AJ:Texans draft watch: RB C.J. Spiller

Wolf

100% Texan
Continuing our draft watch series, let's take a look at senior running back C.J. Spiller from Clemson.

The Texans primary needs entering the 2010 draft are at running back, cornerback, interior offensive lineman, free safety and defensive tackle.

Spiller's current projection from NFL Draft Scout is early to late first round, which should tell you something about this year's running back class.

Read any scouting report on Spiller and you will see the same thing - comparisons to Felix Jones and Reggie Bush, i.e., an explosive runner with speed to take it to the house.

But with that comes the knock.

"Spiller is not the kind of back who can carry a team by rushing 20-25 times a game over the course of a 16-game season. Like a Reggie Bush or Felix Jones, though, he can be a situational player who gives the offense big-play capability out of the backfield. ... Spiller is apt to be the first back taken in the draft in spite of his lack of power and bulk." - NFL.com

Sooo....Slaton 2.0? I'm not so sure this would solve our running game.

Maybe Slaton with rocket shoes on and what alot of people are forgetting, he is a special return man. You give him 12 to 14 plays at RB a game and make him your return man and he will have an impact on a lot of games. Well worth the 20th pick.

Adding a weapon like that to our offense would finally give it that home run threat thats been needed to open things up for for Johnson. If safeties cheat back on Johnson, Spiller will eat them alive catching passes in the flats. LB's CANT cover him.

This draft is full of bigger RB's with ability that can be had later.

He's Reggie Bush without the 2nd overall pick price tag and probably more talent, less hype and a better head on his shoulders (don't think he's as fragile either). Every interview I've seen or heard with him has left me feeling that he will really help any team in any way he can when they draft him. In one, he said he didn't care if he was the waterboy as long as it helped the team win.

I'd love to have him in a Texans uniform.

If he does make it to #20 he'd be awful hard to turn down, the guy is a playmaker, but he could also be great trade bait for someone like San Diego who's desperate for a RB.

This . .

echoes my feelings perfectly. Kudos to you sir.

Personally I don't know anything about him, but going by what the type of player he seems to be on paper, don't you think this still leaves a hole in our running game? We would still need to add in a power back, which is the position we are in now. I will have no complaints if we take this guy, but I think I would rather see us pick a defensive player.

We need more than one RB regardless of whether or not we draft Spiller. I would love Thomas Jones as a FA and Spiller as our change of pace back and return specialist.

I’m surprised that C J Spiller RB Clemson and Jahvid Best RB California are the same size and speed and yet people think that C J is a better running back than Jahvid! Jahvid is a much more technically sound running back and runs through the tackles with the vision and cutting ability that makes him a much better bet to impact right away. C J still has to learn how to use his speed and is a cut and go running back who just out runs everybody and prefers to bounce everything to the outside. You need more than that for the next level. Don’t get me wrong C J is good but Jahvid has much more mature on the field skills.

Here's one Draft analyst who thinks Jahvid Best is a better choice than Spiller ?

It's probably because when they stand next to each other Spiller dwarfs Best. They have almost the exact same measurements, but when you look at the two of them Spiller does look much bigger. Obviously since he is bigger he is the better RB.

Nice rant there Drew. Yeah there's nothing wrong with Tebow's mechanics it is all just religious persecution. Tool.
