Man, how great would it be to pick up Derrick Johnson. I would gladly give up my first, second, and one of my thirds.. and maybe even a 2nd or 3rd next year to move up and get Derrick Johnson.

You say we need a pass rush? hes your guy.. and he seems like Texan material from an attitude standpoint too.

maybe we can give up carr and johnson also. that just seems like to much to give up for one guy. maybe we trade up but we would probably have to give up first second and our first next year but a third this year. seems like to much to give up for one player, this isn't basketball. we can find a good lb later, i would rather have lance any way.

well the difference is that, assuming Johnson had the right attitude for our team, he would be a PERFECT fit. And he is the best LB in the draft. better than Lance.

AND how would be able to make an immediate impact.. AND he would be a much needed playmaker on defense.. AND we would only be giving up 1 draft pick if we gave our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Uhhhh....., my math skills aren't that great, but wouldn't that add up to 2 draft picks given up? I sure hope you're not going to use the argument that it's an extra 3rd round pick. This team still needs depth at several positions & giving away extra picks won't help. I say we solidify our depth this year & look to add the impact players, starting next year.

yes that is the arguement im going to use :). Its all a matter of perspective. and ya we need depth.. but not quite as badly as we needed it last year. the only place on defense we are TRUELY lacking depth now is on the line.. and a 3rd and 4th rounder can probably fill that up for us a bit. And we COULD use another quality LB.. especially an ILB.

really if you look at it... we are doing alright at CB. Faggins is coming along nicely.. Wright, when we saw him last year, was doing alright. We have Coleman still and he can go back to CB if necessary. The only "problem" we might have is Glenn getting old.. but he will make it another year and CB can be our primary concern in 2006. Besides that would give Robinson another year to grow before we bring in another rookie.

FS we are doing good with Coleman.. and as long as we resign Mcree we will have a quality backup. Id actually like to see Mcree start.

SS is looking alot better now with Earl starting and brown & simmons as backups.

the LBs could use another player. at OLB we have peek backing up.. which is good but not exactly deep when you are playing a 3-4. but who do we have backing up sharper and foreman? according to our depth chart.. DaShon Polk and Troy Evans.. say huh? id much rather have our all star playmaker in Johnson working alongside Sharper.. with Foreman being an above average backup. And Johnson could move to OLB if it became necessary.

Dline.. as I said.. we need depth.. but really, you can get real good 3-4 linemen in the middle rounds. using the 3rd and 4th on lineman would probably be our strategy even if we didnt use our 2nd and 1st to get Johnson.

oh.. and the problem with adding impact players next year is that, the sooner we get our impact players.. the sooner we get to playoff quality. the 5 year plan is just around the corner.. having an impact player with a season under his belt would be prefferable to starting more rookies in year 5. I think we should get the impact players now.. and focus on depth next draft when we already have a quality starting lineup.

keep in mind that we have Free Agency too.. and FA is just as good a way to add depth as the Draft.. if not a better way.

i don't think that will be enough. dj is probably going to go in the top 7 and we are looking at a pick in the mid to late teens. in previous drafts it has taken two first rounders to move like that. chicago gave up their #4 to nyj for 14th and 22nd in 2003. new orleans traded 17th and 18th for the 6th. this year the browns gave up a 2nd rounder to move up ONE spot. a 2nd and a 3rd does not equal a first rounder. so we will probably have to give up a 2 1st and maybe even a third pending on who we trade with. that seems like to much for a team that isn't one player away from the super bowl.

While I think Faggins has played pretty well, I don't see him as a starting CB. Good nickle, but not an NFL starting CB. I think we need another Dunta quality CB in the first and probably a good DL or ILB in the second. The only change to that would be if we need to get a TE, then I would take the TE in the second and then the DL/ILB with the 3rd. Naturally that could all change with any FA guys we pick up.

Personally I think that DJ is the best player in the draft, but i dont think that there is any way we could get him, and with the way the o-line has run blocked this year, Im not sure he would be our best choice if we move up. If we go defense i would have to take a 1st glance at one of those top 3 CBs, Antrell, Marlin, or Corey then I would also love to have TJ out of GA. If we go ofense Im thinking Alex Barron or Jamall Brown.

Still I would love to get DJ if he fell into our laps or was still available around 10 were we would have reasonable bargaining tools but thats more than likely not going to happen, we had a better chance of getting that FS last year. But I still think DJ is the best player in the draft period.

If we were to pick another cornerback this year and the draft i think we would have to go with some size Dunta and Glenn are awesome corners, but we dont really have any size when it comes to that position, i think we need someone who can jump with the best like Moss, to bat the ball down if put in that position, because with all do respect if Dunta or Glenn had to go one on one with someone his size we'd be in trouble.

First of all no one can jump with Moss but the top 3 CBs in this years draft do have pretty nice sizes
  • Antrel Rolle - 6-1, 202
  • Marlin Jackson - 6-1, 196
  • Corey Webster - 6-0, 201

If they have the speed, moves and vertical jump ability, they would work nicely. With the rules the way they are, quick reaction and recovery speed is what is most important.

cory and antrel arn't blazers, they play a physical bump and run coverage. rolle runs around a high 4.4 to low 4.5, that is why some people say he might be better off at safty with the new rules. with that being said he can cut on a dime and recover very well. webster is the same type of player, he will fair better in the nfl than this year because he will have more safty help because he isn't in saban's blitz happy defense. i don't know that much about jackson but i do know that he can play. the problem is rolle probably won't get passed the cowboys and jackson will be off the board soon after, so we want a cb hopefully no one takes webster.

don't get me wrong i would love to get dj, he is the best prospect in the nation, if we had a top 10 pick and needed to move up a few spots i wouldn't think twice, he is a can't miss prospect, something we couldn't say about sean t last year. but i think we would just have to give up to much to get him and we arn't there yet. we still have pressing needs at just about every position on defense.

Rolle is a physical cover, a field general & would be the best of the bunch blitzing off the corner to pressure/sack the QB, Dunta is not big enough so he would be the best compliment, however should be gone in the top 5 picks. Marlin is a true cover corner who plays tight to the reciever & solid tackler. Webster is alot like Dunta but without the explosivness. Justin Miller is actually the best corner after Rolle, has explosive speed like Dunta and much bigger at 200 lbs.

As far as DJ goes here is one scouting report from the huddle-

http://www.thehuddlereport.com/THRfree/FreeProfiles/DerrickJohnson.htm

Thanks for the link BL. From that scouting report it sounds like DJ is not very good when people run right at him. Sounds more like a pursuit linebacker than a run stopper.

DJ does have a problem sometimes with going for the big hit and not wrapping up, but he definitely doesn't avoid tackles like Drew Boylhart implies. Boylhart likes to get a little colorful when profiling a player, but that doesn't hide the fact that he is an internet scout and not a "professional" scout. He has some good stuff, but he also misses a lot.....and this is one of those times.

It is true that Derrick Johnson is better in pursuit than he is at the point of attack, but that is just because he is absolutely incredible in pursuit. So is Ray Lewis. If you are able to get a lineman to block him, then you want to run at DJ just like you would at Ray Lewis. However, if you see either of them unblocked stepping into the hole you had planned on running into you are in trouble.

DJ isn't just a pursuer like Boylhart implies, but he is also a punishing LB who is really good at the point of attack.

Yes we can. And we dont have to give up any draft picks to do it!

Just go 5-11 again. Its that simple. DJ will be a top 10 pick. So dont get your hopes up on him. The Texans will be sitting around 17th pick come draft day. And I do not see them trading up for an OLB, when we spent a 1st round pick on one last year.

DE/RB/S that is what i think we will go for.
