Interestingly, Pendry was fired by Capers after the 1997 season at Carolina. Although, it was never confirmed, there was specualtion that Panthers owner Jerry Richardson made Capers fire Pendry, who was under fire because his offense was too conservative and unimaginative.

Is there something wrong with this picture? Can't anyone see that this is just a PR move to call off the dogs.

Play calling? Was play calling the reason why Carr has turned into a gutless coward on the field? Was play calling the reason why Babin and Peek can't play worth a damn? Was play calling the reason Buchanon is making Casserly prove to the world that he's an *****.

Now, let me see if I have this straight. Capers wants to play conservative, and run the ball, and Palmer wants to spread it out. They began with the 3 tight ends and tried to run the ball, which failed miserably. So they switched to a more wide open attack and lo and behold, start moving down the field.

So now it's Palmer who is fired? Well . . . I doubt very much that Palmer was fired because of "play calling". The real reason he was canned was that he showed his boss up.

Milo Hamilton had a saying: "They put a band-aid on a ten inch gash."
 
This is a mistake. Palmer is just being fed to the fans and whatever small chance the Texans had of generating any offense at all this season just went out the window with the designated villain.

In another month when Capers and Pendry are under heavy fire people on this board will be wishing they still had Chris Palm....oh what am I saying. They won't be doing anything like that. They'll be busy creating their newest troll accounts and screaming for blood about the wrong things like always.
 
"Scapegoat" was what hit my mind when I saw the first thread titled saying he was fired.

McNair is going to have to make some tough decisions at the end of this season and I don't believe it stops with Capers.
 
So Hervoyel, what would you have done? I'm betting you want Capers gone. Maybe McNair is trying to find out the real problem we are not improving. If he would of fired Capers today we would be in for an even more brutal season that is seems we will go through already. If they show up to play against Cinn then Capers can sleep well for another week. If we play like we have been the newest thread will read: Capers fired!
 
As I said in another post. Now with Capers showing more authority we can look forward to 1st down run 2nd down run 3rd down punt with a fake option to run and 4th down punt if the option failed. We need to broaden this offense not shut it down just so we don't have turnovers.

What would I have done? Let me see, what would I have done? Well, I'd have looked at the coaching history of both Dom Capers, Chris Palmer, and this Pendry fellow who appears to have been brought in by Dom for just such a day as this. Looking at their history I'd try to figure out who the Texans play like they're "descended" from. The answer is pretty obvious and I'm not about to go to the trouble of spelling it all out here. The Texans are from top to bottom a reflection of the man on the sideline with the notepad. The offense looks and acts nothing like a Chris Palmer coached offense, except in their resemblence to the 2nd year Cleveland Browns. That can be easily explained by their expansion origins.

The bottom line is that when Palmer calls an offense (with a reasonable level of talent on the field) it's exciting, puts up yards and points, and ranks highly compared to the rest of the league. When Dom Capers is the head coach of a team you get the offense they ran in Carolina and you get the offense we run today. Conservative to a fault, predictable in the extreme, and inflexible. That is what we're going to see out of Capers hand picked Bo-Bo for the rest of the year.

Me? I'm rooting for a long Texans losing streak that will demonstrate clearly what we've got left now that the one person who's got a clue offensively has been shown the door.
 
I wanted to see Capers and Fangio canned. Then promote Palmer and John Hoke to HC and DC respectively. Let Palmer do what he wants to do without quibbling with Dom and then let him and Charley go in January. Start from scratch. I agree Chris is a scapegoat for our team's troubles. You cannot blame him for the lack of pass rush or takeaways. If those problems persist will they fire Fangio too? Doubt it.

I agree ! I will be shocked if the 4 WR set returns. Wasn't Capers quoted as saying something to the effect of he didn't like what he saw on offense. It was probably Palmer running the 4 WR set.
Why are they offering up Palmer. I would rather see Fangio's head offered. At least would have an apparent up and coming coach in Hoke to replace him. Except Hoke's secondary looked pitiful on Sunday

True. Casserly has done well with his original 1st round selections, but he has botched a ton of other draft selections, trades, etc. Babin and Buchanon represent 5 Texan draft picks and were both benched during the game. Hollings was a 2nd round selection flushed. Charles Hill didn't make it past our inaugural year. I don't blame him for Joppru. Nobody could have seen that coming. However, CC's track record with his 2nd and 3rd round selections hasn't been good.

His good picks outside of the 1st round so far have been:
DD, Faggins, Pitts, and who else?

That's how I feel right now. As much as dis-like Palmer I don't think he was to blame of for the ineptitude of the offense. And what do we do to correct the problem, we fire teh guy who tried to strecth the field and in his place put a guy who has been fired for being to conservative? I see alot more two and three TE sets in our future.

I hat eo to say it but....this season is done. Start thinking draft picks, and hope that Carr survives to tell the tale of teh next 14 games, (I think Carr is goingo to mimick Aikman's carerr, minus the SB contending teams: Slow start, one good year, career over do to the tremendoud beatings he absorbed. Sad)
 
Atleast im really looking foward to the Cinncinati game instead of trying to come up with excuses on why we sucked. We will all get to see if it was Palmer's poor play calling, which I've heard many times from many people it was Dom overriding. Or if it's dom capers that is the real reason our team plays with no heart and pride.
 
aye yi yi...I have no doubt that we are 2 games into our longest season...and very little doubt that it is the beginning of our worst season, yet.
 
I thought we should have changed the entire regime today and have these next two weeks to work in the new system. Yes I said it, change the entire staff in week 3. Jimmy Johnson could have taken the rest of the season to get his new system in place and we would also have the #1 pick in the draft.

Initial reaction to this news (which I learned 2 minutes ago): ditto. Right idea, wrong coach. But if the other coaches were indeed safe and no lineup shakeups were planned, I'll take this over doing nothing. If you're going to make a change, do it in the bye week and do it EARLY.

I think I'd have a stronger feeling one way or the other if I better understood the interaction between Capers and Palmer. I kept hearing different stories about whose offense was really being called out there. Not sure if we ever will know what was going on.

I'm gonna go buy some hurricane supplies, get the house ready, and then maybe I'll think on it some more. (@#$&(*!@ hurricanes. ENOUGH.) :hairpull:
 
as frustrating as it is to see the Texans perform they way they have, i don't know if McNair or Casserly could justify a total regime change. if you think things look out of sync now, imagine how bad it would be if these players were asked to learn new schemes and plays on the fly. i think McNair/Casserly lets the rest of the season play out and will make the wholesale changes everyone's been clamoring for if no significant improvement is made (which would be sad if that was the case).

even though i was never convinced Palmer was the right guy for the job in the first place, i do have to concede that his firing probably was PR-motivated.

on the other hand, i do have a renewed sense of optimism for this season. the playoffs are out of the question, but i'm hoping this marks a turnaround of sorts.
 
McNair couldn't fire the HC at this point, what would he do in the offseason
to sell tickets and build new hope for the 2006 season if this whole thing doesn't get turned around before year end. And I'm not sure that
Palmer would have got fired now if not for the bye week - the press and fans have 2 weeks to howl and the noise would have gotten intolerable. I think the move would have been to fire Capers and promote Palmer to HC. Everybody wants to make Hoak DC, but he's just younger and therefor more appealing to a lot of the fan base than Fangio.
The problem with the team is across the Board.
And yesterday was also a really bad day for Cass - two of his biggest moves, in the form of the Babin & Buchanan acquisitions, got benched.
No problem though, I may ***** about the Texans now but they are still my team ! And if we end up something like, oh 2-14, we might still be 10-6 next year. That's how the NFL is these days. I waited 3 years for results, another year or 2, hey whatever, still glad we got the franchise. Consider the alternative.

Nice to finally see some accountability for the players though. That is probably the biggest positive I take from the last game.
 
I like this move, firing Palmer.

Was Palmer the source of all our problems? we CANNOT say for sure. I think alot of us feel that he was only part of the problem, but we wont know that for sure for a few more weeks.

Firing Capers at this point in the season would be a bad move IMO. Lets hold onto him.. at the end of the season, if things dont fix themselves, we will be able to pick from the other released headcoaches to replace any gaps in our coaching staff.. whether it be OC, DC, or HC.. or all three.

For now.. I like this change.. hopefully it will boost the spirits of our players a bit.. let them know that we are willing to cut people loose if they arent helping the team win.
