Cardinals New Spread Offense.......

OptimisticTexan

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
Arizona Cardinals new spread offense may have the benefits of the new athletes that the Oilers and Falcons of the late 80's / early 90's could only dream of.....primarily the ability to deploy a TE. A look at the weapons they could be lining up this season:

QB
Kyler Murray

WR
Larry Fitzgerald / 6-3 @ 218 lbs / 4.4-40
Kevin White / 6-3 @ 216 lbs / 4.3 to 4.4-40
Chad Williams / 6-1 @ 204 lbs / 4.3 to 4.4-40
Hakeem Butler / 6-6 @ 225 lbs / 4.4-40
Christian Kirk / 5-11 @ 200 lbs / 4.4-40
Andy Isabella / 5-9 @ 190 lbs / 4.2 to 4.3-40
Damiere Byrd / 5.9 @ 180 lbs / 4.2 to 4.3-40

TE
Ricky Seals-Jones / 6-5 @ 243 lbs / 4.6-40
Charles Clay / 6-3 @ 255 lbs / 4.7-40
Caleb Wilson / 6-5 @ 240 lbs / 4.5-40

RB
David Johnson / 6-1 @ 224 lbs / 4.5-40
Chase Edmonds / 5-9 @ 205 lbs / 4.5-40
TJ Logan / 5-9 @ 195 lbs / 4.3 to 4.4-40

That's size, speed and athleticism to make this new version of the spread offense pretty interesting for the 2019 season.

Think you're overselling Fitz and Kevin White a bit?

In this new spread, I could see Fitz moving inside for favorable mismatches. Guy can still ball and might get another solid season out of those legs when an opposing cover corner isn't draped over him or having to compete with double teams. They got new speed to take that roll. Again, wouldn't surprise me.

I don't think he'd run a 4.4 today if you put a gun to his head. He's just not that guy anymore.

And Kevin White.. bruh..

Fitz is a veteran and I never stated that I saw him as an outside burner in this new offense. If the Cardinals employ 4 and 5 receiver sets with a TE.....I could see the young speed on the outside with Fitz getting the inside slot where he could have some mismatches since the speed on the outside could keep the corners and safeties busy.

It's going to be real interesting to see how they utilize the overall skill position talent this season.

Put down the game control, step back, walk away. Fitz is an outside WR. He isn't going to go bang in the middle at 36 years old. He's DHop before DHop, toss the ball in his vicinity and watch it come down.

It would be very exciting if all this works out, but I am taking the under. In fact, I am willing to bet $1 that from this point forward Josh Rosen has a better career than Kyler Murray.

Maybe. Drew Brees has had a better career than Phillip Rivers, but Phillip Rivers has had a pretty good career.

Their careers aren't over yet, but it looks like whoever bet on Rivers better be saving up a dollar to give to the guy who bet on Brees.

Fitzgerald has been playing primarily in the slot for the last 5 years. He led the NFL in receiving yards from the slot in 2017. He played 75% of his snaps from the slot in 2018.

NFL teams already use the spread offense, but just not all-the-time like one sees in the NCAA. Why? Because the NFL defensive talent overpowers spread concepts because players are more intelligent, bigger, stronger, and faster.
