Bombshell - NFL exec admits CTE connection

Don't see it going any other way due to evidence. NFL should have gotten ahead of this long ago and set up fund to assist players without lawsuits. PR would have been much better. Same with assisting former players with other disabling injuries.

In less than a generation you will not recognize the game of football as it is played today.

Like Gladiators in the Coliseum so to will be the NFL.

Actual label in my kid's football helmet:

But the NFL is still not sure about any connections between head collisions and brain trauma...

This "bombshell" is being overstated. He acknowledged what one study indicated. He did not make a general admission.

I can understand the sentiment, but I think there is too much money to be made with a league that is at the height of popularity (and showing no signs of slowing down).

I think what will happen is a full acceptance of the inherent dangers of a collision sport. Then, players will sign liability waivers when they join the league, and at the same time the NFL will most likely set up some kind of long term funding for both safety research and medical care for retired players. So the NFL covers itself on both ends by making players accept the personal liability of playing a sport that involves potential CTE, but also saving public face by taking measures to appear that they are helping those players in the long term.

I do think this will eventually trickle down to the little league levels and kids won't be allowed to play until a certain age. And after watching several seasons of Friday Night Tykes, as well as being involved with youth sports, I'm not necessarily against it when you fully realize how many unqualified father coaches are teaching bad technique, incorrect fundamentals, and even teaching head hunting attitudes because they are living vicariously through their kids' sports. Football was never a kid's game like baseball and basketball. If you study the history of the sport, it was always a man's game. There is no wrong in admitting that causing brain trauma in adolescents that are still maturing might not be the best thing for their long term health.

Nothing lasts forever. But, I do not see the NFL dying out within my lifetime (short of a complete societal collapse due to a variety of potential factors, and then all bets are off the table for everything).

IMHO I think it's the reverse. Mothers are already refusing to allow their children to play tackle football. This is a trckle up effect. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in public schools. Football is declining. We're already seeing a few schools eliminating football from their athletic programs.

Yeah, this is true. It's hard to ignore the numbers and current trends.
