A Jaguar fan offers his condolences...

Stephen Z. Smith

Practice Squad
Hi, Stephen Z. Smith here from Jacksonville.

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that Mario Williams was signed. As a FSU fan, I watched Williams play a few times last year for NCS and caught one game in person. I came away thinking that he'd be a good impact player in the NFL but he's no Julius Peppers by any stretch of the imagination.

Though I'm glad our defense won't have to face a D. Davis | R. Bush tandem when we play twice next year, I feel for you guys. Not being facetious. Before the Jaguars came to Jacksonville, I was a Lions fan for a long time, and I had to endure the constant first round picking that shaking your head in confusion for a few weeks after draft day. :brickwall

I was hoping for the Titans to grab Young and the Texans to get Bush just to make things more interesting in our division offensively. Now it looks like neither of those things are going to happen. :crying:

Anyway, hopefully you guys won't have to deal with Asserly for too much longer. I'm still a Lions fan, and I'm still trying fruitlessly to get Matt Millen fired.

Good Luck next season, if you happen to visit Alltel for Jaguar/Texan games this coming year head over to the bar I own, the Ritz, in Jacksonville Beach and the drink's on me.

I'm concocting some ideas right now...how does the Flaming Asserly sound? Hmm....might want to try another name...
:stirpot:

Why condolences? Our defense was crappy last year and just improved it a bit with a need. The initial shock of no sexy first pick is already wearing off of me.

Not sure if I'd drink a flaming asserly.

i don't know how anyone who's watched williams play doesn't think he's a force. must not have been paying attention.

that williams in good, just dont pass on greatness! Certain players come around in a life time,,,,, a Bush of Caliber is very hard to pass on,,,

He'll be a force, no doubt. Like Sam Bowie, he's not going to be a bust per se but he'll always appear that way because the team drafted him instead of a player with "Michael Jordan-level" potential written all over him. I just don't understand the mentality of drafting for need at #1 when your have a gamechanger like Bush to choose. If you can't trade out of the spot, I can't see how you can pass up on a player of that caliber.

If Shack Harris did that in Jacksonville with the #1 pick he'd be gone in a year. Casserly better pray that Bush doesn't break any records next year.

Amen brother,,, your GM just passed on the ROY,,,, and the talent to maybe the best back in history,,,,, his kid has the kinda of stuff that greatness in made of,,,, aka B.Sanders, E. dickerson types,,,,,,,,, nice move. I think if you are a Texan Fan you gotta be thinking WTF,,,,,, Its good to be a Bucs Fan,, just hope the Aints trade out instead of taking him

Shack Harris tried picking for need when he couldn't find anyone to trade down with back in '04 and as a result we selected Reggie Williams at #9, as we were in need of a wide receiver, instead of drafting any of the many quality players available with 23 picks remaining in the 1st round. It was an idiotic move because we could have picked Ben Roethlisberger, Jonathan Vilma, Tommie Harris, Vince Wilfork, Steven Jackson, Kevin Jones, etc...but Harris was intent on picking for need rather than talent and we paid the price.

He's since learned from his mistakes. Casserly doesn't seem to have learned anything yet.

Tastes a bit too grainy...I'll stick with the Casserly Concoction.

Charlie Casserly -> :homer: (in the Homer Simpson sense)

Why not trade down if we are not going to pick the best player to come out of the draft in 25 years? This makes absolutely no sense. I agree with the need for better defense, but to take a questionable DE in the first pick is idiodic. His own coach had to kick him in the *** to pick it up after mid season, does he have the heart and drive? If defense was the priority, then trading down and taking an animal like A.J. Hawk would have been the right move. I'd still rather see us have two high quality tailbacks in the system, and draft Reggie to make things happen, but understand the need to beef up the defense. But the trade down, and possible add of Hawk would have been the right move in my opinion.

Good point. Even if they got the short end of the stick in a trade with Green Bay and only got GB's 1st and 2nd or 3rd picks for the deal - the Texans could still draft a very proven defensive player in A.J. Hawk, probably the safest pick in the draft, and would have an extra 1st day pick to add to that.

This was truly a sick move. Nothing against Mario Williams, but to pass up Bush for this guy was mind-numbingly ridiculous.
