Longtime Browns analyst Tony Grossi, ESPN Cleveland, says Browns were going to draft Bridgewater and changed with seconds to go...

A source told me that the card prepared to be given to Commissioner Roger Goodell for the official announcement in Radio City Music Hall originally had Bridgewater’s name on it. Then with 10 seconds to go, a new card replaced it with the name of Johnny Manziel, as a result of owner Jimmy Haslam’s order.

Not a big surprise. It was somewhat known that Farmer preferred Bridgewater over the other QB's, but it was very well documented that Haslam had developed a serious crush on Manziel.

Only the Browns would spend a hundred grand to analyze the best QB prospect, have that same QB prospect fall to them in the draft, pick him...and then decide to get the sensational QB at the last second.
 
I heard a stat that blew me away today about the Browns QBs. Since they came back in the league in 1999, they have had 21 different quarterbacks! :yikes:
 
Say Watt you will, but that dumb ass owner of the Browns just set that franchise back again. I almost typed "Floaters" instead of "Browns" because of the very succinct GIF that was posted, ya know, the seat-N-lid GIF?

TB was the $100,000 choice, but no, let's spend more to back up.

That franchise is such a train wreck. How many head coach candidates turned them down this off season? 7? 8? What should be one of the most coveted jobs in sports and you have people saying "thanks but I'd rather eat my shoe."

Manziel's size or lack of it is a big issue to me. Too small for the nfl.

I have no doubt that Manziel is thinking the same thing about being stuck on the Browns, but he's obviously smart enough never to say it. His facial expression at the draft spoke volumes to me.

that's just for the fans; trying to make them feel good about him landing there. no doubt in my mind he'd have said the same thing to browns fans if he and manziel were drafted in opposite order.

No doubt. Cleveland is having major economic problems. Johnny was eyeing Houston, the he was hoping for Dallas, both places with plenty of spots for him and his entourage to hang out at. Now he has to figure out the best spot to eat pierogies at in Cleveland.

It would not be surprising. I mean Johnny came out of college after his sophomore year. As it is way too soon for him to come out.

Really if he came out after his junior year it would be acceptable. Plus the fact of him having red flags off the field as well. As hope that he has put them behind him.
 
I know what Johnny is. I know he's more likely to bust than not.

But I can't help but think Cleveland is the new Indy... if you know what I mean.

'cept he's playing in the AFC North - the new black & blue division - in addition to the four open air stadiums in the northeast. December games should be fun. Far cry from playing in Texas and in a powderpuff division like the AFC South (who only seems to have one good team out of four every year, not to mention half the stadiums are domes).

Johnny is going to be playing the Ravens defense twice a year, and even though the Steelers are down right now, they are always a franchise that seems to rebound (championship lineage probably inspires new players). And the Bengals are becoming a pretty solid team, so competition in that division alone is going to be tough.

Cleveland is Cleveland. They are where careers go to die. Johnny knows this, and that's why the long face at the draft.

I remember when the NFC East was a power. Now, they're fighting to see who can finish 9-7

I remember when Miami was the team to beat in the East.

I remember when the Raiders & Broncos fought for control of the AFC West, year in & year out.

I remember when the Chargers ruled the West with no challengers.

Winds are changing in the North, it's anybody's division right now. Cincy looks like the king, but not a very strong one. The Raven's defense is no more & the Steeler's defense is slowly making it's way to pasture as well.

They can turn it around this year, or Cleveland can smack them & nip that sht in the bud.

I don't know if Manziel is ready for the NFL, but I'm pretty sure the NFL ain't ready for Johnny Football. I mentioned in another thread, Bridgewater dissected college teams with superior intellect. Johnny straight up broke defenses down with his WTF (I know that didn't just happen) style of play.

I didn't "want" him on our team. But I'm going to have fun watching him play.


At least for a year or two anyway.
 
I agree TK. Things can certainly change from season to season, so there is always the possibility that Cleveland can pull itself out of the cellar.

I think Manziel will be fun to watch, as well, regardless if he succeeds for fails. As an NFL fan, I really look forward to seeing these young QBs develop.
 
Watching the Browns implode under Johnny Football is a little like rubbernecking at a wreck. You know you shouldn't but you just have to watch. :kitten:

The Texans haven't fielded as good a QB as Luck yet. When the Texans have "done something", then we can ***** and moan about guys who don't have Joe Montana's rings yet.
 
Herm Edwards isn't impressed with the Browns.

The Cleveland Browns are doing a "disservice" to Johnny Manziel by publicly announcing he's a backup, former NFL head coach Herm Edwards told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday.

Edwards said Browns officials are sending the wrong message to their team and fan base by labeling Manziel as Brian Hoyer's understudy before the quarterback competition has even begun.

"We don't know he's a backup. Who said he has to be the backup? If you draft a player to be a backup, why did you draft him?" Edwards asked. "You're drafting a guy because you think he's worthy of being drafted at that spot, but you're also drafting him because you think he can compete.

"If you're going to say, 'This guy's a backup,' — really? That doesn't make any sense to me. It just comes off bad. No one wants to hear that. If you're a fan, you're going, 'He's the backup? Why's he the backup?' "

I think he's taking this a bit out of context. Browns were unsuccessfully -- good luck with that -- trying to curb Manziel's attention-seeking ploys. He's a rookie QB... of course he's at the bottom of the depth chart before camps begin. The point was, "You're a rookie, behave live one. Get your head in the playbook and out of the spotlight." Nooooot goooonna haaappen, as GHWB used to say. :photos:

I think a better approach is to not name a starter and declare that the best man will win the job and the same applies to every position on the team - and leave it at that. JMO.

That's an impressive amount of butthurt.

Luck is average 6.8 yards per pass attempt, which is rather poor. To this point in his career, he's been a game manager on a team that throws a lot. He's pretty good at that role, but he's yet to flash anything close to the hype he had coming out.

I would take 2009-2011 Matt Schaub 100 times out of 100 over Andrew Luck 2012-2013 and it wouldn't be close. Zero hesitation.

"We're sitting there and they keep showing Johnny on T.V. and Johnny and I are texting and he shoots me a text and he says, 'I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to be there. I want to wreck this league together.'

Makes me think Johnny got desperate and sent the text. He didn't want to be the geno smith of this draft. His ego was taking a beating after every pick.
