Houston trades 10(1300 points) for Denver’s 21(800), 53(350), plus their second rounder next year (which is essentially a third this year @ 165). HOU=1300 points, DEN=1315.

21. Chris Houston (CB, Arkansas) We need another CB opposite Dunta
53. Brandon Merriweather (FS, Miami) We def need a true FS and he is solid
73. Jason Hill (WR, Washington State) We need a good #2 WR
4th: Brian Robison (DE, Texas) Our Dline could also use a hand
5th: Kareem Brown, DT, Miami) ibid
6th: Dan Mozes (C,West Virginia) a ZBS guy that could be our future Center
7th: Daniel Sepulveda (P, Baylor) Punting was one problem last year

Thanks.

I'll take that trade and outcome.

I'm already looking forward to the OT's and RB's next year. I sure hope we can get a 2nd rd back. If we can trade down this year, depending on how far we go...i'd like for us to get a 2nd next season from the team.

i think robison really upped his stock and will go in the 3rd, prolly to a a 3-4 team. i'm weary of kareem brown's work ethic and overall attitude. he gets up the field, which is nice, but i think we could use paul soliai more to clog the middle and take up blockers and space.

I made a thread with a similar scenario, except we got one of Denver's 3rd round picks. But I like getting a future 2nd rounder, '08 will be stacked with offensive prospects.

Houston and Meriweather are great picks.

I think you meant Jason Hill, I doubt he'll be available in the 3rd round. I like Johnnie Lee Higgins as our receiver pick in the 3rd. David Ball if we decide to draft a late rounder.

I'm indifferent towards Robison. 4th round - I'd take him, but I like Desmond Bishop/Justin Durant LB if available.

I don't see Kareem Brown dropping to the 5th. Can't really comment on Mozes, I don't know anything about him, but if what you say is true sounds like a great value pick.

I love that draft. all 7 picks were solid. even your 7th round pick. if we could get sepulveda in the 7th Round that would just be insane...the guy has a cannon for a leg and its only gonna get better. field position ftw

I suspect our new QB might not like that draft to well. Fixed the defense pretty well, but not much help to the O-line.

Yep, I meant Jason Hill(now fixed). Thanks!
Do you see Hill more as a second rounder?

I thought about Bishop and Durant but thought maybe more rotation at the Dline could be useful. They are good picks too IMO.

i think a trade down with the Broncos could be a possibility, but not because of the front office connection. denver i believe is looking to add pass rushers and might feel they wouldnt get one of the top ones at their pick.

-realistic effort...i would still be in favor of the team taking O-Line on the first day, maybe Joe Staley if you trade down to your projected spot (#21). you cant pinpoint Spencer's return and you just paid $48 mil for matt schaub, so overdoing it shouldn't/can't be out of the question. i hope this regime is out make a conceited effort to put a quality O-Line out there like the provious one didnt.
-i'd prolly draft a LB project in the 7th.

I suspect our new QB might not like that draft to well. Fixed the defense pretty well, but not much help to the O-line.

Well, here is the thing, the Texans have A LOT of holes and I thought it was not really possible to fix all. I took Houston in rd 1 as the BPA and one that fills a hole. I wanted to take Ryan Kalil but I had him projected as early 2nd round. Merriweather was the BPA that fit a signifigant need. Next, I took Allen as i saw no Olineman worth such a high pick. 4th and 5th were DE and DT. At this point the best Oline person i saw was Mozes a center and more of a 6th rounder(at this point in my mind). 7th went punter as I really believe we could use a better one.

In terms of O-line, I think that it is not as bad as some people think. I think that we made some good off season backup/depth signings and that Spencer and Winston are the bookend tackles we have been hoping for since the franchise started. I also like Pitts at LG and Weary at RG. That really only leaves Center. I toyed with the idea of moving Weary to Center(his position in college) and using Mozes as a RG and that could work too. Point, is I think we are maybe one position and time(to gell) from a solid workable line. Also, we have Ahmen now who is a good blocker and can provide extra protection when neccesary, and Leach who can also block.

I understand completely what you are saying. However, I honestly believe that the one position we really need is Center. The person I really want for Htown is Ryan Kalil. Problem is he will very likely gone by the time the Texans pick in the broncos spot. The next best person I think is Mozes(who I projected in the 6th).

Personally I am not sold on the OT class(after JT and LB) in this year's draft. Next year's looks much better and I would prefer getting a LT next year.

-I think Jordan Black is at most your swing guy.
-If Spencer's health is still up in the air less than four months away from training camp, I don't take any chances. A day one O-Line draftee is a must. This, to me, trumps any position on the field.
-Doesn't Winston project more to the guard spot?

I dont feel a whole lot better about the O-Line than I did when the season ended. The only addition from outside the organization is Black, along with the resigning of Salaam. I am not ready to mail it in and say or line is even workable yet.

Maybe its just opitmism, but I believe that Spencer will be ready to go by the third or fourth game and Black and Salaam can sub for him until he is ready. I am not sure if Staley is really an upgrade over Salaam or Black and by selecting a day OT, one of them likely gets cut as there are only so many players we can have on OT.

I really think that Winston is a versatile Olinman. I believe that RT is his best fit, but he could probably play guard or even LT in a pinch. I think the only thing he would have a lot of trouble with is Center.

Interesting draft.
I think the Broncos are a possible trade down since they are trying to win right now with impact players (at least their FA moves indicate so).

Lynch will get picked by Buffalo before he reaches GB, but that does not change too much.

I am still curious who Detroit trades down to. They pretty much have set themselves up to not want to stay in that #2 spot, but other then the Falcons or New England or Arizona, I can't really see anyone being able to afford a jump up to #2.

Mozes is an interesting idea. Kubiak seemed very enamored with the Notre Dame OL (granted it could be smoke and mirrors) that could also be a nice second day pick.

I agree about the center part being as high a need as a long term need (probably easier to address then LT this year too).

One other thing I have been mulling is that Black supposedly is flexible enough to be back up tackle or starting guard. I would not be surprised to see him start next year or at least compete hard for any OL slot. I wonder if he wants to try for center if Spencer returns and he can't get LT. He only played LT in KC because they needed him to from player injuries. Or if he takes a guard spot (is still LT back up) and one of our starting guards moves to center. That might work nicely.

If you can't get Merriweather (either he's gone or McNair doesn't like his history) who do you grab then?

Lastly, I hear Selpuveda is projected 5th round (no way we take him there either). Wow do we need a good punter though. If you are going to win games on defense you have to win the field position war.

Detroit might have some trouble trading down. As you said: Atlanta, NE, and Arizona might be the ones to jump up. Might be tough to pull off an adequate trade if Arizona(the only 1 of three i see being really interested) offers.

I was intrigued by your thoughts on Black. If he can indeed play guard, we could stick him at RG and move Weary to Center. Center was Weary's more natural position in college and it might bee easier finding a long term solution at guard than center for kubes and the ZBS

awesome awesome awesome draft in my opinion if it plays out. with houston and merriweather the secondary will be damn good and fast. i'd love it if that played out. big ups.

Check it out.

Black has played both tackle positions and right guard from NFL and college.

In his interview coming in, he indicated that he's flexible, finds positions easy to learn, and mostly wants to play (implies start on the line) next year.

Very interesting find. If he indeed can play RG(which it would seem he can), that can make our drafting interesting as well. If we do get Dan Mozes then our O-line might be filled with people who can play multiple positions(not a bad thing at all). SPencer could play LT/G/RT, Pitts can play LT/LG, Weary can play RG/C, Winston can play RG/RT/possibly LT, Black could be RT/LT/RG, Salaam could be LT/RT, and Mozes could be G/C. That is a lot of versatility on the line.

Agreed. Like your Soliai pick also. Another thing I keep thinking if The Brown kid From Cal Poly and the Black kid from New Mexico are still on the board on day two both of those guys can fly and would seriously up grade our speed at their positions. Might take them a bit to get on board. But they will at least up grade the tallent on special treams worst case. Best case, they beat someone out for a job out of summer camp.

You send me five bucks for shiping and the CD, I'll send you a copy of Staley's preformance during senrior bowl pratices and the game. Staley is a product of the three OLT canidates going back to school. You're just as likely to get Seth Wand as you are to get Quam Harris.

I really like Dan Mozes but I think he will likely be gone early day 2 not late day 2. He will IMO have to be drafted in the 4th, 5th if we are lucky. I might be completely wrong but that is the way I see that situation playing out.

Thank you. They may go with what they've got no doubt. But it's not going to be prety if the injury bug strikes again. I couldn't take the gamble that's for sure. And I'm not talking about multipul injuries...just one at the correct spot will start the dominoes a'tumblin' .

OK, first what i like about this mock. I would much rather the Texans come away with a CB and a FS, rather that just a FS @10. So, a 2-for-one deal would be outstanding. I also believe that a very good WR can be found in the 3rd round. Maybe not Jason Hill, but someone good. I like taking a pass rushing specialist on the 2nd day, the Texans don't have to come away with an everydown DE. And yeah, this team needs to find someone to compete with Chad Stanley, and hopefully take his job.

My differences with this mock begin with my belief that the Texans need to bring in bluechip offensive linemen, rather than bargain basement specials. This franchise needs to continue making a commitment through the draft in building up front. That began last season with the drafting of Spencer and Winston, and that mindset should continue. I agree with htownfoozball in that a 2 gap type DT would be a better fit for the Texans. This would keep blockers of Ryans, and allow him to run to the ball even more effectively. As far as what type of corner the Texans should look at, I'd prefer a bigger, physical corner who can matchup with some of the bigger wideouts that are becoming prevalent in the league. Guys found later in the draft, such as Baylor's Anthony Arline or Syracuse's Tarnard Jackson, would suffice.

Thanks for your comments. I have looked into the draft and am not sure where the blue chip olinemen are. While Joe Thomas and Levi Brown could probably be considered Blue chippers, both would have already been taken by the time Houston picks. I am not high on Staley. Perhaps we could take Justin Blaylock, but I am not sure he is the best for our scheme(he seems a bit heavy). Ugoh seems more right tackle, Sears comes acorss more like a guard than tackle, Marten doesnt seem like a good fit(not really atheltic). The rest like Ryan Harris and the rest don't come across as Blue Chippers.

Now. if somehow Kalil falls to us in the second round I am all in favor of taking him. Problem is, I have him going in the early second. I suppose we could take Kalil in round one(Denver pick) then use the second rounder on Merriweather.
In the third take David Irons to round out day 1. Day 2 we start with DE Dan Bazunin, then take Paul Soliai(DT), take a WR in the 6th with Rhema McKnight, and finish off with a little competition for Stanley in Sepulveda.

so the new draft would look like:

21. Ryan Kali(C, USC) A blue chip O lineman
53. Brandon Merriweather (FS, Miami) We def need a true FS and he is solid
73. David Irons (CB, Auburn): a physical CB to compliment Dunta
4th: Dan Bazuin (DE, Central Michigan) A DE who could be a controlled Peak
5th:Paul Soliai (DT, Utah) a 2 gap DT that should clog
6th: Rhema McKnight(WR, Notre Dame) a second WR to help out AJ and Owen
7th: Daniel Sepulveda (P, Baylor) Punting was one problem last year

How would this look in comparison to:

21. Chris Houston (CB, Arkansas) We need another CB opposite Dunta
53. Brandon Merriweather (FS, Miami) We def need a true FS and he is solid
73. Jason Hill (WR, Washington State) We need a good #2 WR

As much as I like Kalil, getting a shut down corner is probably a higher need, or rather, if one is available you take it (esp considering they are some of the top salary FA and command crazy trade values)

In that case I see Houston in that spot.

Who do you take in the second if Merriweather is not there or McNair vetoes him?

Some comments/thoughts.

Though I would like Houston at CB, I think I would still have to go with your other mock and get Kalil in the 1st. Overall, it looks like a better draft.

You have us picking Sepulveda in the 7th on both mocks. I wouldn't mind that happening, but there's no way he lasts that long. He is projected to be the 1st punter taken and go in the 5th or 6th round. If by some miracle he is still there in the 6th round I hope Kubes and Smith have the good sense to grab him.

Still not sold on the FO taking Merriweather if he's there at #53. They may wait and go for Gattis or Jackson in the 3rd, and get McCauley in the 2nd.

McKnight would be a good pickup in the 6th, but I think he's projected to go in the 4th or 5th rd.

As far as Ryan Harris not being a "Blue Chipper" to you, well, I think he might be to Kubes. Remember, Kubes interviewed Harris at the Combine and came away impressed, and also Kubes has said he thought this was a deep draft at OT. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't pick someone like Harris in the later rounds, even if they got Kalil in the 1st. JMHO!
