2018 TRAINING CAMP

I wish this was the case.

Unfortunately draft status/$$$$ usually do matter. It's human nature for guys in the FO to want to be proven right. So draft picks usually get more chances. Not all teams do it this way. The Seahawks/Pats come to mind.

Gaine didn't draft Miller but he did sign Ellington this offseason. With the difference in this years salary of ~$300k, the guy that performs should be getting the shot. Salary and draft status are negligible in this case.

For me it's not so much about cheap $ but opening slots for players with more potential.

I guess that's relative.

I think based on potential + current ability (excluding money, although that's a part of it) Braxton should be on the team.

If he's not I don't think it's a HUGE deal, but I'd prefer if he was.

I keep seeing that about the guy that performs, but you all realize Miller has been more productive this pre-season, right?

Miller has also played more snaps; seemingly fighting for his spot. I'm not saying either guy is going to set the league on fire, I'm just saying Miller hasn't been healthy since he played QB at OSU. Ellington at least made plays last season and has something to build off.

Preseason Week 1
Braxton Miller WR 36 snaps 65% of Snaps
Bruce Ellington WR 29 snaps 53% of Snaps

Ellington only had 70 more yards than Braxton last year and one more TD.

I think it's a bit overblown how much he's supposedly out performed him. Especially seeing as last year was Miller's 2nd year in the league. Look at Ellington's 2nd year in the league. Like Arlington has said, they are pretty similar in the type of player they've been.

As far as the snap count in pre-season, besides game 2 their snaps have been pretty even. But you all didn't mention snap count...you just initially mentioned production. Braxton has been the more productive player. Ironically, the only game where Ellington was more productive is the game where Braxton played almost the whole game.

And in the third pre-season game where you want to get as may of your regulars together as possible, Braxton actually got the start over Ellington.

Wow. Ellington seemed much more productive than that to me last year.

Give me the 6'-1"/212 lb Coates (with a 41" vertical) over the 5'-9"/195 lb Ellington. No, Ellington isn't faster; check the links.

Both know this might be their last, best shot at sticking in the league.

Give me the bigger end zone target.

Would be a lot easier call to make if the team had confidence Coutee is ready to take over that slot role week 1. I want Vyncint Smith on this team more than both of them even if he’s not as productive this season because he’s a developmental player with big time potential that I don’t think will last stashed on the practice squad.
