Carr on 790 ESPN

Waterboy
He had interview with Charlie Pallilo, and stated that he and the recievers started throwing passes today. He mentioned Johnson, Armstrong, and Bradford being at the sessions. In addition, he told Charlie that 65 percent completion percentage is an attainable goal for his fourth season. He mentioned that they are tweaking the offense (Greg Roman and CP) to increase his passing percentage and the lower the pressure on the offensive line. Said that he would not mind if Texans invested picks to gain more weapons or better protection, but side step the issue by stating that he doesn't have the expertise to make personnel decision. Said same thing about Jamie Sharper situation. Also spoke about developing mindset where Texans should enter every game expecting to win every week. Mentioned Philly and NE. When questioned about TD/INT ratio, mentioned that team needed to get into the endzone. Need higher redzone effienvy and stuff.

ESPN 790 replays interview @ 6 pm today.

I thought the team should have that mindset already

I think he probably meant somewhere along the lines of starting out with that mindset right now since they know they can win more than 5 games and can win back to back games now.

Trying your best to win and EXPECTING to win are different.

And not doing both can be dangerous.

A team that tries hard but doesn't really expect to win might not have the confidence that allows you to relax in pressure situations and just play the game. At the end of the game, when players need to be loose enough to go out and win, a team that doesn't expect to win can be playing their hearts out but are too tense to perform well.

On the other hand, a team that expects to win but doesn't have a little fear of losing will not give the maximum effort. Players from dynasty teams like the Packers of the 1960's and the Steelers of the 1970's talk about how they went into every game expecting to win, but also about how the fear of failure drove them to victory.

Great individual athletes and great teams have two complimentary fires burning inside them. One is the desire to be the best. The other is the fear of falling short of that goal.

Let me ask a silly question... Why do we have to wait until the offseason to put in a wrinkle? If this is going to benefit us, why did we wait to do it?

I'm sure they broke down film and came to the conclusion that timing routes would help. They mostly run the multi-read run-n-shoot style routes that let the defense dictate to the offense. I'm sure timing patterns need practice that you don't get in your week to week preperations so it is much easier to change your scheme in the off-season. The offense is improving each year. Last year the Texans offense improved from 31st in the league in total offense to 19th, we picked up 63 more first downs than the last season and the running game had 118 yards per game. In the AFC only Peyton Manning, Trent Green, Jake Plummer and Tom Brady threw for more yards than David Carr. The Texans also had 1000 yard WR and a 1000 yard RB. Not bad for an offense in its 3rd season ever. Most fans don't see how far we have come....just were we aren't.

Did anyone catch Charley Casserly yesterday on 790? If so, what did he say? I know he won't reveal anything but did anyone notice anything? Thanks.

In 1991, Aikman's third NFL season, the Cowboys went from Dave Shula's read-oriented passing attack to Norv Turner's timing-based attack. Aikman went from a possible bust to a likely hall of famer, and he would credit that change for much of his success.

Aikman was taking a lot of criticism by guys like Skip Bayless for being slow-witted and unable to read defenses and follow his progressions. True or not, he certainly flourished after the change. I think Carr is in a similar position and is a similar quarterback to Troy Aikman...

I guess all I'm saying is that we can expect 3 superbowls in the next five years!!! :woot
