Ahman Green and Matt Schaub Help 'Tackle Autism'

100% Texan
HOUSTON, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Two professional football players,
running back Ahman Green and quarterback Matt Schaub, will announce during
a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, September 11, 2007 that they are
teaming with Easter Seals and Avondale House to launch the new Houston
Tackles Autism campaign. The city of Houston has welcomed both marquee
players with open arms and Green and Schaub would like to give back to the
community by raising $1 million to help local children and families living
with autism.
"I look forward to working with the Houston Community, Easter Seals and
Avondale House to make sure that we are a winner in this battle against
autism," said Green.
Help for Houston Families Today
Many Houston families are forced to wait nearly a year to receive an
autism diagnosis for their child. Without an autism diagnosis, children
miss out on the critical benefits of receiving the earliest treatment
possible and placement in special early childhood programs that address a
child's medical, physical, behavioral, sensory, nutritional, communication,
and developmental needs.
While there's still no known cause or cure, autism is treatable. People
with autism can and do live meaningful lives. That's where Easter Seals and
Avondale House come in.

As a parent of an autistic child I cannot express how important an early diagnosis is. The problem is it is a diffucult condition to diadnosis in younger children.

I really hope the Texnas, Schaub and Green can raise more awareness and generate the funds needed to help out the possible autistic kids in the Houston area (I live in Dallas (which thankfully has a few benefits, one being one of the best children's hospitals in the country) or I would already be calling to volunteer).

Well done guys.

original article didn't say how (unless I scanned over it)

(9/17/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - If you think you feel good about the Houston Texans' win this weekend, wait until you hear what it means to one group of deserving Houstonians. That's because every time Texans quarterback Matt Schaub scores or throws a touchdown pass or running back Ahman Green scores, they're helping to tackle autism.

Most fans in Houston celebrate every time the team scores, but no one will be celebrating more this season than one man.

"I am autistic," said Maurice. "I use my autism to go where I need to go."

Maurice is one of thousands of people living with autism in Houston.

"My mission is to give back, that's what I encourage y'all to do," he said.

Maurice's recent call for action got the attention of two new Texans and they decided to use football to make a difference.

"This whole charity is important to me because it's something I wanted to do since I knew I could play football," Green said.

For every touchdown Green scores or Schaub throws, $2,500 will be donated to the cause.

have you seen these diets they put some autistic kids on to 'cure' them? some no gluten thing or something... i saw a tv show about it. i think it was jenny mccarthy's kid or something. (my description doesn't hold water i know--i blame her work on Singled Out-- but it might be worth looking into, i dunno.)

at my psych's office, there's this 44-year-old autistic guy that comes in. one of the most articulate people i've ever met if you give him the chance to get over his nerves. picks and chooses his words very carefully. but other than that, he's basically a 6 year old... last week he'd just gotten back from his first ever trip to disney world and he was wearing one of those mickey mouse hats with the ears and a button. ballsy.... he's cool.
