Another Coaching Candidate

Texans86

Rookie
I was just reading this article from Foxsports.com about the upcoming coaching changes in the NFL. They had a name I hadn't seen on the message board yet.

"The top name out there is Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, who would be a natural in Green Bay. But there's a good chance, too, that Houston owner Bob McNair will make a run at Ferentz.

Ferentz, who earns $1.6 million with the Hawkeyes, hasn't made a decision about making himself available for the NFL, but some believe he may entertain the right offer now that his son is graduating from high school. He could be a package deal with top personnel men like Scott Pioli in New England or Phil Savage, who appears willing to seek a settlement to escape the Browns because they are taking away his authority over contracts and the salary cap. Both Pioli and Savage are friends with Ferentz."

I haven't seen him coach and I don't know much about him, so maybe some out there can enlighten me to his qualities and tendencies. Who knows, he might be what we need.

Good link 86. Here's an excerpt from your link which is interesting, especially the speculation about Reeves:
"The top hometown name in Houston is Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, although there are rumblings that Dan Reeves may want to come out of coaching retirement."

I'd take Ferenz with Pioli or Savage over Reeves and Kubiak or Reeves and Phillips. Although all these choices are a step up over the current regime.

I'm happy to see Capers going (because I don't think he had the respect of the players) but what about the GM? Last year EVERYBODY knew what Houston needed position wise (OL, etc) but it seemed like nothing was done to improve the situation. I don't want to see a situation like in Detroit.

I wouldn't be disappointed if Kubiak comes in - but I am beginning to hope that Ferentz is pursued. I really wish McNair would go to South Bend, IN, with a large bag of cash, buyout Charlie Weis' contract and bring him to Houston.

I got a name for you guys when it comes to an OC job...Mike Tice. I think he's going to get fired this year, and is going to have to to find a new job. He won't get a HC job, but I think he gets an coordinator job.

Tice could be our cruise and intertainment Director. :redtowel:

I know that ALL coaches have to start somewhere, but aren't there any PROVEN NFL coaches available? Guys with like winning records and such?

Alright guys, starting to get a little off subject. I don't knopw much about Ferentz. Is he an offensive minded coach? defensive? Do you think his skills will transfer from college to pro? Spurrier had problems with that. He's a great college coach, but doesn't do much in the NFL. Also, I do not know much about the support staff he might bring with him. Any comments would be beneficial since I'm surely not the only one who knows nothing here.

Ferentz is a 4-3 guy. Switching could take a long time with the personnel we have.

Nah... Houston's OLB's are not talented enough to be 3-4 guys and are better suited for DE. This is a 3-4 defense with 4-3 personnel, the switch will be easy.

It won't be that easy moving our OLB's to DE. They're very undersized and would need to gain almost 20-30 lbs.

Wrong and wrong. Peek and Babin are natural DE's and are bigger than one of the best DE's in the league (Robert Mathis).

Neither is athletic (or smart) enough to be a 3-4 OLB.

wonger you're absolutely right, we've got 4-3 guys playin the 3-4

its like this whole time cass and capers have been trying to push square pegs into round holes

only guy who'd need weight is Charlie Anderson

On the plus side, even if our guys are undersized, we have so many of them that they would rotate in and out all game long. So size is a moot point.

Good info Texans86. It seems to me that his name is out there for a good reason. I just have this bad feeling about our "coach hunt"

You guys know how sometimes when you spend long enough thinking about something the "reality" of the situation just kind of comes to you? It's like all of a sudden you have this moment of clarity and you realize that the obvious has been staring you in the face for weeks or months and you just didn't see it.

I keep getting this creepy feeling that this is exactly how we're all going to feel in about 3-4 weeks when Dan Reeves is announced as the next head coach of the Houston Texans.

I don't totally know how I feel about it but every single day that passes brings me closer to thinking that's exactly what Bob McNair is going to do.

I would be terribly upset...:(

I can't comment on Ferentz.

Be patient....J Johnson will be sorely tempted now that we have locked up the #1 pick. He is not my first choice but I think the majority of the board would embrace him.

Kirk Ferentz's Iowa Hawkeyes are now playing on ESPN. Said this year he is interested in many of the soon to be openings in the NFL.

HAHAHA, we should also see if we can hire those two ex-falcons cheerleaders. We could also get Culpepper and T.O. H-Town party-team incoming! :)

STAY from Kubiack!!! I want the Saints to land him.....:)

Honest question: do you guys think that Capers can coach in another city or he just clueless as a coach??

He'll end up coaching, just not head coach. I can see him as a Defensive Coordinator somewhere.

Possibly the most sought after defensive coordinator of the off season.
