BADBOY's post Bowls mock (no trades)

badboy

Hall of Fame
I just can't see Houston not being involved in some trade down but this mock does not offer any. IMO, there are only two players offering minimal risks, C J Mosley and Sammy Watkins but the latter offers a higher ceiling and turns 21 June 14th.

1. WR Watkins 6'0 200(combine will clarify) 4.47 and follows BPA formula that many like. WR may not be the solid corps we think outside of AJ and Hopkins. Watkins said after teammate Bernard left that he would do better and he did. Great hips & vert. that allows him to go up and take ball away from D. He is perfect slot (shallow) but can play Y (deep); great soft hands catching 101/1464 14.5 avg. Sets up blockers well & weaves through D with controlled bursts of speed. Known as adequate blocker for size & gets job done.

2. OT Antonio Richardson 6'6" 327 future LT that could be a franchise type starts day one at RT. If B Williams can play one year after microfracture knee surgery, I move him to swing allowing him less reps and more time. I'm also not giving up on Newton who should finally be 100% by TC & could get some time at OG over Ben Jones who needs to be the center soon rather than later. If Newton does not impress in TC, he could be a cap cut. Q starts at LG.

3. QB Tajh Boyd 6'.06 222 (Senior Bowl measurements) I am loyal to quys I follow (McCarron took me to bowl to give up)but I see no reason to give up on the "other TB". Not only do I put him behind a stout OL, but give him his 2012 (Hopkins) & his 2013 (Watkins) go to guy increasing his comfort level in NFL. Oh, yeah some guy called AJ had a pretty good 2013 with Keenum.

4. DE Kareem Martin 6'6" 265 (played at 272)arms 34 3/8 replaces A. Smith. 11.5 sacks 82 Ts came on strong end of season with 6 sacks last 4 games.

5. OLB/ILB Devon Kennard 6'3" 257 2009 freshman strong side ILB then in 2010 to MLB 13 games 72 Ts 7 for loss 2 sacks. 2011 to DE. 2012 torn chest muscle lost year. 2013 OLB started 13 games 60Ts 13.5 TFLs 9 sacks 10 QB hits & 4 pass deflections. 5-2 scheme. Team captain. Born 6-24-1991 highest GPA on team & working on Masters. One of nine semi finalists for Ronnie Lott Award.

5. (comp) NT Ryan Carrethers 6'1 330 I found this guy and have pushed him for long time & still he gets no national love. Advantage Texans!

6. TE/FB Joe Don Duncan 6'3" 267 better WR than blocker, only Division 2 guy invited to both Shriner and Senior Bowl. Declined the first & then hurt foot in practice & did not get on field for Sr. Bowl. 2011: 64/949 9 TDs 2012: missed due to loose cartilage being cleaned 2013: 71/1,045 14.72 avg 13 TDs. *note he was his teams featured receiver.

7. CB Phillip Gaines 6' 5/8" 185 36 T 4 INTs don't know why this Rice corner is not getting more attention. A real games that should have been allowed to mirror the opponent's best WR. A steal at this spot.

Only regret is not drafting a RB as I'm concerned about Foster. The only RB I liked was Hyde who takes a 2nd and can't see that but may change as Arian's health picture clarifies.

JMO, don't kill the messenger.

1. Watkins, I love the player and really wish he could be a Texan, but I just don't see that pick as best use of our #1. We've got much bigger needs than WR.
2. Richardson, I'm still unsure about this guy, whether or not he possesses enough athleticism for NFL level OT. I think he's got potential but also has alot of work to do. I'd take him in the 3rd, but there's got to be better value to be had in the 2nd, someone with 1st round talent will fall.
3. Boyd, NO.
4. Martin, I like this guy and love his height, arm length, and athleticism at DE, I do worry about his weight and what adding 20-25 lbs. for 2gap 3-4 DE would do to that athleticism. At 265-272 he seems more like a 4-3 DE, makes me wonder if he has enough speed to handle 3-4 OLB.
5. Kennard, I'm not familiar with him but love the size. You gave me another LB to read up on.
5b. Carrethers, great size for the position and I've got no problems with this pick. He's got decent mobility for such a big man from the limited tape I've seen.
6. Duncan, I'm not familiar with the player.
7. Gaines, late round CB help for depth and special teams is always a good thing.

a little iffy on the second day, but i like it.

watkins --- TE's are huge right now because of the matchup problems they create. watkins would alter the paradigm of matchup issue by pulling a linebacker off the field and abusing #3 corners. this pick is actually feasible because of the rookie contracts for him and hopkins, and andre's potential retirement. with the statement that you have near a tie for BPA, mosley would make infinitely more sense.

richardson --- a grabber that plays high in what little i've seen. doesnt have great hips, but otherwise very athletic for his size. mostly technique problems as far as i can tell ... whether or not he can be coached up will determine his success. not sure i'd make this pick, as wolf said - someone else will fall.

IMO newton has no business in the NFL, and i have no reason to trust williams. i'm with several others in that i see a lot of success in quess's future, most naturally at LG. we dont have a starting RT on the roster though, and absolutely need to add someone to fill that role.

boyd --- this i'm not sold on. boyd walks the line of athlete and quarterback, but you're building up the wide receiving core. can boyd make the reads required to play a WR heavy offense in the NFL? he seems to me to be more comfortable in a stack or read option type offense that would give him simpler reads and more opportunity to be a big play quarterback. had you steered the draft/FA more towards a running and TE friendly system i can see the potential in boyd. taking a WR in the first dictates the offense and boyd doesnt fit.

martin --- not very familiar with this one. watching youtube from 2012 and 2013 i see phenomenal growth in technique, especially showing very very good hands and block shedding. my only concern would be his role. doesnt have the drive to play in a 2-gap system, nor the burst to be a primary DE in nickel. would be better in a single gap 5-tech.

kennard --- love this pick. versatile high production player who would should excel standing up at the line of scrimmage.

carrethers --- strong pick. good first step and hand fighting inside. would need some time to work on technique and turning bulk into brawn. would make the 53 as backup nose and could possibly start before the end of the season.

duncan --- i know nothing about him.

gaines --- great late round pick. big corner with the ability to play both press man and off coverage. can locate the ball. an absolute steal this late, would make the 53 as a special teamer and could fight all the way to #3 as a rookie.

I appreciate all comment. :mail:
#1 as stated no other player comes with less risk and an instant starter better than Hopkins was his first game is solid imo. I want better at 1-1 just not available.

I agree I'd like Richardson in third but will not be there. I had him projected as LT only & had JuWuan James for RT but got confirmation from others that AR is better than James for right. Add that James is moving up boards, I went with better player.

Boyd, I expect to get that reaction but I have watched him extensively and see makeup that we need. He did not look accurate in wind at the Senior Bowl but neither did anyone. Having two of his WRs on field should be fun to watch.

Martin even though I found article where he said he thinks he can play OLB, not sure I'd do it often. I'd play him at about 285 as DL.

Duncan is a Division 2 player and when researching late day 3 prospects, he jumped out. I don't usually follow that division but hard to ignore hi. I was disaapointed he did not play either Bowl so I enjoyed Atkinson instead.

Gaines' play really excites me but then so did Brandon Harris whom I think was handled wrong.

Thanks for feed back Scoot. As you probably know I have had Mosley on my board for a bit especially if we do a trade down with Browns. IMO, ILB is much deeper than WR in this draft and I have little faith in any Texans WR after AJ & Hopkins. If QB is the priority spot, I want to give that guy great options to succeed. 3 very good WRs and Foster and a better OL is the way I do that.

Good eval on Richardson but we have only seen him at LT that is why I went elsewhere for feedback if he could start day one on other side.

Boyd: we have seen what he did with Hopkins and Watkins so not concerned.

We will continue with good TEs and if Foster returns healthy, that should address your concerns. I am taking one area (WR) and making it possibly one of the best in NFL. Now if Arian is not coming back 100%, I need to go get a RB. Carlos Hyde is the best but I hate to use a second unless we get another in a trade.

Martin, I am looking at his growth as you stated and expect with NFL coaching and strengthening for him to be more than adequate. I think he has enough skills to disrupt QB plus tying up middle if called for.

Carrethers, disagree only in that 63 tackles shows he can own the middle as a starter. Thanks again for insight.

You think that ILB is deeper in this draft than WR? Was that a mistake?

Probably said that wrong, let me try to express my thoughts better. I see Texans' WRs as a lot stronger than ILB. Watkins and Evans are the only two I'd take top 15 and only Watkins at 1-1. I have a thread identifying Mosley as only ILB in first round but there are very strong candidates in lower rounds such as Smallwood, Skov, Borland and Christian Jones. I don't see using a lower first or a 2nd, third or 4th on a receiver unless Kelvin Benjamin fell to third and I'd think on that. Hope this helps?

I see what you're saying now.

Watkins, Boyd and Hopkins reunited. I like it, Boyd has chemistry already with these two wideouts should make it an easy transition.

*Watkins MIGHT be the best football player in the 2014 draft, but I just can't ignore the fact that we have much bigger needs to fill. Great QB's can make average WR's look good as Tom Brady has proven many times, but great WR's don't go far in the playoffs with lousy QB's as Larry Fitzgerals has proven many times. I'm not saying Bridgewater is the next Tom Brady but he's a damn good prospect with all the tools and understanding of the pro game.

*I think between James, Richardson, Moses, Mewhort, Bitonio, or Hurst one of them should be available at the beginning of the 3rd. 2-1 is just to early for any of them. Some 1st round value will fall to us at 2-1 and we either take it, or I wouldn't be surprised to see us trade 2-1, get a mid 2nd and an extra 3rd.

*I did an evaluation of Boyd a few months ago and just do not like what I see. I even read some rumors from the Senior Bowl that he's undraftable.

*I think if we were going to run a Phillips 1 gap 3-4 system, Martin would be very good at 285 lbs. but not for a 2 gap system to absord blockers, play the run, and allow the OLB's to make plays. I think someone like Deandre Coleman fits what we need at DE in the 5th or 6th round.

*As for Brandon Harris, I'm eager to see what new coaching can do for him. Same goes for several other players like Trevardo Williams, Quessenberry, etc...

Regardless of Gap, Antonio Smith did ok absorbing blocks, playing the run and allowing OLB to tryto make plays. Martin should do fine. I saw same comment from Senior Bowl by guys who saw all QBs do poorly due to extreme wind. I have also seen comments that he could go from late first to second round. You & I just have to go with our own evals. Ohio State more than cancels Sr. Bowl.

Your first paragraph disregards I am fulfilling need at QB because you don't like Boyd. I can say same about Bridgewater. Note I have often said I rate TB as best QB in draft but Boyd not far behind. That could change if he falls apart at combine.

OTs I only see A.R. and James as day one starter with Moses a maybe. If we knew Foster would be 100% AND Obrien would use RB heavily, I could move Moses up a bit. He really needs to improve on pass protection and regardless of QB, that moves him down from a starter.

Boyd was my #1 senior QB coming into the season ..... but I wouldn't touch him as an UDFA now. Dude just isn't QB material , he's just an athlete impersonating a quarterback. I'd rather spend that pick on another position and ride out another year with Keenum than waste a pick on Boyd.

Before the season I had Boyd rated as the #1 Sr QB in this draft. My how that has changed.

Mechanically he's not bad , pretty solid footwork , ball handling skills are solid and has a sound throwing motion .... When things are going good for him he can be above average ...

He doesn't have the strongest or most accurate arm ... but the biggest thing to me is mental breakdowns , especially when he gets hit a couple times early in a game ..... everything just falls apart. Mechanics , body language , footwork ... the foundation crumbles.

He just doesn't seem to have that mental toughness .... You watch Manziel get popped , he jumps up and starts talking smack .... Bridgewater and Bortles show that mental toughness too .... that top group takes a hit and rise to the occasion ..... These guy's show that "will to win." I just don't see that same mental toughness from Boyd.

I keep seeing flashbacks of .... McNabb puking on the field.

1. WR Watkins 6'0 200

2. OT Antonio Richardson 6'6" 327 future LT that could be a franchise type

3. QB Tajh Boyd 6'.06 222

4. DE Kareem Martin 6'6" 265

5. OLB/ILB Devon Kennard 6'3" 257

5. (comp) NT Ryan Carrethers 6'1 330

6. TE/FB Joe Don Duncan 6'3" 267

7. CB Phillip Gaines 6' 5/8" 185 36

Only regret is not drafting a RB as I'm concerned about Foster.

I like it. Don't love it. Had you taken Andre Williams in the 6th, I'd love it.

I'm slowly going through all the prospects, I've gone through most of the top picks & so far, Clowney & Watkins are the only two I'd take at 1-1. I know some people are going to say it makes no sense, that WR is not a "huge" need.... but I'll disagree on two points. #1 we've got needs, but no reason to spend our #1 on a particular need if there are other players available later. There isn't another "total package" like Watkins in the entire draft. The drop off to the next "best" WR is huge. 2nd I like Posey's potential..... but other than that, we've got squat behind Andre & Watkins would help protect us against a DeAndre Hopkins sophomore slump.

& I don't want to draft a RT.... I want to draft a LT prospect. If we play him at RT while he develops fine. If he eventually becomes better than Duane Brown, that only helps us over the next 4 years.

My thoughts as well and thanks for understanding where I am going. Can you clarify Andre Williams in 6th? Who? I probably would not kick and scream over a 6th/wished we could trade it for a starter as we did with Myers.

Running back out of Boston College, pulled out of the Senior bowl because of a shoulder injury.

Dude is a beast. As big as Foster & runs like it. Very punishing style, North-South runner, with good speed. Not break-away, or game changing, but good enough to put some dents in an 80 yard drive or two.

Oh yeah, I was going to watch him in Bowl. The shoulder triggered my memory but don't know how severe it was.
