Brown's Winslow in Motorcycle accident

I hope he can still play. I really want to see what Romeo can do with Winslow, and Edwards.

Isnt stuff like that a big no-no when you sign a NFL contract?

It depends on who is agent is. I am guessing it wasnt in his contract because it wasnt mentioned in the article. Otherwise he can lose some money.

At the rate he is going he may never see playing time again, he is turning in to another wasted 1st round pick from the Butch Davis era.

I hope the guy is ok, seems to be a little careless, riding without his helmet straped on.

He's a SOLDJAH! No helmet be holding this guy back. That motorcycle is trying to take him down and he is going to take it down first!

(i hope hes ok)

Winslow's head is so big, I'm surprised he could get it on over his ego, much less get the strap fastened.

Man I just want to see what this guy has to offer because on Madden he kicks booty but looks like we may never see what he has if he has more injuries.

Why? The tight end position was actually the deepest and most productive on the team last year.

Well if he is hurt, losing your start-to-be TE doesnt help your team. I think Romeo can get this franchise headed in the right direction. I still think this will be a rough year for them. This season kinda depends on their Defense.

KW2 is not very smart. He should be thinking of his team first. Maybe they should hire a team representative to follow him around. :) I hope he is alright.

The picture doesn't look too good. Hopefully he faired better than his bike.

I know that Winslow breached his contract like Jeff Kent two years ago, yet I hope that the Browns do not act in trying to recover cash. That would truly be classless. They don't need to recoup his signing bonus.

WINSLOW TO LOSE MORE THAN $9 MILLION?

Setting aside for now the question of whether Browns tight end Kellen Winslow should have been riding a motorcycle as he still rehabs from a broken leg that scuttled his 2004 rookie season (and prevented him from earning a big-money bonus payment by failing to participate in 30 percent of the team's offensive snaps), we've gotten a look-see at Winslow's contract, which indicates that he shouldn't have been riding a motorcycle at all. Ever. Period.

As a general matter, Winslow has breached Paragraph 3 of his contract, which prevents him from "engag[ing] in any activity other than football which may involve a significant risk of personal injury."

And this breach could have significant consequences. Winslow's motorcycling allows the team (if it so chooses) to recover $5 million of his initial signing bonus and the full $4.4125 million of his option bonus triggered at the outset of the 2005 league year, $2.4125 million of which won't actually be paid to Winslow until July 15.

So the total potential price tag on Winslow's deliberate failure to comply with the terms of his contract is a whopping $9.4125 million.

I would do it. Set an example, and get some money back to have more wiggle room. Besides, its not like Romeo drafted the guy.

i'll tell you why it'll hurt the team badly...because he was their 1st round pick in 04...because your first round picks should be the main building blocks of your franchise...they passed on several other players and even traded up a spot to get him in the draft...if you make a move like that to get a player that player better be worth it...and so far they've gotten just about nothing in return for their investment...just like their other 1st round picks...tim couch, courtney brown, gernald warren, and kevin winslow jr...what a waste of talent...i hope braylon edwards starts a positive trend for romeo

HE was part of the old browns, so anything he can add to the team now is just a bonus. Romeo swept out the trash from the old regime, and is giving KW2 a tryout period.

Do I want him lining up at TE for the browns (I am also a browns fan)? Yes, but if he ends up being another butch davis 1st round bust, it's just not suprising anymore.

What has Kellen Winslow done that he deserves to keep any of the money he was given? If this was a classy player, I wouldn't do it, but truth be told, he's just not. I have a problem with the Yankee's voiding Aaron Boone's contract when he could have lied to them and still be owed his money.

Why pay someone $9 mil to put on your hat at draft day?

I say make an example of him. He is still a rookie in my eyes. What has he done on the field to earn an exemption? Pffft! I think thus far he is all hype.

Winslow and his dad were charging prospective agents $5K just to for interviews before the draft. Given all the garbage both have spewed, I hope the Browns take everything they can. The Soldja won't be hurting too bad...his dad's got money.

Why in the world would that be classless? You can bet that if the Browns decided to breach the terms of the contract that Winslow and his agent would be screaming from the rooftops ....

Actually, having ridden sport bikes for years (including being hit by chicks immediately before finals on back to back semesters) and having made a business in college of buying wrecked sport bikes and repairing them, it really isn't too bad. It always looks ugly when a motorcycle goes down. I bought one motorcycle from a guy who wrecked it on the way home from the dealership. Was always funny IMO that it took an accident for many people to realize they are dangerous.

Given the sparse facts that he was in a parking lot with buddies and hit a curb at 35 mph, I would bet they were practicing wheelies or burnouts--showboat maneuvers I hate in general, but particularly stupid in his circumstances.

I heard Winslow was just learning how to ride his bike. He didn't have a license & had bought the GSX-R750 a few weeks earlier. A nice bike, but not one I'd select as a beginner.

Oh, and wheelies rock! :headbang: :)

states that KW2 is suffering from internal injuries and possibly a severe right knee injury. Sound a little more serious than I initially thought.

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news_room/news/arts/4241.0.html

Winslow has sustained some internal injuries, which are stable. There is also swelling in his right shoulder and knee. The extent of these injuries will not be known until further medical evaluation is completed after the swelling is reduced.

Winslow was that player that got there between different management teams, he never played enough under Davis, and the Pats loved TE's so why wouldn't cleveland, its gonna be a big hit if he can't go. didn't he remember what happened to Jason/Jay Williams 2nd overall pick in 2002 NBA draft. is just making his comeback from a motorcycle accident.

Sportscenter just had a report from the Cleveland area which said Winslow and his buddies had been seen shortly before this at an exhibition by an extreme riding team. I'll stick to my wheelie prediction.

What? He was drafted by davis, and played under him. He wasn't drafted and coached by some interem coach.

Seems like some people are their own worst enemy. If he breached his contract like that, he isn't very smart. We may never know if he was a better football player than motorcycle rider.

The swelling in the knee was considerable, sources said, with the Browns fearful Winslow may have torn his anterior cruciate ligament. The club also suspects Winslow may have suffered ligament or tendon damage to his shoulder, sources said.

In addition, sources said the Browns believe Winslow may have suffered a punctured lung and an injury to his kidney, but that neither had the club overly concerned. A source close to the club said the kidney was bruised.

In the latest ESPN update:

Winslow is still in the hospital and the local columnist who was reporting was gravely concerned Winslow may miss the season. That may be melodrama, but just passing it along.

Several off-duty cops were present at the motorcycle exhibition attended by Winslow and saw him depart, popping two wheelies on the way out. Reportedly one cop turned to another and commented "that's a million dollar wheelie."

If memory serves didn't Cleveland give up their 2nd round pick to move up in the 1st round to draft Winslow? Seems like it was to Detroit .... the pick ended up being Kevin Jones ....

I'm not sure what Detroit got in compensation, but they drafted Roy Williams that year. I believe they got Jones in the 2nd.

This is an excerpt from an article on the Browns web site ...

Davis said the decision to trade the team’s high second round pick (37th overall) to move up one slot and bring Winslow to Cleveland “signifies how important he was not only to 2004 but to the future of the Cleveland Browns.”

Sucks to think that they could've had both Roy Williams AND Kevin Jones instead of him in hindsight ....

They really didn't need a WR or a RB at that time, plus Kevin Jones got picked in the first round, so there's no reason to assume the browns would have been in that spot.

They dropped the ball by trading up to pick him, because every indication was that the lions weren't gonna take him anyway. But that's Butch Davis for you, and it's not suprising another one of his high round picks might bust out. It is a shame though

Ted Lehman is who they got with the Browns' 2nd round pick--he started all year and had 102 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF, 2 passes defensed and 1 Int.

Maybe. But just getting on a sports bike and popping wheelies at 35 mph seems far fetched to me. It takes awhile to learn how to pull that off. Here's an article from the Cleveland Plain Dealer on the incident & a map of the accident scene.

Well doesn't appear to involve wheelie (were the cops just throwing Winslow under the bus with their report on witnessing two wheelies?), gotta wonder what the Browns are going to do if he is out for the season again. I mean that is a lot of money out the door and on the cap for a guy who isn't playing.

I think they witnessed the wheelies @ a different event/location. From there Winslow & Co. went to the school (that was my understanding....... i didn't even have to google it ;)

That is what I understood as well. I just meant it looked like the actual accident didn't involve wheelies.

If I was a coach or general manager I would not allow my players to play catch in the backyard with their kids much less ride a motorcycle.

I wish Lance Berkman would have been thinking about this when he was playing flag football.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kellen Winslow Jr.'s internal injuries from a motorcycle accident are improving, but the Cleveland Browns are concerned with damage to his right knee, the team said Wednesday.

Winslow was injured in an accident that sent him flying over the handlebars of his newly purchased motorcycle Sunday night.

The Browns issued a statement saying his knee will continue to be re-evaluated but declined to provide any specifics.

The 21-year-old tight end remains hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic and a timetable for his release has not been determined.

The team also reported that Winslow is in good spirits. He has had a number of visitors over the last few days, including team president John Collins, general manager Phil Savage, coach Romeo Crennel and teammates.

Winslow's injuries are another setback for him and the struggling Browns. His rookie season ended when he broke his right leg during an onside kick in a Week 2 loss against Dallas. He lost a $5.3 million bonus last season because of the leg injury that dealt a severe blow to Cleveland's offense.

With his leg still on the mend, Winslow purchased a sport bike last month and was learning how to ride it in a parking lot when he hit a curb. He complained of chest pains after the crash.

Winslow's use of a motorcycle may have violated standard NFL player contract language that prohibits players from engaging in dangerous activities. If so, Cleveland could require him to pay back a $4.4 million signing bonus he received in March.

The Browns have declined to comment on his contract.

Winslow held out last year before signing a $40 million contract - a record for a tight end - as the No. 6 pick in the NFL draft.

They are getting closer to calling him done for the season:

BEREA - The joy ride Kellen Winslow Jr. took on his motorcycle last Sunday is expected to cost the Browns highly-touted tight end the 2005 season.
The Tribune Chronicle has learned that Winslow suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Surgery will be required, which means that Winslow will likely miss the upcoming season.

Timetables for recovering from ACL surgery vary depending on the severity of the tear and the individual. A common reference point is a minimum of eight to 10 months, but it's possible that Winslow might need a full year to recover from surgery.

The Browns issued a statement Wednesday afternoon confirming that Winslow was still hospitalized, but no details of the knee injury were given. The statement did say that concern remains with the right knee. It went on to say that the team wouldn't comment on any aspects of his contract.

Man, can the Browns ever catch a break?
