BUM on 610 right now

Man......I'm almost getting a tear to my eye listening to BUM right now. I know he is getting old and it is great to hear his voice, but he sounds very frail and he is clearly having some issues.

He made a comment that he thought the Cowboys vs Texans game was today. He also had a bad cough/throat thing while on the air.

Anyway, just makes me remember him and the good old days. I mean, he's 87 I know but it just sucks to hear him like that.

Hail to you BUM....you were one of the good guys man!

You know what Reliant Park "needs" don't you? A Bronze statue of Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell together. Bum in his cowboy hat* with Earl in uniform standing beside him with his helmet off. Both of them looking like the would on the sideline would be perfect.

That needs to happen.



*Yes, I know he never wore it inside the dome but the statue would be outside, ergo the hat would be appropriate.

Please don't get me wrong-I know that and I'm sure they would never approve of the team in Tennessee.

My point was that unfortunately I wouldn't count on them getting a statue at Reliant stadium because they were never Texans-they were part of the organization that is now in Tennessee.

I would never, never put them in a Tack uniform.

There was absolutely no insult meant and I humbly appologize to Bum and Earl if there was any doubt of where they belong-in HOUSTON OILERS BLUE!!!!

As long as logos aren't involved it's a non-issue. Obscure the logo on the helmet and the rest is easy. Bud Adams doesn't own either of their likenesses nor does he own the number "34".

As long as the thing doesn't say "Oilers" on it we're good.

Start a petition eh? That sounds like fun.

I was really just teasin ya a little anyway!! We all know Bum and Earl are 100% HOUSTON!! They are legends, and something needs to be done to honor them. It's a great idea.

Easy. Earl could be holding his helmet under his arm. No Oilers logo.

The City of Houston and all professional teams here should retire the #34 (although the Astros and Rockets already have)..

I just sent an email to John McClain at the Chronicle. I think that his thoughts on this would valuable. He knows so many people with the Texans, the old Oilers, and with Harris County. I just asked him where he would begin this process and who he would get in touch with first if he wanted to try to get something like this done.

I'll post his answer to me if I get one (I expect I will, he's been very good about answering things I've emailed him in the past). Who knows, maybe he'll mention the idea in his blog or somewhere in the Chronicle. In the meantime I'm going to start an online petition. It seems kind of futile to me (I don't know how seriously anyone takes those) but it might help to gauge interest in this. When I figure out how to do that I'll post a link to it as well.

I'd totally be down with the idea! It would be about time too and it would be easy enough to keep it so that Satan err Bud up in possum hollar couldn't say jack about it.

Also, this would be the perfect middle finger to him just like he likes to throw around.:bender:

While we're on the subject, I think there should be some kind of tribute to Moon too. Just an aside.

Oh GAWD!!! Here we go again. I will NEVER sign any petition that has anything to do with trying to make Warren Moon a saint!! SOOOO, if one is started for Bum and Earl, leave Moom off or I won't sign it, and I'll do everything I know to keep it from getting anywhere!!

I have no illusions of Moon as a saint by any means. I also do not know what you mean by here we go again? Was there already an attempt to do this?

I am not saying nor was I implying that Moon should have anything near the type of tribute (like a statue as suggested) that has been suggested for BUM and Earl.

Nevermind!! We've just had several debates about WM on this board, and I truly don't want to do it again. NOR, do I want to highjack this thread. I apologize if I came across hostile. Just the mention of that man's name makes my blood boil, so I'll try to get a grip! Let's procede talking about BUM!!!

I wish the Texans would get something done before Bum goes on to football heaven!! He's a huge part of HOUSTON football history!

You know, that picture more or less perfectly captures what I'd like to see. Of course I think it would be best if Earl had his helmet off so we could see his face but the general pose is right there.

Texans Talk is behind this and maybe we can so something here. If you want to do an online petition create a Facebook fan page and then get everyone and their mother to "like" it. You will get a ton more exposure doing it on FB than you will with that online petition site. This is because when you "Like" something it gets shared with all of your friends, then their friends, and so on, and so on, and so on, (kinda like that old shampoo commercial).

You know, to be perfectly honest I sincerely doubt that Bud Adams would say a damn thing about an Oiler logo on the side of a helmet in this case.

I bet the Titans would be fine with it and like I said, if they were not for some reason it really wouldn't matter. There are ways around this. I couldn't personally get behind putting a Texans logo anywhere on this. It's not about Oilers or Texans. It's about these two men and the era they made happen. That's when Houston truly fell in love with NFL football. Yes, I know the AFL Oilers had titles and the Cowboys are big in this market but that late 70's Luv Ya Blue era was when many Houston football fans completely bought into Houstons team. It's a different team now but chances are if you were an Oiler fan and remember Bum & Earl first hand then you're a Texans fan as an extension of that affection.

I can help with FB if you need it. You can also reference the Johnny U statue which is outside of the Baltimore Ravens stadium, not the Colts stadium so the precedence has been set already.

Sent to my mom who is a former PR person for IBM and my step dad currently is.

My mom lives in Dripping and has some connections still.

Apparently Bums daughter teaches special ed out in DSISD and me and my mom will be at a football game Friday night for the Dripping Tigers against Travis.

Anyway read below the response she sent me;

I emailed Gavin the program director at 610 am and let him know what was going on and to pass it on to mention to the guys there if he was able to etc.

Will let you know if I get any kind of a repsonse or hopefully we all just hear it get mentioned on air.

I'm sure I will need some help. I've done not much with facebook but maintain my own page and post status updates from time to time (really rarely if you want the truth). I use it mostly to give relatives access to old pictures of me and my family so I've never made a page for anything other than "me". The page is created but there's precious little on there.

It appears Facebook is down. There must be some national network outage going on since we also went down for an hour.

Actually I think some of their servers are on the same network as us if I remember correctly.
 
Well, I might be meeting Bum's Daughter Friday night FWIW, hopefully it helps. This has already been passed on to her via family connections. I have emailed a ton of people and contacted some radio networks so hopefully something somewhere cathes on.

Must remember to do the facebook thing.......i don't think i have logged in in 6months.....

I think it would be fitting if they were standing on the east side of Reliant looking out toward the dome. It would probably be even more fitting after the dome is gone. To have them both looking out over the ground it once stood on.
