BUF expected to release QB Matt Cassel

We could have a full set! :D

What are the chances they hold on to him just hoping to get something out of him in a trade? I only see the Texans picking him up if he were released. Contract too big to trade for, no?
I don't see anybody paying for Cassel, and BUF likely needs him this year.

If we pick up Cassell, then there should absolutely be no doubt whatsoever what OB thinks of Mallett.

How do you figure that? Savage is out 4-6 weeks. We need someone and Cassell would fit the bill perfectly for a 3rd string emergency guy.

We don't need anyone to shore up the roster because our third string QB has a boo-boo. & Cassel is the last guy you'd want to bring in as an emergency back up scout team operator making vet minimum.

A Boo Boo? He just got IR'd for the season. That's some Boo Boo.

Tim Tebow is available too isn't he? The Eagles let him go.
Are we officially in the market for a third-string quarterback?
I didn't follow up on the severity of Tom Savage's injury.

Our third string QB has more than a boo boo. He's out for the year on IR without the designation to return. Therefore, we DO need someone on either the roster or PS to perform scout duties and possibly be available to back up Mallett if Hoyer goes down.

That was not the general understanding when I wrote that. The panicked frenzy to replace our third string QB was premature.

"Someone" not necessarily a veteran QB. Could be anyone. Justin Tuggle has experience playing QB. Devier Posey was used as a QB one week last season (I understand he isn't on the team any more, just using him as an example of someone other than a QB being used as the scout team QB).

Still, I don't believe we need to pay vet minimum for our 3rd string QB.

There are several possibilities for both a roster spot or the PS. Thomas Logan/Christian Ponder/Matt Cassel as veterans and several PS candidates. But with our recent history of injury at QB, I can't imagine not having a third waiting in the wings. A new environment might make either of the first two look like a brilliant move at "minimum" risk.

Depends, they were hurting for roster spots already. Now they have one they didn't expect.

Didn't we carry three last year? Or was Savage on the PS?
We carried Savage because we thought he would get snatched off the PS. It's probably why they let Keenan go since there wasn't space for 4 QBs on the 53 after they got Mallett. I believe the original thought was Fitz and Keenan on the 53 with Savage on the PS. But things changed.

Yeah we did. Don't think we could risk him getting to the practice squad. Now we have him protected on IR.

I'm not saying we won't get somebody but I don't think we 'have to' or that OB thinks we always have to have 3.

The #Texans are planning to sign QB Zac Dysert to the practice squad, who was waived by Chicago. That'll be their 3rd QB for practice.

6'3, 230 lbs.

Interesting choice, but probably makes some sense when you look at his background.

Just before the last preseason game, the Bears claimed quarterback Zac Dysert off waivers after he had spent two years with the Denver Broncos......2013 on the regular roster and 2014 on their PS. What probably had something to do with O'brien picking him is that he has trained with Jeff Christensen, the Chicago area quarterbacks coach who has also trained Jimmy Garoppolo (Patriots), Drew Stanton (Cardinals), Kirk Cousins (Redskins), and Tom Savage (Texans).

Went in a different direction.

Reportedly Texans offered Matt cassel, but he took a better offer.

I kinda figured that's why we didn't get him last season as well. He was already on a sweet deal with the Vikes, but he opted out, I'm speculating he thought we'd pay him similar to them.

We were lowballing everyone last year. I think they offered him the $3M we offered Fitz, he turned it down & went back to Minnesota for $5M.
