Details are few at the moment, but the crash included Newton’s car flipped over on a bridge and another involved, near the intersection of Church Street and I-277, close to Bank of America Stadium.

Funny how things get blown out of whack. They were reporting here on the local sports station that he broke both legs, then come back 10 minutes later to say that he wasn't injured. Hopefully he is OK.

Pretty nasty looking/sounding. Supposedly rolled that truck a few times.

Just heard on the triple threat (610) that contrary to the report that said he rolled it, video shows it just went on it's side and slid

If he had no injuries why was he loaded up on the stretcher like that? Unless that's another guy that looks like him.

The roof is crushed down. I think it had to have rolled. A witness said it rolled 2-3 times

He's tough, but I don't think he'd play through this. Glad he's going to be ok though

Cam Newton has "2 transverse process fractures in lower back," Panthers say. No other internal injuries. I'm en route to Charlotte for more.

If you recall, Tony Romo had a transverse fracture in his back and missed just one game. Cam Newton has of those two fractures

Looks like it, just reporting on what they said. Perhaps the video picked up after the roll

Possibly. I was watching NFLN at lunch. They were saying the witness saw the car try to cut across in front of Cam before the actual overpass. The truck rolled that far to end up on the overpass

I got in a fender bender with very minor injuries a few years back and they put me on a stretcher. Just precautionary in case of potential neck/spine injuries.

Must have been going at a fairly high speed then

I didn't think that was him. I'm not sure the truck was the vehicle he was driving.

But I'm probably wrong.

I don't think they are. If they're built correctly they're just as safe as any 4X4 lifted from the manufacturer.

Don't want to get into a long thing on it but it's simple physics. That equipment is for very specific purposes none of it having to do with street safety. There's no getting around that a higher center of gravity, harder rubber, smaller contact patch, higher rotating mass and higher overall mass all make for a less safe street vehicle.

A 4X4 with a lift is dangerous? If so, a large percentage of Texas is driving dangerous trucks.

Absolutely .... Especially at highway speeds or above , that high center of gravity makes them very susceptible to rolling with quick input.

A witness told TMZ that a sedan T-boned Newton's pickup truck from the left side. According to reports from the scene, his Dodge Ram flipped over at least three times on the road.
When the pickup truck came to rest on its ride side, Newton was able to crawl out the back window and walk over the shoulder of the highway, where he laid down.
According to reports, when paramedics arrived on the scene Newton initially told them he did not want to go to the hospital, but he eventually relented.

Yes, the higher center of gravity is obvious. I guess I have a different opinion of dangerous when it comes to vehicles. What I consider dangerous are the Smart Car, Miatas, Soul, Sportage and the other little box looking things on the road.

I'd much rather be in that truck in this accident than one of the cars I listed above.

It is much like my daughter's accident. Her little car just clipped a jeep that rolled over due to the high center of gravity and threw out the passenger. Her car lost a bumper. The speed was <40 MPH. If I were in a head on, I'd agree that more mass is better, but not high mass, low mass.

With today's cars bigger is not safer.

And the best way to minimize an accident is to be able to maneuverable enough avoid it entirely or greatly reduce it.

Smaller contact patch?
My lifted Yukon has tires that are both larger diameter and wider than OEM.
Hard to figure how that results in a smaller contact patch.
Maybe mud terrain tires are not radials, so less contact?

Also, I've been wondering if they're actually softer. They leave a lot of black tracks in my driveway unlike any others I've had.

It helps to have oversize tires, but it's a trade off for raising the center of gravity. It did not appear that Cam's vehicle had much to offset the high center of gravity (only slightly oversized tires) or protection (real roll bar) in case of a rollover. This is what makes it so dangerous

Off-road tires have more cut-out/blocking than street use tires and therefore a smaller contact patch for the same size tire.

Doh! Figured it was something i wasn't considering.
On the other hand, if this is dangerous, then sign me up and call Will Robinson.

The absolute safest car you would ever drive looks exactly the opposite:

[IMGwidthsize=700]http://cdn-www.rsportscars.com/images/formula-1/2008-vodafone-mclaren-mercedes-mp4-23-formula-1-car/mcf108_051600.jpg[/IMG]

Look, a big part of this discussion is the portion the big truck advocates never consider - not getting into an accident in the first place.

Sure, until it ran into a truck like this:

BTW, that truck is my daily driver family truckster with a rear facing child seat. It has been in the mud more times that the wife would like. lol

It's designed to run into walls. It's not scared of trucks. :kitten:

I'll just remind you of the implicit statement in my original question - I have no problem with people who need and/or use off-road vehicles for their intended purpose including if they use them in a dual role. But posers whether they be on sportbikes or in big jacked up 4x4's that never see dirt - well they're posers. And the rationalization of safety is just that (and at the expense of safety to others).

Exactly.

As an aside, I really like Formula 1 racing. They are going to have a new series - Formula E - of all electric cars. Should be interesting.

This, I completely agree with. I usually laugh at the one's who buy the F250-350 diesels, jack them up to the Heavens and never see a speck of dirt due to spit polishing every 5 minutes. Little dick syndrome

Now, would you rather your child (hypothetically) drive a ride like Michaelm posted (nice ride, man)? Or like the thing you posted?

Either way, I'll stick with my daily driver truck and my big ass hunting rig (that I built myself) while y'all cruise your Prius

Yeah, not a Prius.

I tell my non-hypothetical kids the same thing. If you don't need something bigger for its utility, drive a small high performance car...and when you're braking keep your eyes on your rear view to make sure you aren't about to be run down by some truck that can't brake.

Even goofier when those same doofuses stop to go over speed bump in parking lots. Same for SUVs that are timid about small bumps.

Whatever...

I like what I like. I've got a 2002 Z66 Avalanche. It's a two wheel drive truck that has the Z71 suspension. & I'm thinking about jacking it up, because I like the way it looks. I'll never go off-road, I know that. But it's what I like. I couldn't care less what you or anyone else thinks about the car I drive.
