BREAKING NEWS: George signed

Yeah for $3 mil for one year.

IRVING, Texas -- Eddie George has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cowboys for a base salary of $660,000 with a signing bonus of $1.54 million, sources have told ESPN's Ed Werder.

With incentives, the deal is worth up to $3 million and comes just two days after George was released by the Titans.

A news conference is expected Friday at 1 p.m. ET.

"He's going to get a check from Jerry [Jones] that will be worth more than the Titans were going to pay him for the whole year,'' said agent Lamont Smith, who represents George.

Truly don't understand how he is worth that much, but hey--hope it works out.

I believe Eddie is out of gas and this confirms it in my mind.

My theory was that if the Raiders signed him then Al Davis had used his "mojo" to verify that Eddie had something left in the tank. All old players who get the boot because their team thinks they aren't worth the money any more go to the Raiders IF they can still play. Al Davis (creepy though he may be) has a sort of 6th sense about this.

Jerry on the other hand has a different sort of "mojo". He's used it in the past to pluck pearls like Quincy Carter out of the draft for instance. His signing of Eddie George is going to be like that. George will have a better year than Emmitt did last season but it's nothing to get excited about. Eddie will not be a factor this season though it might put a few more butts in the seats.

I hate the cowgirls, but I can't really slam them for this move. They clearly needed an inside runner and they had cap room to spare. It's not like they could take it into next season. Parcells got a couple of decent seasons out of Ottis Anderson when he was on the scrap heap. Maybe he can get the same from Eddie.

The Titans continue to re-build the right way- Eddie George gets his wish once again showing why the NFL collective bargining agreement works- The Cowboys are trying to win NOW-

The Texans are much better organizied, built for the future and in view of these events only look stronger. :jam:

I think it's a good move. He's strong inside; I think Coach Parcells will put him in the right spot and he'll be great teaching the young guy they got. Might as well take a chance.

I knew this was going to happen two days ago and I look for him to be on the training table next to Carter by midseason if the blocking does not improve. Jerry has done an excellent job of keeping butts in the seats while quietly rebuilding and this move is just a 3 million dollar flak jacket to protect the future RB (Jones) while that line develops.

If you are under the salary cap in a particular year, wouldn't you just re-negoitate an existing player contract and bring some of his fuuture money forward to use up this year's salary cap (and create more cap room in the future)?

Yup--that has been done very successfully by a few teams within the last couple of years.

I'm sure they could do that to some extent. But according to theredzone.com the Girls are $9 mil under the cap. I doubt they have that much in future contracts they want to move up. A lot of younger players make just minimum salaries and there's nothing you can do with them. Some of the older guys you might not want around next year.

I read something a while back that teams have included not likely to be earned bonuses in player contracts in order to add cap room for the next year. When the player doesn't earn the bonus, the team is credited with that cap space for the next season. I guess the Girls could have done some of these types of manuevers, maybe they will. I just don't see them doing that much of it.

I feel sorry for eddy after playing for Bud, look at what Bud did to Earl. The Teetons are going to be in the cellar for a while, wonder how that will effect the arena in tennessee.

purily an insurence plan just in case julius jones fumbles the ball early on in the season...i have a feelin that if jones doesn't get the job done this season you know jerry jones will be looking for benson in next years draft

I am delighted that Eddie George is now a Cowboy and should really help the team. Now, hopefully Woodson recovers soon.

underline mine - Thank you for your post. I wasn't aware of the 'unearned bonus' angle.

I guess my point is that with the parity in the NFL, you have to use ever arrow in the quiver to try to get an advantage. I feel it is inexusable to allow substantial cap room from one year to lapse.

Good for Eddie, he got more than I ever thought he would. Frankly, I thought he stepped in it when he turned down the 1.5 with Dud. I think he helps the Cowpies.

ESPN (Sporstcenter & PTI) is reporting that there is a rift between Jones and Parcells on signing Eddie George. They allege that Parcells didn't want to sign Eddie. Has anyone seen any print media on this?

I don't know about ESPN but 610 reported he is exactly what Parcells wanted and the kind of back he covets.

Doesn't make any difference now I guess. He's signed!

He wasn't too helpful with the Titans the last 3 seasons. But I hope it helps more there.

I am feeling good about George's departure...his cycle with the Titans ended 1 year ago, and he wasn't the same after the Super Bowl appeareance.
