BAD BOY's April mock (no fooling!)

badboy

Hall of Fame
1 WR Josh Docston 6'2" 202 4.5 41 inch vert, arms * 31 7/8 with hands 9.78 "catches everything" with excellent routes, strength to win 50-50 balls and works back to QB if needed. Perfect weapon for Osweiler and to take coverage from Hopkins whom John Harris compares him to. Speed is great and my second choice for this pick is Baylor's Coleman 4.40 and 4.43 pro but he is not the "sticky fingers" Docston is.

2 WR/slot/PR Sterling Shepherd 5'10" 194 4.48 vert: 41 very good receiver with great routes and double moves to get past defenders. Perfect slot but can play outside with electric feet off line. PR: 19/148 @ 7.79 which is same area as Mumphries. He and Strong are not same type player though latter can slot. SS was not only track star but athletic basket baller. * only 8 drops in 253 catches; very enthusiastic blocker which sets him apart from many especially from slot. Second choice for this pick are RBs Kenneth Dixon or Alex Collins.

3 LT Kyle Murphy 6'6" 305 arms 33 1/2 " another very good Stanford OL. Many voiced he "struggled" during one on ones Senior Bowl week when coaches moved him to RT. During scrimmages and game he played LT and excelled. Very football smart and if he misses a block, he self corrects. Long term NFL future. Osweiler will love this guy.

4 DT/DE/Nose Hassan Ridgeway 6'3" 303 arms 33 grades as 6.17 which is "should be instant starter". If he does not beat out either Wilfork or Covington (DT), he will push both. His senior year was good but few knew he played four games at beginning of season with injuries from car accident. He obviously recovered well as he made national highlights with his sack and 34 yard TD recovery versus Ok State. Nicknamed "green mile" in 2014 by Charlie Strong as a gentle giant he disproved that in 2015 when he played like the green Hulk.

5. LT Willie Beavers 6'4" 324 arms 33 1/2 Western Michigan which limited his national exposure but he is a true LT with very high ceiling, plays in space as if born there and will excel in Texans ZBS. 40 straight games at LT and did well against "A team" Michigan State and Ohio State. He may take longer to adjust to NFL than Murphy but when I watched this player I said "this guy does not back up from any opponent unless he wants to give ground." In 2017 he could push Murphy to RT.

5 RB Keith Marshall 5'11" 219 4.31 (yeah I had to research that also) and knee injuries didn't slow his afterburner much. He was high school 4 A champ at 100 meters. Another excellent player for ZBS and another team could risk higher pick on him. He should do well on ST as a gunner and return man. I expect him to move Blue off roster.

6 SS Trae Elston 5'11" 195 , INTs 4 for 156 and two TDs, 70 tackles with 7 TFL and 16 passes defended. Unfortunately, best known for incident of kicking Alabama RB Kenyan Drake in 2014 after Drake was tackled (broken leg) was suspended only 1/2 game. In Jan 2015 arrested for fighting outside a club. I see little risk in drafting him with extremely high reward.

Just realized I posted in college forum rather than mock drafts..perhaps it will get moved.

Sterling Sheppard is the guy I'm eying this year. The Patriots and Broncos have had so much success out of the slot, it's only natural that we mimic that.

I'm sorry but there is no way we go WR 1st and 2nd so what is the point of this exercise?
I would agree but see no other significant player in second round..just my opinion. The purpose is to get folks like you to make suggestions and to create discussion. I think each player is BPA at those spots. I looked at Kenny Clark DT from UCLA but just don't see him in second round past about top 10. ALso, I draft Ridgeway in 4th who is very similar to Clark. I want starters if possible or extremely qualified backups but don't see it. My choices are targets for our new QB and offer plus value to the pick. Shorts will be gone after this season barring a huge year & while I like Strong who ended season impressively, still not certain what he brings. My plan calls for no changes at TE and going with a powerful crew at receiver this year.

Both SS and Docston are good route runners with "it's my ball" attitudes that have vacuum cleaners for hands. Osweiler will drool and the line should also benefit.

Interesting and promising player. He was indeed dealing with significant injuries sustained in an auto accident in the summer of 2015. During his rehab of his rib, lower back and left ankle injuries, he had a difficult time getting his weight down and getting into shape for the season. It showed through the first 3 games of the season. But he came back for a pretty impressive rest of the season. Just a note of some concern is the fact that a reinjury to that same left ankle left him unable to play the last game of the season. I wouldn't be surprised that his decision to enter the NFL early had something to do with this reinjury........with him realizing/concluding that the possibility of his body being beaten up one more year in college would be less preferable than having it happen in his first year in the NFL.

Agreed Doc and unfortunately for Ridgeway this is a heavy defensive line draft. I cannot find anything on the last game ankle injury other than it happened. Hopefully not severe injury. Some other info:

NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt observed that "scouts were shocked at how strong [Texas DT Hassan Ridgeway] is."

Ridgeway impressed throughout Wednesday's Pro Day and had "a great workout," according to Brandt. In event results, the 6-foot-3, 307-pounder (Pro Day measurement) worked the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.69 seconds while dicing the three-cone drill in 7.33 seconds. Brandt called that latter time " really good for a player of Ridgeway's size." NFL Media's Lance Zierlein has previously questioned whether the Texas product will be able to maintain a consistent weight and keep from nagging injuries, but believes that on talent alone he has the ability to emerge as one of the better names from this draft pool if he can keep his worst tendencies in check. I love Doctson and Shepherd, but there's no way we go after both, there's just to many other needs like D-line or O-line that we should go after in the 2nd round. I like the Murphy pick in the 3rd and really appreciate the Beavers pick in the 5th, very good pick if available and added depth that is desperately needed. I don't know anything about Ridgeway, I really like DJ Reader, or Elston so I'll just have to trust you on those. I can also support the Marshall pick in the 5th, low risk potentially high reward pick. Good mock overall, but I'd tweek it a little with 2 D-line picks, a DE in the 2nd and then NT depth later.

Thanks as always for feedback. Texans have drafted same position back to back before in fact two tackles in same round back to back so it is not a Twilight Zone move. As I've posted, I do understand the odds but two main areas of weakness IMO are Oline and WRs. TE is not as important plus very weak draft.

I would think Smith will give his new treasure chest I mean Qb protection and as many targets as possible. Both Shepherd and Docston bring speed and glue to the field. Other than
Hopkins who else do we know is good? Mumphries had 14 catches as did Strong. Short 3 I loved in college but will he remain healthy? He has to have great season to get past 2016 and I think that is 30-70 at best. Why not grab a replacement now?

I think Crick returns and if not, I think Smith/Obrien good to go with Covington and Dunn. Devon Still could really surprise with his daughter now cancer free and he is also healthy. I do bring in Ridgeway who can play DE/DT and Nose. I think he could bypass all but Crick by midseason.

I've always been a proponent of overloading a position in a draft, so I have no issue with the mindset. You can always try to address a lot of needs or draft rookies in a situation in which they have a chance to play more because of the lack of depth on the team. However, strengthening only a few position groups via the draft ought to be a valid strategy. You have to assume that some guys will not pan out, and this strategy protects you against that (some) among other things.

If this was a particular strong draft at the position I might agree... If you could get 2 1st round talents for example. This would be the draft to do it for DL maybe but I don't think so at WR

I doubt any pick at 52 in second would be ranked as a first round this year. Also if WR is weak and you could get potential starters at 22 & 52 plus give your new multi millionaire QB two more quality targets? Both Docston and Shepherd have speed and fantastic hands; seems like a no brainer to me. We also get two OTs and a Dlineman that can play every spot.

Still like this mock but Kyle Murphy seems to be dropping on some boards and Ridgeway climbs a round which doesn't surprise me. I have him ranked a third round. Also as I expected, Beavers also climbing.

Yeh, I have Beavers ranked higher than Murphy with Beavers graded as a 3rd/4th rounder and Murphy as a marginal top 150. In a deep DT class, I also have Ridgeway graded as a 4th rounder. There is a lot of mid to late round talent at DT/NT.

Thanks for feedback, so you think Ridgeway will be there at 119? He can cover DE/DT and Nose and would allow for other needs to be filled if there in 4th; only concern seems to be conditioning and since he appeared healthy after the car accident, a solid program in TC should help. Where do you have DJ Reader? I think he could replace Wilfork's production in 2017. Now considering the following to get players I want.

1. Docston (Coleman 2nd choice) on the mock by Kiper and McShay have Docston going to Tenn at their new #15. I think they will go for an OT even if they have trade back up.

2. Shepherd BPA but would not be shocked if Texans look elsewhere if #22 lands WR.

3. LT Beavers
4. Ridgeway
5. DJ Reader
