Bryce Petty

I'm convinced the people that love Petty just look at the box scores. Even on his good days when you actually watch him there is nothing that stands out.

I agree that he has tools. Good size, good arm, seems smart. But he is throwing to wide open guys on every play. Every time he's forced to hit a small window he's off.

Art Briles puts guys in a position to succeed at the college level. Pros, not so much.

Agree. And I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Petty is a hell of a college player.

But I just don't see this high NFL pick that others do. He throws to wide open guys all night and still can't even hit 60%. He's not accurate.

Plus, Baylor's offense is probably the most simplistic I've ever seen. They run six plays.

LOL, and this kind of thinking is the main reason why Alex Smith was taken number 1 and the reason why Aaron Rodgers fell, people painted him as another Tedford QB.

Petty's 4th Quarter is what I thought we were going to see this year. As disappointing as he has played this year, his game winning performance tonight was pretty spectacular.

Maybe I'm crazy but I wasn't all that impressed with Petty today (talking game as a whole, 4th quarter was impressive). He couldn't complete anything over the middle of the field and his numbers were pretty pedestrian until TCU decided to stop covering guys in the 4th quarter.

He throws a nice deep ball, but he can't complete anything in the intermediate game. It's either a screen or a go route.

No you are not crazy. I have back away from this QB recently as I have others. I am seeing less and less potential in many of the top guys.

This is the guy that I am excited about. I am no scout, but watching him, there is something there. Texans drafting top 10 this year and this would be my guy.

Petty is completing 55% of his passes in an offense that is designed for a QB to complete 60% of his passes in his sleep. Art Briles hasn't had a QB complete less than 60% of his passes in a season since 2004.

The fact that Petty has guys running wide open on every play and he's only hitting 55% is a major concern. He has accuracy issues, poor ball placement, and responds horribly to pressure.

Some mock drafts have Bryce Petty coming to us. It would be very difficult for me to root for Bryce Petty. I want a QB in the 2nd, but not Petty. He looks like a system QB, just like every other QB Art Briles has coached up.

The way I look at it is that they're all system QBs. I need to know if he can be my system QB.

I am not sure but I have a gut feeling he will be a good pro and would fit well in our system. I have seen "Luck" like quality, "Big Ben " similarities, and the heart of a champion. Hidden gem, and lost of upside, even Gruden loves him! Going forward he would be the long term Drew Brees like savior for our team.
Have Mallet start and Petty study I see a good combo there.
IMHO

Greg Cosell: Petty was best thrower in his Combine group. (including Mariota/Winston)

Jon Gruden: Petty is the best pure arm talent in this draft.

I'm torn on Petty. I like the guy. I feel like he's the QB I really want based on athleticism, smarts, intangibles, and arm strength. But I also feel like he will struggle to learn an NFL offense and has some accuracy issues. He's a guy that is probably going to go in the first round, but he's going to need to learn before he sees the field, I feel like. I think Art Briles could make me look like a decent QB, so I'm leery about his guys anymore.

I can't help rooting for the guy though.

I see what you're saying & agree the risk is definitely there. But after seeing what OB did with Fitz last year, I'd love to see him get a guy like Petty... I'd love to see him get a guy like Mariota, but that's not going to happen.

Everything Petty is going to have to learn & have to deal with at the next level will be the same things Mariota will have to learn & deal with as well. & I haven't seen anything to make me believe Mariota is more apt to learn it than Petty is.

AAMoF, I think Petty's chances of succeeding in the NFL are better here with OB & Godsey than Mariota's chances in New York with Gailey & Todd Bowles.

I only wished he hadn't played at Baylor..... haters will be coming out of the woodwork if talks about the Texans looking at him get to be more "real"

Justis Mosqueda @JuMosq

Apparently Bill O'Brien likes Bryce Petty more than Mariota and Winston.
Landry seems legit. Sat in on multiple team player interviews at the Combine.

But how much does that really mean? He thought Savage was as good as any QB in last year's bunch.

He obviously doesn't conform to the the rest of us as to what a successful QB looks like.

of course I'm being sarcastic.

Said that O'Brien likes Mariota more than Winston, Petty more than both.

So, does O'Brien think Petty is worth a 1st round pick? I would think so. Hard to believe there's anyone that doesn't think Mariota and Winston are 1st round worthy.

Sounded like most NFL guys (Kubiak included) like Mariota most.

OTOH, this could be a smokescreen.

This draft doesn't think Petty is a first round pick and maybe not a second either.

Or just a throwaway answer since Texans aren't "in play" so decided to talk up a kid he likes as a person.

If Savage was early 4th then Petty should be a mid 3rd. That's were I would grade him, doesn't mean some team, possibly Texans don't take a stab on him in the 2nd.

Question about Petty is accuracy...

I've heard some veteran scouts say he's wildly inaccurate and other veteran scouts highlight his accuracy. Odd divergence that I hope to get clarity on in the future.

One thing I know: O'Brien very highly values accuracy.

couple things that bother me. he is coming from spread & he has to have a clean pocket. we'll never know for sure but what if David Carr had a clean pocket from the beginning of his NFL career? Texans have never been known for having a clean pocket from which their QB's can throw from. One thing from short sample size on Savage that struck me was his poor footwork. In that respect Petty reminds me of him. Petty is accurate when he does move & set his feet but too often its all upper body torso movement with feet not set in athletic move. Mallet to lesser extent.

Petty has accuracy on deep/short throws and struggles with intermediate throws. What worries me about Petty is his ability to read defenses and adjust to the speed of the game. In a way he's kind of like Savage, very raw with a great skillset.

Something that Petty has referred to about himself -- all arm. (Looked better at Combine to me)

Concern is he's been working with George Whitfield for at least 3 years now. So does Whitfield suck or can't Petty break his "all arm" habit???

Honest question. Which QBs have actually noticeably improved after working with Whitfield?

That's what I'm wondering. He seems to be great at selling himself and garnering publicity for the QB prospects... but 1) is he teaching what someone like O'Brien believes and 2) is he doing so effectively?

Or is it just hard to ingrain changes? The Jaguars QB worked with a QB coach predraft but reverted right back to his known habits once the whistle blew.

It sounds to me like OB thinks all of them are 4th round or lower picks. Not everybody is QB centric.

One NFL coach told me last month he thinks Petty is "the most natural passer" in this draft class and that he would not be shocked if Petty's the best QB of this group in four years. The coach said he watched Baylor's Michigan State game and saw Petty make all the throws the NFL would ever ask of him. However, since you don't see a lot of progression (reads) as a scout, you don't see the evidence and you have to project him since Baylor runs so many option routes while he's just "bouncing around back there."

The Article is more about "spread QBs" & the NFL draft, but I thought I'd drop this here.

I think he's got a good shot at getting some playing time in Ny... maybe not this year, but soon.
