HOUSTON -- Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Friday that Mike Sherman will decide "over the next three or four days" whether he'll coach next season -- and possibly join the Texans' staff.

"Mike's going to make a decision over the next three or four days whether he wants to come back and coach this season," Kubiak said. "I'm hoping to be the first one to know that, so I'll let you guys know Monday."

Sherman was fired as Green Bay's head coach on Jan. 2 after the Packers went 4-12. He interviewed for the head coaching vacancies in Buffalo and with the New York Jets and declined offers to become the offensive coordinator in both places.

Kubiak, who replaced the fired Dom Capers as Houston's coach on Jan. 26, worked with Sherman on the R.C. Slocum's staff at Texas A&M in 1992-93.

Kubiak said he is "95 percent done" assembling his new staff. He is still looking for an assistant defensive line coach.

if we get Sherman I will be happy, I am just wondering about the defensive side.. I thought we would get a big name there too..
 
I'm willing to give the defensive coaches a vote of confidence. When Richard Smith served as the Oilers' linebackers coach in 90 & 91, Houston ranked 8th and 6th respectively in rushing yards surrendered and 8th and 13th in Passing TDs given up (that was up from 26th the year before his arrival). I like the aggressive approach he took whether he was coaching special teams, the offensive line, or the linebackers. In terms of the desire to get a "name" coach, remember Fangio was a "name" coach when he arrived after having served as DC at Indianapolis and Carolina. "Name" doesn't necessarily equal wins.

even so, i dont to expect anything of that sort to happen untill atleast 2 more consecutive losing seasons. but i expect we will see posts calling for a coo (how the heck to u spell that bleepin word?) by mid-season if we are anything less than 4 and 4. Mark my words. :twocents:
 
Young coaches often bring in a young staff. This is one of those wait and see kind of things. Unless you work in the NFL there is no way you can be too pumped up about our current staff because we don't really know who these guys are, what they can do, heck we don't even really know their style, yet.

I pray Sherman comes on board. I think he will be a much needed calming influence(especially on the sideline) on Kubiak and his young staff, that will help smooth out Kubiaks transition to Head Coach.

Next year should be a fun season to watch....of course I am pretty easy to please. I enjoyed watching this season even though we stunk it up. I just like football, and when my team stinks I seem to learn even more about the game.

I think Sherman after a couple of seasons would be up for a HC spot somewhere.

I am pretty satisfied with the staff and very excited about the offseason so far. Man I am ready for some football already. Guess will have to make due with the ProBowl and NFLE.
 
Based on what I witnessed last year, I'm not sure why we kept the DB coach, otherwise I guess we're ok. We'll see. Does DC have a new hair stylist? That's the most important question.

Getting very little quaterback pressure from your front seven would make any secondary look horrible. The secondary problems last year were not entirely Jon Hoke's fault.
 
I am concerned about the lack of experience at this level of some of the coaches, but we went for the "big" names when we brought if Fangio and Palmer and Y'all know where that got us.
 
I thought we would get some bigger names at Offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator so I am disappointed.

However, I will give this staff a chance. Big names dont just start out as big names, they have to work their way up, and hopefully these guys can do just that.

i wouldnt call palmer or fangio "big names"

getting sherman would be a "big name", kubiak is a "big name"
 
I just hope that our DC is well equipped to control the D himself and that Kubiak sticks more with the offense. I've already had quite enough of a defensive HC ruining an offense. I don't need to see an offensive HC ruining the defense (not that it's not already horrible). It really concerns me that we didn't get a big name as DC, but our guy may turn out fine.

I don 't really think we need a big name OC with Kubiak as HC.

Coach C, I even stooped to watching all of the Pro Bowl, just to get in more football for this season--LOL.
I too am "ready for some football"!
