Aggie Ball in 2007

With me being on the a&m football staff next season I am very excited about what 2007 might bring. Here is the preview by espn.com :

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=2774945&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab2pos1

What is good about the aggies this season, is they return a lot of key players and a lot of talent.

Running Game:
I think the duo of Lane and Goodson will be the best in the nation next season. Goodson, really is the next reggie bush. I followed him in high school, and watched him in college, he is a player. He needs to get stronger and get in a little better shape so he can be featured more in the games, but he certainly is a player. Lane is a freak of nature. Watch him at Lufkin and you will pity every high school defensive player that had to face him. He puts pain on you everytime he runs, runs a lot like Jerome Bettis, but runs a little bit bigger. He wants the ball every play and he will never be denied with his tenacious attitude. They also have a quarterback who plays with a lot of heart in mcgee, has a lot of leadership skills and is the icing on the cake of this running threat.

Passing Game: ... Needs improvement... like crazy. They have a quarterback who has potential but definately needs to work on his awareness and accuracy. The good part is he has one of the most talented tight ends in the nation returning and he is now just focused on football. The downside is they really have no talent at receiver (it would have really helped to pickup Dez Bryant out of Lufkin). If they can get a better passing game, it will really make their offense complete, but right now it is just one big question mark.

Defense: Run defense one of the best. They lose defensive all-star Justin Warren, but they keep a lot of role players who should be part of a dominating unit next season. Their defensive backfield has been suspect, but they have a young corner and safety who showed promise last season and with time in the weight room and film room could really pay off in 2007.

With their always crucial home field advantage, their unstoppable run game, if they can improve their defense and passing game, Texas A&M will be the talk of the south.

Your thoughts?

The thingy to get excited about is the top ten class coming in in '08. See if the aggs can get two in a row vs the horns. I'll believe a one loss season when I see it.

This team is more talented than some would let on. Sure, we laid an egg in the Bowl game. Don't forget about our season though.

In 2006 the Aggies did not lose a road game. The key victory, of course, being the defeat of tu in Austin.

The games that we did lose were at home, unfortunately. We lost three games by a difference of 6 points, total. We could have easily gone undefeated.

As for 2007, I am excited to say the least. I will be there when tu falls next year, which they will. Remember that Texas has to play us at Kyle next season.

Martellus Bennett has dedicated to playing football, which means that we will have an excellent talent who will be looking to have a breakout year. Expect a lot from him. Jorvorskie Lane will be back, as well as Mike Goodson. Those two make up our explosive running game, with the Thunder and Lightning, respectively. Stephen McGee rarely throws interceptions and he has progressively gotten better at his game. He is the definitive leader on the field and the team respects him.

That's just the most notable players. Our defense held Texas to 7 points, on their home turf. That is the lowest they have scored in many many years. Our offensive line is not the best for pass blocking, but as you well know, our running game is boosted by it.

Anyways, I feel sorry for anyone who has to try to bring down the J-train. The guy is a beast.

Look for the Aggies to make waves next season.

i will put my trust in fran for one more year...if we can beat at least 3 of the big 4(tech,neb,ou,tu)...then

"In Fran We Trust"

dude, aggie beating texas was a fluke like ucla beating usc. franochio has macks number once a decade!

I know you guys will still be saying it's a fluke even after we beat you next year, too. I expect that degree of teasippery.

I just recommend that you guys bring a lot of ice to Kyle Field next year. Prepare to get your arses handed to you.

Your thoughts?

I agree with everything you said. Chemistry wise, they will be one of the best in the land. However,

PASSING GAME, as you mentioned, was non-existent. With Fran's offensive system, how do you think the passing game will improve? It's mostly an option-style attack.

kyle field lost its luster the day they "upgraded" from rc to little frannie. kyle field worries me not at all. alot of my friends are aggies and most of them hate fran as much as they do stoops and ou. during frans term a&m has become third tier in the state behind texas and the sand aggies from lubbock and that is a fact!

What you just said makes no sense, but because you are a teasip fan, I will brush that off as "to be expected".

Kyle Field worries anyone and everyone who plays there who isn't an Aggie, son. 86,000 people make up one of the loudest crowds in all of college football. Even the football greats will admit that playing at Kyle is hell.

You know where I stand as far as the Aggies are concerned, but TexansLucky, I know you and I are not that far apart in age but I think you fail to remember what a real, dominant, scary Kyle Field was like. In the 90s, it was known you were not going to beat the Aggies at home. The Wrecking Crew was in full force and we were known as Linebacker U. Sadly, those days have come and gone. There was a pride on our home turf that frankly has not been there in a while. Not saying we won't be dominant again. But Kyle Field is nothing compared to what it used to be. Yes, 80,000 screaming Aggies can be quite intimidating, but our football team is who gets out on the field and wins games. Sadly, they just haven't been doing it at home like they used to. Gig 'em.

aggieland has more tradition that any other school, it's a great place to watch a game and a great experience....it's loud. no team wants to play there no matter what coach is there.

most aggies don't like fran. but who would when he never gave you anything? recruiting was better but they werent winning. finally this last season atm had a great year and beat texas. i have a feeling aggies will be warming up to fran if he continues to produce. that's the whole thing there...if atm keeps winning they will like fran. its like anywhere....

if UT started sucking ass, longhorns would'nt like mack brown. if they kept having losing seasons and being at the bottom of the big 12 south..they'd be calling for a new coach.

I suppose you guys are right. Playing at Kyle Field ain't no thang at all. :shades:

As an aside -- I was at A&M from 86 to 90, and we routinely beat UT. Every time I would needle my UT friends, they would say something assinine like, "A&M? We don't care about A&M. It's a one-sided rivalry. We only care about OU."

B to the S. Because the last few years, when UT was winning, those same friends call me up to return the favor of years past. Tell me again how you don't care.

A&M whupped the snot out of UT this year, plain and simple. And, frankly, although Mack Brown is clearly a superior recruiter thus far, his team palls next to A&M. Go figure. (Note: That Shipley kid is a huge talent.)

As for next year, anything can happen. I just know that it is dam (sic) difficult to audible at Kyle, and visiting teams generally recognize it as one of the most difficult places to play.

I find it rather funny that if Fran lost that game he'd be run out by lynch mob. He eeks out a win and should be giving K State A&M's largest thank you note ever for taking out McCoy's Shoulder. The pass interference call in the end zone was a big help too.

While A&M fans this year might point to some of their close losses this year they should also be worried about some of the close wins. Like why did the army coach elect to run the ball into the endzone? That decision puzzled me. They weren't overtly impressive in the early puff cake games last year either.

They are returning a lot of people from last year's squad and the running game will be there and Martellus Bennett is a hoss. But they're not goingto win big games unless McGee can up his passing numbers a bit. I like the kid...he's a tough SOB and i like his fire. That said i think like a good portion of A&M players the past few years have been overrated by their fans. The recruiting class was medicore with some bright spots committing. I know a few fans here locally were a bit disapointed with the big UT win thought they'd do better. Mostly 3 star talent with heart.

While UT got another crop to reload for another run. I think John Chiles is a bit unheralded and will make a solid impact next year unless they deceide to reshirt him. Also got some great Line prospects as well. Texas as a state is now being picked off heaviliy by OU and LSU and of course Texas. Leaving A&M with decent prospects at least cause it is the football nation here.

A&M got outclassed ,outgunned and exposed in the Holiday Bowl. I smiled though that whole game. I knew it'd be just like when they played Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl. Expect teams to look at that game tape and maybe continue to have a LB shadow McGee in the option and finding holes in the 4-2-5 scheme over the middle.

If A&M continues to hang its hat on the UT 12-7 miracle.(see UCLA and USC) instead of focusing on winning a championship like your rivals did and i must say i am kinda of pissed at all the UT gear around here in the BCS area. These people would've gladly spit on UT before the tittle game...and you guys talk about your fans.

All that aside i want A&M to do better this season so it reflects well on the Big 12 as a conference. I really want us to be an elite conference and it pisses me off seeing the PAC 10 rise back up. Good luck next year :)

Hook'em Horns.

I agree: A&M was outclassed in the bowl game.
I disagree: A&M is not "hanging its hat" on the UT win. We had 8 others also. Nuff said.

Fran --- the jury is still out. IMHO, he has yet to find his sea-legs for recruiting. Slocum definitely had his niche, marketing the program to the rural kids, especially in East Texas. Since his ouster, LSU has seized the opportunity. Next year will be very telling for Fran's future. Recruiting is one thing. Working with the resources you've got is another.

Anyway, that's about all I'll have to say about the A&M thing, as I am here as a Texans fan.

well, think what you will aggie boy but as i said third tier. by the way i am 29 you are 19 dont call me son sheep boy!

Just because your momma pushed you out 10 years before mine did doesn't mean anything. Refer to your own response as proof to that statement.... son.

ok, proof is texas and tech and ou have all beaten you at kyle field. all of the above own you, matter of fact you are slippin close to baylor boy! thats what makes you aggie!

Bravo! Well done! Such wit, such clarity if thought, such...a lack of any fact; not to mention maturity.

Of the following school's Fran as two wins combined
UT
OU
Tech
Nebraska

Fran has lost to Baylor, nearly lost to them at home, been run off the feild in a couple of bowl games, done nothing to improve the aggie football program (y'all where much better off under RC), gets bet like a red headed step child in in-state recruiting by UT, OU and LSU, nearly lost to the Citadel at home, goes 9-3 playing the biggest cream puff of a schedule.

And why do aggies feel the need to runtheir mouths all the time?

I'd go with inferiority complex.

Oh and don't forget the 77-0 OU game.

Well said. Only two things I really disagree with.

1. Every year under RC, the Aggies continually got worse and worse. I think you have forgotten that the Aggies had not had a quality win under RC since the 1999 T.U. game. Yes, I liked RC as much as the next guy. But RC was simply hanging on the coat tails of Jackie Sherrill. Our dominance in the 90s occurred, because of the reputation A&M developed under Jackie Sherril. Yes, we got busted by the NCAA for recruiting violations but it was under Sherril that our name was made. After RC had enough time in the program, he began to run it into the ground.

I'm not saying Fran is not doing the same thing, but we are at least seeing improvement. Once again, we have a legitimate running game, finally have a decent quarterback (yeah McNeal was pretty good but overrated), and are finally getting some good linebacker prospects to bring back Linebacker U. Under RC, things did not appear to be getting better at all. We were getting worse not better. The least that can be said is that our 9-4 record this season is better than anything we have done since 1998, our lone Big XII Championship.

2. Interesting you would ask why Aggies feel the need to run their mouths all the time. I mean, after all, a tsip never feels the need to run his mouth. Very interesting.....

I'm NOT a longhorn, just somebody who thinks the FACTS should be represented from time to time.

Fun fact: Among BIG XII coaches, both past and current, RC had the most guys in the NFL. Yup, y'all sure were lacking for talent. Info was from last year.

Cool. Well, like I said, I agree with most everything you have to say. One win against T.U. is nothing for us to get all excited about and brag about two months later. When we start doing it regularly, or at least once every other year, yeah we should talk about it, because I know we will hear from the tsips. Now the Aggie basketball team... Regardless of what happens on the 28th, we have been playing some damn good basketball. All I'm hoping for is that we "Beat the hell out of T.U.!"

1. I do think towards the end of R.C.'s Tenure things did slow down considerably. I would point to the rise of OU and USC recruiting as a possibility. A&M used to do a pretty good job of getting guys of out of California to play. I think once Toledo left the playcalling on O got stagnant and lead to the eroding offense.

As for McGee said it in an earlier post. Tough kid but that he's got to pick up on the passing game. It honestly makes me wonder about his arm and if using the option Fran is trying to hide the fact he's just not a good passer. Getting some decent prospects again but still think at best you're often left with what's left between UT, OU, and LSU. Or if guys don't want to sit on the bench too long at one of those places. Agreed on the 9-4 season but a LOT of work to be done. That Big XII title game was quitea bit of luck too. I felt bad for Mike Bishop. I thought that was such a good K-State squad.

2. ...sorry but the school fight song is pointed at UT. I see sawed off horn stickers on cars here. If that's not automatic points for talking i don't know what is. As a UT fan the only time i feel the need to say anything is when an aggie starts to initiate anything. Which they do. A lot. OR like a certain poster has 12-7 on their sig line....of course i'll call my own sig line out as something as well.
