Carr Compensation?

if we were to not pickup carr's option (i hope we do pick it up), would we get any compensatory picks in the draft? if so, what rounds? would that make carr an unrestricted FA?

If we don't sign Carr I don't think we get any compensation.

Seem to be pretty eager to jump from the fying pan into the fire IMO. Willing to bet everything on one turn of the cards doesn't stike me as good business. Build an O-line, option Carr and draft Bush is probably the safest thing to do. 99.99 percent of the people who actually know what they are talking about, REAL NFL coaches and scouts, agree that Carr has the goods. World better than Vince could ever be???? Probably not, but there are HUG questions about the type of QB Vince is making it in the NFL and you loss Carr, you have zip for 1-2 years, cause he ISN"T going to be able to start year one. Then you will say, just get a journyman QB for a couple of years...well you will have season JUST like we have had.

I wonder why in 04 he had over 3,500 yards and a better QB rating and completion percentage than Tom Brady and now in 05 the entire team has a huge setback that EVERYONE with 1/2 a clue knows was mostly due to coaching and now it is all Carrs fault so throw the bum out. That ONLY makes sense if you are wearing burnt orange.

The best thing IMO would be to trade down and build up the core of team, but that isn't very sexy, so damn little support for that.

If your audience for this retort is for the board then I digress. If it is for me you are incredibly off base as I have been wanting to trade down the whole time, including this moment. However, you may be confusing my dislike for Carr's contract based upon his output. I would like to cut him and sign him back at a discounted rate. The only thing that I have said that is in itself a caveat, is that why extend Carr for three years at an average of 8 mil per year, when we could spend less money in the next three on VY.

I do not wear burnt orange glasses as I have no investment in UT, whereas I have invested in the Texans since day one.
 
What I don't here anyone saying is that we do have another option with Carr. We can slap the franchise tag on him and lock him up for another year. This would allow us to draft Young and keep Carr. I would not be suprised if that is what we end up doing.
 
you would get a compensatory pick....................but it is based upon his new deal and how he performs
 
You could get a compensatory pick (no higher than a 3rd round pick) depending on whether we lose more people to free agency or bring in more people. If we end up bringing in as many or more people from free agency than we lose, then we will not get any compensatory picks.

Because slapping him with the franchise tag would cost us more then $5/8M option. I believe the franchise tag to be $8+M, average salary of top 3 players or an x amount % increase if already top 3 salary.

My bad KT if I missed your intent. I am EXTREMILY concerned about the cap implications if we don't trade down. If we wind up with 2 QBs with big contracts or 2 RBs with big contracts it will hamstring our ability to build the lines and defense. We are going to need to spend some fairly large dollars to get Bently and a good CB in FA not to mention what it might cost to pry Hutchison loose if want to. I think we MAY be trying to restructure Carrs contract. CC mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the option would be given within two weeks. Might just be watching how all of the draft lines up and what they could do. Personally I don't think either Bush OR Young will be all that and a bag of chips, but if the team goes that way, I'm there. I see the possibilities, just don't like the risk factor and costs.

That's what it boils down to because the rest of us do something else to make a living. And it's not a rare event when the pros are wrong of course, but there seems to be a very strong majority of them that think Carr is the real deal, he just needs a supporting cast.

I assume you are meaning the ones trying out for HC and that's true they PROBABLY aren't going to get to radical with suggestions, but that isn't who/what I was refering to. It's a boatload of others, including coaches that we compete against that say it. If a fairly large group of those kind of folks were saying Carr was chopped liver (like they do about Harrington) then I would be MUCH more comfortable moving on, but I really think he is the deal and to toss him over for the latest flavor wouldn't be a smart thing. In fact, I would be MOST comfortable if we traded out of the 1st to build the core/foundation of the team that we have ignored and have paid a heavy price for doing it. If we would have paid attention to the core like we should have, I think (assumption here of competent coaching) we could have been competing for a playoff spot by this year.
