Baron is better than Pace!

someone had to start the thread. The biggest benefit is that he is younger so he can be here a while and we will keep our 2 3rd round picks. Sharper is still trade bait. Baron will come alot cheaper than Pace too, maybe gives us money to go after Plaxico Burress or something.

At this point in time, it looks like our cards are on the table...and we'll be picking LT with our #13.

Barron will be better than Pace only after he retires.

I'd take DD over Earl Campbell right now. Campbell needs a cane to walk.

I don't think so. Barron may not be rated any higher than other players at 13. Casserly has already stated that he doesn't like the O-line prospects at the top of the draft and pursuing Pace may just give further proof. He did say that this is a deep draft at the second level player however.

I Seriously doubt we pick a LT with the 13th. This Pace was a once in a million chance...and we had to go for it.

Now we go back to drafting best player available. And Barron is NOT worth a 13th pick. The tackles this year just arent that talented. Gallery didnt even come in last year and light it up.

I bet we go with a WR.

Thats like saying Dom Davis is better than Earl Campbell.

I dont totally agree with that. PACE IS OVERRATED, seriously i will be sooo pissed if we get give up any 1st rounders for pace. build through the draft youngin, build through the draft...

Pace is probably one of the top-10 players in the entire NFL. He isn't overrated.

I don't think Barron is much better than Wand right now. If Wand is a project, Barron would be as well. Rookie tackles are often non-factors.

True, but if Barron is there...and clearly the BPA, you still got to take him.

the only reason i say us going after Baron over Pace is that we will have more picks and more money to improve the team elsewhere. its better for the overall team. although I wanted pace, now that we are not getting him i have to justify it.

Thats just it... Barron wont be the best player available at 13. Now, if we stray from the best player available strategy... and just go with the we need a tackle strategey... then Barron has a chance.

Otherwise its BPA as Casserly has stated several times.

Yes, and I agree with you guys on this. I personally do not want us to take a tackle with our first...I think our #2 reciever position is a better filler with the top pick.
But you never know come draft day what Casserly & company will do. And its obvious now that we were looking at left tackle for an upgrade.

I say #2 WR as well. Although I just heard Barron had a huge workout at pro day. We will see...

We have given up 161 sacks over 3 years. Improving the OL was ALWAYS obvious to me.

:woot Barron will never be as good as Pace . Barron is not as powerful or agile as Pace . Thats why Pace was a 1st pick of the draft and Baron is middle of the 1st round .

Although most of the D was good, the obvious choice in the 1st round would be DJ, but also id rather see one of the top CB's join the team before id like another receiver....what would CC do if Pac Man, Antrel Rolle, and Mike Williams are left on the board

Williams. Immediate impact trumping decision.

Gonna have to join in to the disagreement on this. Just an apples and oranges deal--the opportunity to get a guy that would be an upgrade over all but 1-2 guys at his position in the NFL or getting a decent draft prospect. Back to my prediction of the same starting OL with a draft pick competing to take over an inside spot sometime during the season. Let's hope Wand improves from starting year 1-2 as Pitts did--basically one third the sacks--will anyone be complaining about all of this if he only gives up 4-4.5 sacks next year?

I would go Mike Williams. He will create those crazy mismatches, and get the ball in the endzone.

trade down two spots.

Some times NFL OL stay healthy and play and play well until they are 40, case in point is Bruce Mathews of the Oilers/Titans. Then there's the guard the Cowboys just shelled out a 9 mill signing bonus for - he aggravated a disc
running on a treadmill and will be having surgery: good chance it's related to playing 10 years in the NFL. I could have maybe seen shelling out two firsts for OP if he were 25, but not when he's nearing 30. This way, the guys we
use our next 2 first rounds on will be 23 or 24.
********************
Baron ran a 4.8 something 40 in his Pro Day - let's play him @ TE.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/analysis/individual_workouts#fsu

Barron was 6-7½ and 320 pounds at the combine, but he weighed in at 312 here. On the fast track, he ran 4.86 and 4.83 in the 40, which is remarkable for a guy his size. He added a 38-inch vertical jump, a 4.62 short shuttle and he did not do the cone drill.

Somebody know how Pace ran at the 40 yards ???

Not many people are worried about Barron's speed. They are more worried about his ability to handle run blocking and a bull rush.

That's an awesome vertical jump but I'd rather see his squat and bench reps. I'm a Barron fan but Vinny's right. Can he handle the Bull Rush and how good is his run blocking fundamentals?

I think we might need to make a trade package with Wand, Sharper, and possibly Bradford or Gaffney to get a late 1st round pick (maybe Pittsburgh-30 or Philly-31 since they need more depth at all 3 of those positions). This would free up cap room and also give us a chance to use our 13 for a WR or DB and use the 30 or 31 on a LT.

By the time Wand comes into his own, it will be time to resign him and he may ask for an arm-and-a-leg. Barron is as good as Wand now and we could sign him to 5-6 years at a decent price since it would be in the late 1st round.

I'm not all for drafting OL at #13; I think we should take BPA at #13 and the best OG/C prospect at #47 if we don't trade down into the high 1st round to get someone like Baas.

I feel the weakness in the line is center.
I'd rather trade down... and with the top two picks we have get a center and a corner (to groom)

Look for us to either trade up to get DJ or stay with our pick and get the D-Rob of this draft in Carlos Rogers(who is bigger than D-Rob) Then in the second we will address the line if there is a good prospect available or we will go after Daryl Blackstock if he is there, but most likely the line. In the third round look for us to take Vincent Jackson and Jerome Mathis. Mathis will be our deep threat and Jackson will play the slot opposite Gaff and be a future big-timer as a tight end.

"Johnson was 6-3 7/8 and 296 pounds, and he ran his 40s in 4.90 and 4.95. He had a 34-inch vertical, an 8-foot-7 long jump, a 4.41 short shuttle, a 7.50 cone drill and 23 strength reps. "
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Jesus that must have been a fast track Baron ran on because Travis Johnson, the 296 lb FSU DT, ran a 4.9 flat 40 ! Or maybe FSU just had some real fast timers today.

I think this argument is a moot point, I doubt Barron is still available at #13

I may be wrong, but I doubt it...
I agree with you. If Barron's shoulder checked out at the combine, I can't see Titans, Lions, & Chargers all passing on Barron. Don't count out the Browns if they trade down from #3. That was a freakish workout Alex put on today and let's face it, NFL scouts love freaks.

There are other good tackles that can be found in this draft. The Texans may or may not take a tackle in the 1st round, just as they may or may not go after a big free agent. Who knows what's really happening when Charley starts blowing smoke? But currently, the Texans have Chad Beasley & Garrick Jones listed as the backup tackles. They will draft an offensive tackle at some point in the draft.

Perhaps a trade down and pick up someone like Brown? Then again, there isn't much trade bait in this draft and you don't want to reach. Should be an interesting draft.

Plaxico wants too much money.. Barron might not come cheaper but he is unproven.... The best bet is Pace. I bet Carr would agree with me. We would have best OL in leauge... and automatic spot in the playoffs for us. Thats the goal here

I have heard a report that the trade is off. The texans arent willing to give up 2 1st rounders. He said he might resign with Rams

Barron is a really good prospect...I remember watching FSU play Virginia early in the season and he pretty much owned them...Nobody even got close to Sexton, if memory serves me correct...

That said, if you have the opportunity to take a proven star instead of an unproven that will take a year or two to develop, of course you take the proven fact...

The point may be moot though, since Barron will be taken in the top 10 and Pace will likely still be on the Rams next year...
