Texans | Brown Named Starter at SS

Nick Schenck, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans head coach Dom Capers has named SS C.C. Brown the opening day starter at strong safety. "It means a lot," Brown said. "The only thing I hope doesn't happen is that I let (Capers) down. That would be a big mistake. But if I just go out there and play hard, I'll do fine."

Wow, I thought he had played well, but he also made a few mistakes. Anyone thing maybe Earl's injury is still bothering him or is this purly a talent move?

The story has been up on the front page... Congrats to the rook.

Under any normal circumstance, C.C. Brown would have been overcome with joy.

But with thousands of displaced families filing into Reliant Park, and countless others in the Gulf Coast region seeking refuge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, these are far from ordinary times.

In any case, the low-key rookie from Greenwood, Miss. cracked a slight smile on Friday, moments after head coach Dom Capers named the sixth-round draft choice the Texans’ starting strong safety heading into the regular season opener at Buffalo on Sept. 11.

“It means a lot,” Brown said of starting. “The only thing I hope doesn’t happen is that I let (Capers) down. That would be a big mistake. But if I just go out there and play hard, I’ll do fine.”

I had to do a bit of searching to refresh my memory but as i thought G.Earl hasnt played a single down in any of the pre-season games . I'd wager that if Earl was completely healthy he would start ..... Brown has played well but its not often you want to start a rookie at his position . I dont think they have a choice.

Good thing you can't bet. It seems coaches aren't as high as they used to be on Earl. Maybe his lack of passion or interest in playing for the Texans has caused this. But whatever it is, its obvious that the coaches feel confident with the way CC Brown brings the PAIN.....

Have a good weekend mates....

this is just rediculous. an injury does not affect someones "passion or interest in playing for the Texans" as you say. either earl is not quite as far as progressed or cc brown has just impressed the coaching staff enough that he is getting the nod.

please dont question our players passion.

So based on your logic, Earl is not starting b/c his shoulder still limits him, or CC Brown impressed the coaching staff enough for them to sit Earl. So in conclusion there is nothing else that could have happened? Do you believe that the coaching staff tells us the entire story?

Ok let me not continue, all I'm doing is telling you something that I heard. Not from a 'forum', but from a first-hand source. You can read into anyway you wish.

what i do agree with you is that the coaching staff is confident in cc brown.

as to where i dont agree with you (or believe you for that matter) is that earl is less passionate for football or not interested in playing for the texans.

and lets just leave that at that

The season will unfold a lot ... we'll see ...

coleman is not a dinosaur like people say he is. and he does not blow plays like rookies sometimes do (our other starting safety this preseason).

coleman has eyes on him, but they are his fellow teammates looking at him for leadership and experience.

What an incredible and emotional story: Long-shot 6th round pick from small,
little known southern college who's Guard unit is in Afganastan doesn't just
make the NFL team that drafted him, he'll be starting for them in regular season opener ! And he's going to spend his Labor Day weekend going back home to see if all of his family survived Hurricane Katrina !
What's the old line about fiction being stranger than reality?
This is a story for "Hollywood" John McClain to jump on and promote to all of his show biz buddies out on the West Coast.
We gotta have one of my favorites in the
movie - Samual Jackson, but he's too old to be CC. In the movie let's make Capers a Bro, so then we got Coach Jackson. I mean Capers is so boring anyway. OK who's gonna be Casserly, the guy who made the savy pick on the second day of the college draft.
Most of all of course, who plays CC ?

Whoa a rookie beat our old safeties eh? Kid must have skill....

B-O-B has his eye on you MR.COLEMAN!!! The target is on Mr.Mckinney and You! Yes MR.COLEMAN! I happen to think most conversions made against us is because the safeties are not where they are suppose to be.
Put down the Bud....there are TWO S positions and they do different things in the defense. Coleman is not in any trouble and is one of our few potential pro bowl level players. Brown beat out injury prone Earl at STRONG Safety...not Coleman at FREE Safety.
