricted free agent and the Rams have, per multiple reports, tendered him at the first-round level in order to increase their chances of holding onto him. The tender comes with a salary of $3,352,000 and guarantees the Rams both the right to match any other offers and a first-round pick as compensation should Keenum move on.

Good payday for Case.

A little over reaction huh? I mean I like Case & think his best football is ahead of him, but... do you really think anyone is going to "go after" him? First round tender?

Wow.

The tender just insures that nobody goes after him. They could have paid him less with a lower tender. But now any team offering Keenum a contract would have to give up their first round pick to the Rams to sign him.

Nobody in their right mind would do that. Plus, the Rams only have to pay him the $3M this year. That's not a bad salary for a guy that's likely to start some games even if they draft somebody.

The salary that comes with the tender is worth it in this instance.

Man Case has come a long way since U of H campus ...... hes a big time QB playing in LA ... ;P

I would not bet on it. I can see the Rams coming full circle and taking a shot on RGIII and starting him. He would certainly bring more star power in LA than Keenum.

I know I sound like a homer (and I am), but I'm really rooting for Case. Working his way up to the starter in Los Angeles the hard way would be quite a story for one of the good guys, and I think he can do it. Case has one thing in particular that few recognize, touch. He throws arguably the most 'catchable' ball in the league. What does that mean ... compare Brady and Mallett throwing the same pass. One goes for a 12 yard catch and run, the other is a 4 yard drop. Keenum sends passes that arrive ready made. This is where Brees has earned his money, and if given a REAL chance has a very good chance of turning Case into a star. I know people only see the 2013 season and want to crush everyone with it, but Case is 7-2 since then.

I think a lot of people are rooting for Case. He seems like a great dude who does things the right way. He played college ball here and he got his first shot here with the Texans. It didn't work out but I wish him success in his career except on days he is playing against us.

Wow.
Supposedly Kubiak wanted him n Denver. That tender stopped them. And $3 mil is chump change for QBs. The Rams will likely move aggressively in the draft to pickup a long term answer.

Yeah, the money thing isn't an issue. I think Case has easily earned it. It's the first round tender that gets me.

I can't imagine another team coveting him, Denver's current situation not-withstanding.

If there was real interest then I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. But again, the money is about right. The tender, no harm no foul.
