"It's something to experience" Also when asked his plans post bowl interview, just cut to chase letting everybody know his intentions to come out in no nonsense terms (no need for branding here) just a young man ready to accept responsibility & be accountable for his own actions.

2. Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois, 6022 219

2nd team Senior Bowl & MVP of Shriner Game. Flashes ability to be a starter in the NFL with work from Bill O'Brian & staff. Passed for 5050 yards, 53 TD's, completing 66% & throwing only 9 picks in 568 attempts. Keenum will remain starter until he is ready to take over. Schaub should be cap casualty. Expect if Texans cannot trade down then take QB they could very well be fine taking Clowney but would have to grab Jimmy here.

3. Jimmie Ward, Safety/CB, Northern Illinois, 5013 191

Had great week of practice & looks like a playmaking nickle to me an area which must be upgraded. He can also filter down to either safety position. A player Texans need in lineup every down. Hoping for similar role to that of Tyrann Mathieu to improve in new passer friendly era.

4. Joel Bitonio, OT/OG, Nevada, 6040 307

Started LT & stalemated Anthony Barr when they faced each other. Had impressive week of practice & really helped his stock. If tackle situation resolved if Brennan returns healthy, Bitonio can also play LG & compete with Quessenberry giving Texans infusion of much needed young talent/depth in revamped Offensive Line.

5a. Caraun Reid, Nose Tackle, Princeton, 6021 301

Very smart, yet aggressive penetrating nose who compliments Earl Mitchell (to be resigned by Texans). Had a coming out party @ Senior Bowl (two sacks) still developing but carry's weight very well like BJ Raji (little worried if he blows up his forty @ combine could go much higher based off physical measurable).

5b. (Supplemental selection based off expected free agency losses) Brent Urban, DE, Virginia, 6066 298

Withdrew from practice after tweaking his ankle, I suspect from trying to battle teammate Moses Morgan who simply dominated him (as well as others). Raw but possess ideal size for a 3-4 end, doubt he lasts this long in actual draft just based off Senior Bowl week & certainly worth the pick despite injury if available.

6. Christian Kirksey, LB, Iowa, 6016 234

Can pass rush from outside or stunt to inside, fearless attitude with strong work ethic who expect from an Iowa linebacker. Better size than Borland who I also really like but am unwilling to spend a higher pick needed over interior trench prospects posted here (2nd on North roster in tackles to only Borland). While Kirksey doesn't have the production or big name recognition he is an excellent developmental LB for Vrabel & Texans.

7. Crockett Gillmore, TE, Colorado State 6060 253

Late addition to Senior Bowl, led South in receptions with 5 for 61 yards & a TD. Had 47 receptions for 577 yards & 2 TD's. O'Brian likes to use big TE's & would be nice addition to last years 6th rd. selection Ryan Griffen. Would like to see Owen Daniels return, but could leave via free agency causing even more pressing need.

Well its a fairly small sample size, which offers a glimpse into the overall depth of this years class with record number of underclassman entering pushing down this Senior Class to reachable heights. Great year to have 1st pick in every round. Love to grab Bridgewater but if Texans don't there are other options to improve roster, including Clowney.

I'm not saying Jimmy Garoppolo is going to be the next Aaron Rodgers but O'Brian could mold him into a serviceable starter. Then put pieces around him while filling in holes on defense. thanks

1. Not a fan of Clowney. I know there are some people who think Clowney may be a once in a decade talent, but I personally see a very gifted athlete who doesn't have a strong work ethic. In the NFL you have to bust your butt every OTA, every practice, every film session, every play in order to become a superstar. I just don't see it with Clowney. I see a guy who likes but does not love to be a football player.

The other problem with Clowney is he plays a position which can become neutralized. Last year JJ Watt had perhaps the greatest season a defensive player has ever had, yet even he could not save the Texans. This year, Watt had another magnificent year and the Texans still managed to win only 2 games. Some people say that if you put Clowney next to Watt(and he actually pans out) that you have an unstoppable DL. Remind you of anyone? Reminds me a lot of Detroit. They drafted Fairley and Anash to join with Suh. But, as fearsome as their DL may be, their success and failures rest on the arm of Matthew Stafford. That's why I advocate the QB as the first overall selection.

2. I like the selection. Good arm, accuracy, and most importantly a quick release. A fast release can greatly reduce the effect an opposing DL or sack master can have. The only concern I have is that he goes in the first. I assume Bridgewater, Manziel, and Bortles go in the top 10. But after that, who would be QB #4? Carr? He looked disastrous against a solid, but unspectacular USC D in his bowl game. Boyd? Looked too up and down this year. Mettenberger? Had one very good year. Is he too statuesque and immobile for today's NFL? McCarron? Is he a game manager or can he be a franchise QB? I think its possible Garrapolo climbs into the mid to late first round and is the 4th QB off the board.

3. Agreed. In a passer friendly league DB playmakers are a must. McCain was horrendous and sadly Brandon Harris hasn't pushed him out yet. Perhaps he never will. Ward would be a great selection.

4. Bitonio is a great athlete. I would prefer to solve RT spot earlier, but I really like your second and 3rd round picks. Bitonio is a fantastic selection here. Bitonio reminds me of Quiz, a tough nosed OL who does a good job wherever you put him on the line.

5a. While I like the pick, I disagree with position. I don't see him as a NT, but rather a 3-4 DE. Like Mitchell(if resigned), I think utilizing that size of speed and power as a NT would give him more opportunities to cause havoc than as an undersized traditional NT.

5b. Sure. Can't have enough DEs. Good size, but I agree, I doubt he lasts into the late 5th. Personally I have him as a 3rd, but a man can dream, right?!

6. I am a big fan of Borland. I actually was mocking him in my 2013 mock drafts. That said, he has shot up way too much. While I like Kirksey, I have not seen enough film on him. I will be especially interested in his 3 cone times. I have no doubt he can learn technique. But, 3 cone drill speed cannot be taught. If he has the speed and needs development, then absolutely. If he doesn't have the 3 cone drill speed: pass. The Texans have enough guys with heart but little athleticism. They need more guys with speed and heart.

7. BL: You do know that Kubes is no longer the coach here and there are no more CSU TEs that must be mocked anymore, right?! JK, buddy!!! In all seriousness, I have a feeling Baltimore takes him in the late 5th. If he lasts this long, AWESOME!!!

Just one more thing, nobody is going to kill the Texans for taking Clowney, just like the Mario pick, he is worthy of serious consideration #1 overall. He is more disruptive & a better fit @ OLB as well, IMO. Not concerned about record as reflection of Watt, more like on Kubiak & his playbook/QB.

2. Yeah I have to admit if Texans bypass taking QB early then they must strike with first pick of second round, no reservations & Jimmy looks like he would fit the bill. If he is off the board then take bpa, would love Moses here then maybe Murray in 3rd (not applicable in Senior Bowl because injured). Really disappointed in Boyd, Mettenberger lacks pocket awareness plus coming off acl, McCarron is recovering from some mysterious hand injury & couldn't participate in his home (give me a break), so you could be tempted to move up in order to secure Garopplol.

Jimmie Ward effectively replaces Glover Quin & wipes out memory of Ed Reed, not to mention the primary player he would be replacing Brice McCain who I've supported but clearly not the same cover corner/nickle he was before injured, very poor set of circumstances, could be a medical evaluation but expect him to move on via free agency.

4. Selected Bitonio because he is clearly in the Patriot mold of blue collar, no nonsense offensive linemen, technically sound & just take care of their assignments. Nothing flashy here sorry, but definitely a stop gap & type of player Texans need to have some consistency from their blind side protectors or heck OL in general.

5. Suppose scheme diverse rather than agree to disagree, they switch around so much rather than prototypical 3 man fronts but see no reason why he couldn't as he develops into his frame. Seems natural & instinctive which is why I projected him to be a blue collar version of BJ who I just fell for when he came out of BC. I also find it reassuring when your highest IQ per position is the OL, always put stock into that, so to combat that you need some smart disruptive DL to nullify.

5. Remember now this mock is based off the Senior Bowl & Urban was mauled & left practice never to return & play the game. I'm thinking in his case it does hurt his stock somewhat & Texans could add another big developmental DE because of it. If not?

6. I would have no problem moving Kirksey up to 5th, though not much change pick wise. Just another great Iowa LB prospect. See him more as edge rusher, special teams guy but just never know he has pedigree & could surprise if kicked inside too.

7. Can't seem to keep enough healthy TE's around, such targets & take physical abuse constantly. I get the Kubes connection & consciously ignored it but thanks for bringing it up. It does seem like an above average class & Texans have depth problems plus free agency concerns with Garrett Graham plus big bucks owed to Daniels. Would expect move possibly earlier, but nobody struck me other than Gillmore in the Senior Bowl.

Did you get a chance to see Jimmie Ward play or practice too? He would really help secondary could play either Safety position or Nickle. He had 7 picks last year & 95 tackles. Last three years he started had 300 tackles. I believe he is a more sound football player than DJ Swearinger.

I hear you. Yes:he definitely has talent and size. But, I just don't see heart. I am wary of investing a high draft pick in a guy who doesn't eat, sleep, and dream football.

In my mind, JG should be in that next group of QBs taken. Question is, how far does he drop. Let's pretend the Texans take Bridgewater, Browns grab Manziel, and Raiders opt for Bortles. That could mean 3 QBs taken in the top 5. Even if one of them gets past Oakland, Minnesota at 8 could take the last of the three. Tennessee at 11, Arizona at 20, KC at 23 are at lest three possible spots he could wind up. I have a feeling in a QB driven league, it will be tough for the Texans to trade back up and get him.

I was going to say I think the Texans are going to play more of a man style of OL, until I saw the new OL hire. From what I understand he used more ZBS assignments than man when he was in Atlanta.

That is true. If he could put on some weight an still be disruptive, he could become a poor man's Vince Wilfork.

I get what you are saying. I actually think D players are going to start to become undervalued as the NFL presses more towards a passing league. The superhigh end guys like a Wilfork will go in the first but lesser good players will drop as the proliferation of passing makes it look like defenses have become somewhat neutered. May not happen this draft, but i could see it happening down the line.

Its is a good class for TEs and I fully expect 1 in the draft and 1 as an UDFA.

On a side note, one thing that irks me is the talent that has been cut. Chris Jones, the 6th rounder in last year's draft, gets cut in preseason and goes on a to start and play a big role in the Patriot DL. Willie Jefferson gets cut and then goes on to make some big plays for the Chiefs. Drafting the players is one thing, developing them is another. I hope that is an area that will be addressed by the new regime.

Better size than Borland who I also really like but am unwilling to spend a higher pick needed over interior trench prospects posted here (2nd on North roster in tackles to only Borland). While Kirksey doesn't have the production or big name recognition he is an excellent developmental LB for Vrabel & Texans.

7. Crockett Gillmore, TE, Colorado State 6060 253

Late addition to Senior Bowl, led South in receptions with 5 for 61 yards & a TD. Had 47 receptions for 577 yards & 2 TD's. O'Brian likes to use big TE's & would be nice addition to last years 6th rd. selection Ryan Griffen. Would like to see Owen Daniels return, but could leave via free agency causing even more pressing need.

Thanks Kiwi & others, made correction to Jimmie Ward's height. Hands 9 1/2" arm length 31 1/2" & wingspan impressive 77 1/8". The #1 rated CB coming in Keith McGill, Utah is your prototypical Seawhawk corner, but expect him to go mid to late 2nd. He stands 6030 weighs 214 with 10 1/4" hands, 33" arms & 80 7/8" wingspan. Richard Sherman is 6025, weighed 195, hand size 9 3/4, arm length of 32" However he timed well & just looked quicker in & out of his breaks. Sherman @ the time was still raw & converted WR. Checking Keith's official weight, 205, he added 10 pounds but may have just been a little out of football shape, based off his struggles & cramps in practice. Certainly another DB to keep an eye on but he is more of a cover two/boundary type as opposed to safety/nickle like Jimmie Ward. I guess we could use both but could only be one or the other.

I hear you. Yes:he definitely has talent and size. But, I just don't see heart. I am wary of investing a high draft pick in a guy who doesn't eat, sleep, and dream football.

Tough position to defend. I really do believe he is easily distracted & soaking up a little too much of the College Atmosphere. I'm sure he has been put on a pedestal from day one but when challenged he responds positively, confidently & with a lot of heart/energy. He is actually a very safe, pro ready prospect with immense upside playing a premium position.

In my mind, JG should be in that next group of QBs taken. Question is, how far does he drop. Let's pretend the Texans take Bridgewater, Browns grab Manziel, and Raiders opt for Bortles. That could mean 3 QBs taken in the top 5. Even if one of them gets past Oakland, Minnesota at 8 could take the last of the three. Tennessee at 11, Arizona at 20, KC at 23 are at lest three possible spots he could wind up. I have a feeling in a QB driven league, it will be tough for the Texans to trade back up and get him.

That supposition is out the window because Texans selected Clowney not Bridgewater, thus one less QB & not such a vacuum, but I understand your point, I just don't grade him out as a first round QB.

I was going to say I think the Texans are going to play more of a man style of OL, until I saw the new OL hire. From what I understand he used more ZBS assignments than man when he was in Atlanta.

I wan't really shooting for that, more like a solid rotational developmental nose who could grow into the position but succeeds more with his brain than his brawn.

I get what you are saying. I actually think D players are going to start to become undervalued as the NFL presses more towards a passing league. The superhigh end guys like a Wilfork will go in the first but lesser good players will drop as the proliferation of passing makes it look like defenses have become somewhat neutered. May not happen this draft, but i could see it happening down the line.

This is exactly right & reason why its so important not to forget the secondary. Very difficult positions to hit, CB/S, but there importance will be on display more every year, as NFL has become a passing league. This is reason why I dropped 5 tech lower, first, however I had to identify a CB/S Texan worthy, then slip in Urban who has plus size/length for position to develop.

If Kirksey is as you say, then I am fully on board. Gotta have more guys who LOVE the game and have the talent to boot.

Agreed. I think some simple trade up may be in order to secure his services.

Its is a good class for TEs and I fully expect 1 in the draft and 1 as an UDFA.

Would be nice to get a big, athletic, receiving one like Gillmore, then blocking TE via free agency.

On a side note, one thing that irks me is the talent that has been cut. Chris Jones, the 6th rounder in last year's draft, gets cut in preseason and goes on a to start and play a big role in the Patriot DL. Willie Jefferson gets cut and then goes on to make some big plays for the Chiefs. Drafting the players is one thing, developing them is another. I hope that is an area that will be addressed by the new regime.

Once again agreed, & probably why, at least initially, Rick Smith retained his role within this organization, now lets see if he can weasel out of a few his own work/contracts to get the Texans well under the cap?

Thanks again. Clowney made this draft by showing enough interest to sell himself to coaches/gm's just showing up. Important too that Bill O'Brian got a chance to watch Garoppolo practice all week in the flesh. After that was probably just a beerlover free for all, who knows? There are so many great underclassman prospects added to the mix surely Texans will land at least a couple. But it was fun & challenging exercise. Next up the Combine.

Here I am again jumping ahead of the curve but Jimmie Ward just jumped out to me in this Senior Bowl. Really fascinating how some prospects seemingly fall through the cracks. This is why an event like Senior Bowl is so important to these players. He is almost exactly the same player as Chris Harris, CB Denver, (currently injured) who had developed into not just a starter for Broncos but their nickle corner (role I'm projecting Jimmie would fill for Texans) in just three years after being undrafted out of Kansas. 5100 190 out of Bixby Oklahoma, he worked out really well, 40 yard dash: 4.41 avg.; 20 yard dash: 2.63; 10 yard dash: 1.59; 225 bench reps: 14; Vertical: 36"; Broad Jump: 10'1"; Shuttle: 4.2; 3-cone: 7.01. just FYI-

When it comes to draft prospects, perhaps no one is more informed than NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.
Mayock watches countless hours of tape, studying as many prospects as he can to best analyze the hundreds of selections that take place on draft day.
But if you asked him about Chris Harris leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft, Mayock disappointingly admits he wouldn’t have much to offer.
“I'm mad at myself,” Mayock said. “He was way off radar screens. Matter of fact, he wasn't invited to the combine. I did no tape work on the kid whatsoever because he was not listed as a draftable player.”

Just some additional comments from national media outlets to add fuel to fire

Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo has jumped squarely on the radar of every NFL executive with his solid play over the past two weeks. He killed at the East-West Shrine Game and continued to impress with his consistent play during practices this week. Garoppolo showed exceptional footwork making throws inside the pocket, while also displaying remarkable athleticism and body control tossing the ball on the move. In addition, Garoppolo has made quick, decisive reads with the ball, showing a compact delivery and quick release. Although Garoppolo's play won't vault him into consideration as a franchise quarterback, there are several teams that will view him as an intriguing developmental prospect with starting potential based on his strong showing in Mobile.

Colorado State TE Crockett Gillmore was a late addition to the Senior Bowl roster, but he certainly boosted his draft stock with his standout performance on Saturday. The Rams' star had five catches for 61 yards and a score, displaying strong hands and underrated route skills. He complemented his impressive performance as a pass catcher with a strong showing as a blocker on the edge. He repeatedly sealed the corner on perimeter runs and effectively neutralized his assigned defender on power plays between the tackles. Of course, scouts expected Gillmore to be a stout blocker at the point of attack based on his solid performance during the regular season, but doing it against the top players in the country will enhance his value in the minds of coaches searching for a traditional tight end in the draft.

Princeton DT Caraun Reid had a solid overall week of practice, but his standout performance in the Senior Bowl will earn him a hard look from scouts looking for an interior defender with quickness and rush skills. The 6-foot-2, 270-pound defender racked up a pair of sacks on back-to-back plays that showcased his speed, burst and hand skills. Reid defeated Baylor's Cyril Richardson using a quick arm over at the line of scrimmage to notch a sack. He followed it with a butt-and-jerk maneuver on the subsequent play that showcased his sneaky strength and power on the inside. As more teams utilize quick interior defenders on nickel and sub packages, Reid could be viewed as an enticing option based on his solid play in the game.

Not mentioned in this article was Jimmie Ward, easily had the better week but lacks the size these two possess as mentioned in ealier post about McGill.

Nebraska CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste and Utah CB Keith McGill entered the week viewed as two of the most intriguing cornerback prospects in the draft based on their physically imposing frames. The duo didn't disappoint scouts in attendance with their play, as each showed better than anticipated cover skills and awareness in the Senior Bowl. Jean-Baptiste made a few plays on the ball utilizing "off" technique, which is surprising considering his size suggests he would be better served to play press coverage at the line of scrimmage. McGill also displayed solid cover skills on the perimeter. He quickly exploded out of his pedal to record a knockdown in the third quarter, showcasing his short area burst and anticipation. McGill later added a game-clinching interception in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. With Jean-Baptiste and McGill flashing adequate cover skills in space, teams looking for big, athletic corners with movement skills will take a long, hard look at the duo leading up to the draft.

But yes, I feel that he could make a Case for Keenum to succeed or TJ, who gets no love around here while being smart and drafting franchise QB to develop, tailor made for his system. Seems like reasonable speculation, with a much & I mean much better defense they could easily have a winning record in 2014. Of course I'm a big fan of Bridgewater too, so if they develop him on the run & just tweak the defense I could certainly live with that, but Texans need to add a premium pass rusher to compliment Watt, plus improve secondary by replacing nickle. Recently that has certainly been the case. Playoff teams:

2013: 2 FA (Brees, Manning), 1 trade (Smith)
2012: 1 FA (Manning), 1 trade (Schaub)
2011: 1 FA (Brees), 1 trade (Schaub)

So 2 FAs, both with exceptional circumstances for being free agents and injury concerns and Schaub who I many would say goes into the not good enough except for noise category.

I'm not in love with TB/JM, I don't want the Texans to draft either at 1-1. In a strong draft I don't think either should go in the top 10. I'm still working through non-QB 1st rounders, so I can't say how strong this draft is just yet.

But right now, I don't see either as 1-1 type QBs on their own.

That said, I definitely believe had Schaub not gone loopy on us we'd have been a strong contender in 2013's play-offs.

But I believe all teams have "holes" Kaepernick, Manning, Wilson, & Brady overcame theirs, a better QB would help us overcome ours.

Your reasoning is sound, I don't have a problem with that. I just don't feel the same way. If OB thinks like you do & we take him, or Manziel/Bortles 1-1, I'll get behind it like I've always done.
