SS Marlon McCree, Carolina: A five-year journeyman, McCree played in the past for Jacksonville and Houston, and was a part-time starter, but arguably is doing his best work this season. McCree took over the strong safety spot for first-round pick Thomas Davis only two games into the season, after the rookie struggled mightily in coverage. The result: A much more stable Panthers secondary and a veteran interior defender who has the same physical mind-set as the rest of the starters in the Carolina secondary. McCree has 69 tackles, three interceptions and six passes defensed.
Kenny Wright, Jaguars: Won a three-way battle for the starting job opposite star left cornerback Rashean Mathis and has played well for the NFL's No. 4-rated pass defense. Wright had been both a starter and nickel corner in incarnations with the Vikings and Texans, but has stepped up in his full-time role, and has 49 tackles, one interception and six passes defensed.
