AJ:Texans draft watch: CB/FS Earl Thomas

Wolf

100% Texan
Continuing our draft watch series, we'll take a look at another underclassman, defensive back Earl Thomas, a local product from West Orange-Stark H.S. and the University of Texas.

The Texans primary needs entering the 2010 draft are at running back, free safety, interior offensive lineman, defensive tackle and cornerback assuming Dunta Robinson leaves in free agency.

Thomas played safety at UT but because of his versatility, you will also see his name pop up in the cornerback discussion as we work our way through the scouting combine and Pro Days.

Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com has said that Thomas has "good range, he's a big hitter and he's instinctive."

Prior to their matchup with the Longhorns in 2009, Missouri offensive coordinator David Yost said “Thomas is super-quick. I’d say he has corner ability as far as quickness and coverage skills. He’s not the biggest guy you’ll ever run into, but he takes on all comers. He’ll whack you."

Defensive back is a need for the Texans heading into the 2010 draft.

There is no quality depth at free safety behind Eugene Wilson who ended the 2009 season on injured reserve, and the Texans will need to replace starting cornerback Dunta Robinson if he elects to move on in free agency.
