Any post 1 June FA signings for the Texans?

What FAs do you guys think (if any) that we are in the hunt for after the 1 June cut date? I have my eye on SFA alum Jeremiah Trotter...he would be an impact player anywhere he went and he's only 27yrs old. Downside is that we can't swing a dead cat in the room without hitting a LB of some sort. Also, I don't know if we are willing to shell out the bucks for Trotter right now.

Enough from me...how bout you guys?

Possibly Jason Gildon (if the price is right) to mentor all the DE turned OLBs now on our roster. As for any others I could always see us bringing in a vet or two for the O-line.

I think I remember Casserly saying in an interview after the draft that any players they brought in after June 1 would have to be willing to accept a non-starting role...

but as far as june 1st cuts go...what about the tackle from tampa bay...keynetta(not sure on the spelling) walker...
I didn't know he was supposed to be cut...I thought Tampa Bay had to much invested in him...

Any word on any WR being released on June 1? Would like to see the Texans add a veteran WR if there is a descent one for a good price. :twocents:

kenyatta walker led the league in penalties last season. i guess he wore out his welcome in tampa. as for WRs, the only ones worth looking at that i can think of off the top of my head would be David Terrel and possibly Muhsin Muhammad. i've read that the texans are very interested in Jeremiah Trotter along with the Eagles and Seahawks. Gildon may be a possibility too.

I think we would have to see if anyone is available to provide good depth at the NT position and I sometimes feel like the youth we have at WR is a liability right now. I wouldn't mind bringing in an experienced WR to sign maybe a two year deal. Although I do see alot of young talent at our WR position, I would feel more comfortable with us having a guy who can make the good catches late in the fourth quarter to sustain drives.

I think that a solid veteran WR would be a good move, I just don't see anyone on the potential FA lists that I would go for. I think the mentor role was supposed to be Bradford's...I just don't think he is the guy though.
I thought (and I went out on a limb here) that we might have had a shot at Dennis Northcut, but he just resigned with the Browns.

They haven't been happy with Kenyatta Walker. I wouldn't be surprised if they let him go.
Don't expect it. He doesn't cost enough for them to give up on him already. He is still in his rookie contract where he was the 17th overall pick, so not too much $.
They have other O-linemen that cost more that would be of more cap help to cut.

You need a six pack of patience J-Man. Give the guys on the roster a chance. Better o-line, their production should go up this year.Northcut cannot get open
when covered by better coners. He is not an upgrade. They will not bring in a cancer into the lockerroom. Try again big guy. JMHO.

Coming out of college Stackhouse appeared to be a good rusher, receiver, and pass-blocker but was lacking as a run blocker. I don't know how well he did in that department with the Giants and Vikings but obviosly not as well as desired. It seems like he is similar to Baxter IMO. Norris is the best run blocking FB we have. Unfortunately he seems very one-dimensional. Full back is looking like TE did last year. We don't seem to have the complete package but plenty of specialists.

Pete, you have a point on Northcutt (not sure I would go so far to call him cancer!)...physically he is not an upgrade. Northcutt is probably also a poor example for what traits I was looking for us to pick up.

I am pleased with our 2 young receivers, AJ has the potential to be the next TO, hopefully without the mouth, and I believe we will see Gaff emerging as a top tier possesion receiver in the next 2 seasons. As for Bradford...my thought was that I would like to see a teach-mentor for AJ and Gaff, and oh bye the way be able to catch the ball. I am not seeing that in Bradford (and I admit I could be dead wrong)...and Northcutt is probably not the guy we need for that either.

I don't look at Northcutt as a cancer. The guy was making about 700,000 a year because his agent messed up. He could have made probably 5-6 million a year if that hadn't happened. I'd be upset too. It was the same situation that happened with Owens. The league moved up the void date.

The Browns decided to redo his contract and give him $3 million a year for 3 years.

That's a lot of good info guys. I've heard quite a bit about Houston being interested in Trotter, but there are a couple things to keep in mind. Casserley said that if the Texans do sign a player after June 1 he'd be expected to fulfill a backup role. I don't see that sitting well with Trotter. Also, Trotter has good speed and covers well, but I don't know if he'd fit well into a 3-4 scheme. I think the more likely play will be Jason Gildon if the Texans are looking linebacker. He's got the experience with the 3-4, and he would bring added leadership to the team. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

But the problem with Gildon is his age, and I have heard he has lost a step due to age and injury. And Trotter snubbed us before, I don't see the Texans giving him another chance. :twocents:

Bottom line...it is a thin crop of FAs that will be available after 1 June, particularly when you look at our team needs. Adding in LB to the mix now, unless he's an instant impact guy will be bad news.

If Casserly said that any one defensive player that they sign after June 1 will essentially be slated into a back-up role, then we can safely assume that they are not looking at Trotter. They are not looking at Gildon either. And why should they? They are not looking to sign a starter, peroid. And if they were Casserly would sound different. Besides the linebacker core is solid - plus with the drafting of Babin who they think is pretty darn good, it would not be sound minded. Only with some freak-rare situation would we end up bringing in another starting backer

True, age is always a concern. However, I think Gildon is still a possibility because of the experience he brings to the game. He would serve as a backup or situational rusher. Don't forget he still put up pretty good numbers last year. He posted 42 tackles, 6 sacks, an interception, and 6 passes defensed. Not bad for a guy who lost a step. Another thing to remember is that he's played virtually injury free since 94, and he's only a few years removed from his 13.5 and 12 sack seasons. Granted all this is dependant upon if Gildon would be willing to have a reduced role in the defense, but I feel he would accept it sooner than Trotter. Pittsburgh used him as a DE on passing downs the past couple seasons if I'm not mistaken. With all the defenses in the league either switching to a 3-4 or at least implementing it as another option for its base 4-3 defense (like the Patriot's played last year) Gildon could be looking to land a starting spot. The age thing isn't as much of a worry as in years past since Casserly signed Weigert. Still if Gildon is looking for money he might find more of it in one of the teams desperate for edge rushers in a 3-4.

How bout George. He could be a solid Full Back.
No chance, he doesn't fit our scheme physically and I can't see Eddie lead blocking for DD. His asking price will be to high as well...he is clearly a quality guy that I would love to have in the locker room...but it's just not going to happen.

Eddie George is a RB, not a FB. He is also over the hill, over-paid, and would be lucky to be the third RB. Why would he even be interested in coming here? This one has no chance.

Mike Pittman from the Bucs would be a big running back for us, if his problems are over. It would give us an awesome running game with Hollings and Davis. His problems have all been in the state of AZ. He played at Fresno State and so I've seen him run. He is a very hard runner and will run over people. I really don't know if Casserly and company would look at him, however. Given his problems he might not have a high salary value. The Raiders are probably a more likely stopping spot, but we passed on his availability once before.

Michael pittman is not a guy the texans would be interested in. His off field problems are disturbing.

There is no way Pittman will want to come here since he would be #3 on the depth chart. Frankly, there is no real upside for us to take a flyer on him anyway...too much money for not enough skills, potentially a major 'tude problem. The front office has took the strong stance of picking up quality lockeroom guys and good citizens, this is clearly evident from the excellent chemistry that our team shows as it grows up together.

Come on J-man Bradfords not a bad reciever he's just dropped a couple of balls :bag: but who on our recieving corps hasn't (Billy Miller included) what Bradford has been is a scapegoat for a young team have patience, and as for leader ship roles Bradford has spent alot of time in the off season bonding with AJ and Gaff :grouphug: .............ok ok maybe they were going to the club and playing playstation but thats how guys bond

Let me clear something up...I don't think Bradford's ability at WR is in question, he's not bad at all. I am thinking of what he brings to the table as far as leadership and teaching qualities; it is common practice to bring in an older, but still capable, QB to work with your hot new draft pick and that is the same tact that I was taking here. I also noted that he might be that guy but it is definetly not evident.

Last note...being a buddy isn't always the same as being a leader or a teacher.

I think Joe Johnson would be a great signing for us... He'd be a perfect fit as an end in a 3-4... He's about 290 lbs and can rush inside and out. He'd certainly be good insurance for Gary Walker and I think he could push Robaire Smith to the nose if something happens to Seth Payne.

Also, I'd be interested in checking out David Terrell... I don't think he's been given a fair opportunity in Chicago - though I'm not really in position to have much insight regarding him. :twocents:

I believe if David Terrell is released whatever team picks him up will be picking up a good WR that hasen't had the weapons around him to be good.
