AFC South Draft Needs

Nice article looking at the AFC South by one of the Football Outsider guys:

link

They list the top 5 draft needs of each team. And it is sort of funny, in part:

Texans:

4. Outside linebacker: DeMeco Ryans is filet mignon stuck between two pieces of moldy pumpernickel.

5. Any position that is not middle linebacker.

I'd lay off a quarterback too.

Titans:

Who they will settle for: Any non-quarterback who is married, religious and has never been to a strip club. Or local favorite receiver Robert Meachem from the University of Tennessee.

It's worth reading. Don't agree with all of it, but has some good thoughts.

Good find TC. Was actually kind of comical, but I unfortunately think that they used that to hide the fact that they didn't know a great deal about the teams.

Not a bad assessment. According to the writer, the Texans need 1. O-line help, 2. a Wide Receiver, 3. a defensive tackle, and 4. an OLB.

They didn't consider CB or Safety, which I think fit in as big needs.

On the other hand, the Texans are in a good spot. I can't see them drafting anybody who will be available at the ten spot who won't help out incredibly. The LTs, WRs, and DTs available at that time will all be filet mignon.

Thats what caught my attention on it. They had a whole section saying what the Texans might end up doing that was almost all about selecting a DB but they failed to put it in the needs section.

I also agree that we're in a good position in the draft. Whoever we get should be an impact player and an immediate starter.

2007 DRAFT: TEAM NEEDS
AFC SOUTH
HOUSTON: By the numbers: 2006 W/L - 6-10; Rankings: Off - 28; Def - 24... It has been a tumultous off-season for the Texans in which starting QB David Carr was dumped after 5 up and down seasons in Houston and replaced by former Atlanta backup Matt Schaub. Schaub didn't comer cheaply as the Texans had to part with two #2 picks, including one next year, in addition to flipping the 8th and 10th picks. Whether Schaub has any more success than Carr had in Houston may depend on the Texans finally settling on a LT. Houston did bring in a couple of veteran free agent OTs in Jordan Black and Ephraim Salaam and hope that promising 2006 3rd rounder Charles Spencer can come back from.a serious knee injury, but the position remains very unsettled. The running game also got a boost with the signing of RB Ahamn Green from the Packers, however, Green already has a lot of miles on his tires and the Texans may need to invest a high pick in a complimentary back to help carry the load. While the Texans could be tempted by a quality LT or RB prospect early this year, the free agent signings may allow them to look at other areas of concern such as WR where Houston needs a #2 receiver to take some of the heat off Andre Johnson. There is a similar story at CB where Dunta Robinson is an emerging cover corner on one side, but the Texans need to upgrade on the other side. The Texans also could use a true FS as incumbent safeties C.C. Brown and Glenn Earl are both more SS types. And despite taking DE Mario Williams with the #1 pick overall last year, the Texans still could use another speed rusher coming off the edge, although getting Williams healthy would perhaps been an even bigger plus after the former NC State star was hobbled by a foot injury throughout much of what was an indifferent rookie campaign last fall. Primary needs: LT, WR, CB, S, DE, RB
