Are Chron assumptions about Bush status correct

CITY CAT

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texans team sources are highly expected to draft some guy named Reggie Bush with the first pick. Is this legit or is it just what John Mclain and Richard Justice hope?

Does anyone think it is pretty funny how Richard Justice refers to Reggie Bush as his new best friend?

It sounds like the Texans people are expected to draft Bush, as in expected by the fans and media, not that the Texans people themselves are expecting that they will end up drafting Bush. Either way, I'm sure the team won't make up their mind until right before the draft, definitely not before seeing Bush and everyone else at the combines and in workouts and after entertaining trade offers for a couple months. This will be a long process of evaluating all their options, so don't expect a definitive answer out of them for some time.

Fans and players that is true, but "Bush's best friend" also said that Mcnair and CC feel that way.

I don't think it is just necessarily the fans or the media saying that the Texans will pick Reggie. John Clayton has reported that team and league sources say that we will draft him. Chris Mortensen has reported that team sources indicate that we will draft him. Richard Justice has reported that team sources say that we will draft him. John McLain has reported that team sources say that we will draft him. Even Charley Casserly basically said it with out saying it by saying that our biggest need is an offensive playmaker.

that is exactly what you expect to hear in this situation, hopefully the jets, titans (leinart) and 9ers are getting real antsy....

I emailed John McClain yesterday about this very thing. He wrote back and said he's been told by people in the Texans organization that they fully intend to draft Bush, they just can't comment on it right now since he hasn't declared. He made it sound like the decision is made.

THE NFL DRAFT said:
Bush is our ticket to sunday, and eventually Monday night games.

You mean Monday, and, eventually, Sunday night games. Next year ESPN gets MNF, and NBC gets SNF. They are flip-flopping the packages. This will more easily allow the league and NBC to switch out some bad match-ups during the season.

1) I don't believe anything McClain says until it actually happens.

2) Whether or not the Texans actually want to draft Bush (of course they want to, but will that be their best option? That remains to be seen) they have to act like they do want him in order to keep his trade value high. If we immediately start publically shopping offers and waving him around like a piece of meat on sale that we are desperately trying to unload, teams are going to offer us cheap trades rather than possibly going overboard with a rich offer. The Texans need to play this as if they are extremely interested in Bush in order to get a top trade offer for him, but for now they need to sincerely go with the opinion that they intend to draft Bush until a good enough offer is made to change their minds. Portraying that outwardly is important, but portraying it inwardly is just as important, so if the Texans management are sitting around saying to themselves that they don't want Bush then they will likely accept less of an offer for him as well. Either way, for now the Texans management have to be of the opinion and show others that they intend to draft Bush unless a better offer is laid on the table for them, and I think that one will be and that the team will take that offer when it's presented.

Bush is more of a done deal than Carr, whose contract was done before the 2002 draft.

Justice was trying to be entertaining and dryly sarcasmic as is his style.

The Chronicle writers, like them or not, have access that about 99.99% of the people on this board don't. That doesn't mean what they say is gospel, but they are often in the ballpark if not right despite the vitriol displayed toward them from behind the anyonymity of message boards.

I agree. Unless someone bowls them over with an offer they can't refuse (won't happen with this pick), the Texans will draft Bush.

yep.. Bush is coming to Houston unless San Fran totally hamstrings themselves to get him.. which wont happen.

We will still have plenty of picks left to get Olinemen

The team is in a box with Bush. They don't want to be the guys that didn't draft Jordan. If someone offered the moon and the stars, well then they could get out of it, because they could point to how REDICULOUS the other team was and we just HAD to take advantage of them (see Ditka). Otherwise, they have to pick him or be burned at the stake in the press. If Bush blows up....well then they took the player EVERYONE thought was the next comming of....insert name.
