Brandon Allen, Arkansas QB

amazing80

Hall of Fame
I thought he deserved his own thread. Sounds like he checked in a tad small and smaller hands at the senior bowl, but he seems to be clicking with receivers and showing great velocity. His low turnover rate is impressive and his accuracy is a big plus. I hope he has a great off-season, I like the way he plays.

Watching him is fun. I don't understand why he isn't talked about more often. I get the talent argument, but playing with Gronk doesn't make Brady a scrub.

barely bother with the shrine/senior bowl anymore..seen way too many players who got raved reviews suck in the NFL and way too many players the experts panned become solid players...a dog and pony show

It may be a dog and pony show for people trying to hype names coming out of it, but it's clearly not for the players & coaches involved.

You can always watch it and judge for yourself.

Having watched it all I agree with the comments and evaluations being made about Allen's performance in Mobile this week.

catch the scouts watching? it's the same every year..barely watching looking bored...

agree it's a big deal for the kids but of little value for me in my evaluations

if your teams scouts are barely watching and looking board at these events you need to get new scouts

games matter day 2 of a dog and pony show doesn't they spend 4 years looking at these kids...
only real interest for me is the lower division kids

Don't most of the scouts leave before the game ?

I don't know their individual schedules off hand, but I do know there are days leading up to the game itself that involve practices and interviews and getting time with these kids to see how they prepare and how they approach their craft leading up to becoming a pro. If anyone wants to devalue that time knock yourself out, but I wouldn't if I were putting millions up to invest in these kids for my football team.

It's no secret that the practices are the main evaluation period.

It's no different than the Combine. Combine drills/workouts don't erase 4 years of tape, but putting a guy through drills in person gives you a front row view of how his skill set and athleticism translate to certain facets of the game.

A lot of schools use their schemes to hide player weaknesses.....there's no hiding anything out in those drills. If you struggle at something it will show. That's the whole point. Scouts want to see what the player can do, not what the player can do for School XYZ.

I am in the camp that the Combine is very important to player evaluations. One of the most important in the process. And not just because of the medicals and interviews, although those are extremely important. My argument is if the Combine wasn't that important teams would not go to the expense of flying all scouting personnel and coaches to Indy and put them up for a week. In addition you see every scout and every coach with their stop watch, clipboard and laptops sitting and watching, taking notes on every player and every drill, all day long for 4 long days....just MHO

love the short times, wingspan and arm length for olinemen
Greg Robinson ran a short time of either a guard or a 3rd/4th rd OT and has been a total bust for the Rams. The workouts/scores matter
also love the getting the measureables...use a number I call total height(vertical, measured height and arm length) for cb's and db's. Couple years ago Darqueze Dennard went ahead of Jason Verrett in the draft only because of measured height but Verrett had the higher total height...,

Which are? One site says he demonstrated great velocity and accuracy while another says he has a weak arm and was inconsistent all week. Not quite sure how two people can watch something and have such differing opinions lol especially on velocity and accuracy.

A majority of the comments agree with the latter.

ever been to a camp? 1st week defense dominates as the qb and skill players knock the rust off..takes a month or more before the timing between the skill players and the qb is down....2 days of practice working in a new city with new coaches, new plays with a bunch of total strangers

all I watch is how quickly the qb's go through their reads and how quickly they release the ball...real simple stuff.

Yea most scouts do that even at the combine. They look for things they didn't see on film like footwork and vision. If they see something in person that differs from what they saw they will go back and re-evaluate. Obviously, this is generalized as some scouts and teams use certain information more, but thats individualized.

Allen looked the best in the Senior Bowl game IMO. Progressed through his reads, protected the ball with smart throws, was accurate and showed he has plenty of zip on the ball for the next level. I am really starting to want this guy as our QB.

I guess Kubiak and the Texans FO disagree with us. Which lead to a 6-10 2010 season.

Allen is going to run into the same problems that Aaron Murray, Chase Daniel, Keenum, etc ran into. He's proven he has some talent but the measurements are not there. Short and small hands. Half the teams in the league will have him scratched off their board because of it. Another team will bring him on to develop as a backup but he's unlikely to get a legit shot at a starting job.

agree some teams will take off their board because of his hands....those things won't/shouldn't matter to teams playing indoors or in warm weather climates.

agree some teams playing outdoors or in cold climates will take him off their boards

almost identical hand size as Romo...but 8.5 makes him an outlier...like Russell Wilson being successful and being 5'10 5/8 tall

a quick check Allen had 5 fumbles over the last 3 seasons. Logic says his hand size isn't a problem.

Russel Wilson had over 10 inch hands....

I know and was also an outlier because of his height

Allen is an outlier because of his Romoesque hands
both Romo and Wilson proved the doubters wrong...

Rams drafted Greg Robinson #2 overall but had awful short times for a LT(an outlier) and has been a bust for the Rams so far....that Allen had so few fumbles in his career makes me feel better about the hand size but still it's an outlier

oh i thought the 8 you put after 5'10 was suppose to be his hand size

sorry old keyboard...meant 5'10 5/8.....most outliers fail...I really like Allen and his low numbers of fumbles makes me feel better about him but still an outlier

reminds me of that old story about Brett Favre and Ron Wolff...Wolff simply loved Favre and thought he was the best player in that draft and wanted him for the Jets.
Atlanta fed up with his drinking, sleeping through meetings and lack of effort at practice was happy to dump him to GB and Wolff. Wolff wanted him so badly he simply didn't care about the negative stuff.
have to say I might be a little like that towards Allen...know I'll be rooting for him no matter which team drafts him

"Favre quickly fell out of favor with Atlanta coach Jerry Glanville, allowing Wolf to swoop in for the steal once he took over football operations with the Packers.

"I had to get him out of Atlanta. ... I could not sober him up," Glanville explained in a 2010 radio interview. "I sent him to a city where at 9:00 at night the only thing that's open is Chili Joe's. ... And that's what made Brett Favre make a comeback was going to a town that closed down. If I would have traded him to New York, nobody to this day would have known who Brett Favre ever was."

Glanville never approved of the draft pick and once said it would take a plane crash to put Favre into a game."

My favorite Glanville quote about Farve is: He's trying to drink all the beer in the city of Atlanta.

lol....

he should of let Favre drink his beer AND played him....Farve wouldn't quit drinking till Glanville played him and Glanville wouldn't play him till he stopped drinking...

bet that's why Boston traded Babe Ruth
