How are players selected for the NFL Combine?
Participants are determined annually by a Selection Committee. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent twenty-five NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft.

2015 NFL Combine: Snubs and Surprises
By Dane Brugler

Even with over 325 prospects invited to Indianapolis, there were several notable omissions from the official list. Of the 84 underclassmen who declared early for the 2015 class, 13 (15.5 percent) did not receive a combine invitation... Below is a breakdown of the snubs and surprises at each position...

NFL Scouting Combine: Top prospects who weren't invited
The 323 participants in the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine have been announced.

Here's a position-by-position look at the number of invitees, declared underclassmen who weren't invited and some notable players who won't be there.

I am looking at drafting Malcomb Brown #16, Henry Anderson # 113, #144 Marcus Hardeson. We have no info on Nix or if Pickett can be productive for more than one more season. Playing a rotation of Brown, Hardeson, Nix and Pickett at the Nose and one DT would be exciting while Pickett is out after '15. Anderson and Pagan back up Watt. It would also allow Nix to be brought along slowly.

Hardeson 2014: Ts 53, 15 for loss, 2 passes broken up, 1 QB hurry, 3 forced fumbles with one recovery, 2 INTs and 10 sacks. 6'3" 311 33.5 arms (Sr. Bowl)had a reported 4.7 40 time (at 290 lbs IIRC) and was HS Qb. He can also play DE.

Add a vet FA ILB as I think we will and we have no run problem.

Auburn: 7
Clemson: 7
Oregon: 7
USC: 7
LSU: 6
Michigan State: 6
Stanford: 6

More combine facts and figures
» Eight power conference schools have no participants: Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Vanderbilt.

» National champion Ohio State has four participants, which shows how young the Buckeyes were this season.

» The number of quarterbacks invited, 15, is the fewest since at least 2005. There were 16 in 2013 and at least 18 in every other year from 2005-14.

» This is the third year in a row with 35 linebacker participants.

» There will be 12 guards at the combine. Five of them played in the ACC, and four played in the SEC. The only other FBS conference with a guard participating is the Big 12, which has two.

» For the second year in a row, there are no quarterbacks from the Big Ten. And one year after having no quarterbacks, the Pac-12 has four this year.

» Michigan State leads the Big Ten with six participants, but that figure would rank tied for fourth in the SEC, fifth in the ACC, tied for third in the Pac-12, and second in the Big 12.

» Colorado State, which is in the Mountain West, has five participants; that's more than all but one team in the Big Ten and Big 12 and more than all but two teams in the Pac-12.

» Central Michigan has as many participants as Michigan and Nebraska (3). East Carolina also has three, which is three more than North Carolina and one more than North Carolina State. Memphis has three, which is one more than Tennessee (2) and Vanderbilt (0) combined. FCS member Chattanooga has as many participants as Tennessee. Texas State has two participants, which is two more than Texas Tech.

Prospects bring passion to Houston regional combine
By John Harris Special to NFL.com

Unlike the event in Indianapolis, nearly 95 percent or more of the attendees won't get a call from an NFL team. As such, it'll be the last time that many of them ever put on the football cleats.

Although that's the harsh reality of the situation, it's not what Saturday was about. It was each player's story. These weren't players with the most traditional of backgrounds. There were approximately 175 players in attendance and less than 15 percent played FBS football.

They came from places like Belhaven, Bacone, Dordt and Faulkner. When strung together, it sounds like a law firm but players from those universities got the same opportunity as those from Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Cincinnati and Rutgers.

They came with baggage. Super Bowl XLIX hero Malcolm Butler's road trip roommate at West Alabama was Fred Barnes. Butler's roomie strung together two solid years at FBS Georgia State before off-the-field issues forced him to transfer. After transferring from Oklahoma State, Lamar All-American punt/kick returner/S Kevin Johnson was dismissed from the team at midseason.

"I missed class and didn't take care of my responsibilities," Johnson noted.

Both were amazingly candid about their pasts and were impressive during the workouts.

They came from other sports. Former Maryland lacrosse All-American Jake Bernhardt hadn't played football since his days at Lake Brantley High School in Florida.

But, his father, Jim, noted "Jake just can't get it (football) out of his system."

The younger Bernhardt was as impressive at WR as any player on Saturday. Wide receiver prospect Justin Sims was once the 2011 C-USA 100-meter champion and a Southern Miss home run hitting wide out, but an ACL tear in 2013 forced him to transfer to North Alabama for his senior year. He played one game in 2014, but his 4.36 (unofficial) 40-yard dash time should get a bit of attention. Shorter University RB Kirk Wilson was also a track star on a national championship team and blazed a 4.37 (unofficial) 40 on Saturday as well.

They were overshadowed. Cincinnati DE Terrell Hartsfield led the Bearcats with 12.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks during the 2014 season, yet his teammate Jeff Luc received the nod to go to the Senior Bowl. Rutgers C Betim Bujari was a second-team All-AAC player in 2013 and a three-year starter on a bowl team in 2014.

There were record-breakers. Although Wisconsin star Melvin Gordon and Oklahoma stud freshman Samaje Perine broke the FBS single-game rushing record in back-to-back weeks in 2014, the REAL champ -- Heidelberg RB Cartel Brooks -- was in Houston wearing the number 131 on his chest.

"My phone was blowing up both weeks when they got close," Brooks laughed.

He ran for 465 yards in a game in 2013, setting the all-levels single-game mark, but he knew that it'd be his workout, this one workout, that got the scouts' attention.

They came for redemption. Harvard WR Ricky Zorn entered 2014 as one of the most decorated pass catchers in school history. He was top 10 in nearly every category and aimed to shatter every record while playing on a 10-0 team. But, a hamstring injury essentially eliminated his season, all but for one amazing catch on the final drive of Harvard's stirring 31-24 win over Yale. Zorn noted that he felt he had to give it one last shot while healthy and he strung together a solid workout.

They all came to Houston on Saturday with a story. But, the one that resonated most was that of former UAB tight end Tristan Henderson. Looking at the player listing prior to the event, very few names stood out initially. But, the birthdate of each player is on the player listing and Henderson was the oldest, having turned 27 in December. It was enough to want to know his story and it's when the entire day came into focus.

"I wasn't mature at all after high school so I decided to jump boots in, as we say," Henderson said, describing his decision to enter the military.

His military stint included an 18-month split tour duty of Iraq, but the game of football was still in his heart. After enrolling at Cerritos College in California, he asked if he could play on the squad. He did so well enough to get the attention of FBS coaches, even though he was older than most graduating seniors. After having his hopes for a FBS scholarship come and go initially, he eventually got the scholarship call from UAB head coach Garrick McGee.

In 2014, the Blazers got a new head coach, Bill Clark, and a new start. It showed as the Blazers went 6-6 and made noise initially as a potential surprise bowl contender. Unfortunately, what made national news was that the powers that be wanted to shut down the UAB program, leaving a slew of players and coaches looking for schools and work. Upon receiving the disastrous news from the UAB president Ray Watts, the now 27 year old with a wife and three year old stood up and delivered one of the most stirring, passionate soliloquies in recent memory. Over the next few days, the video went viral and all anyone could talk about was "THAT UAB player."

That UAB player was Henderson. That speech, as he noted, was for the young guys in the room, for his brothers, for his team and for his game. Mostly, though, it was a man passionate about others and football, speaking honestly from his heart.

Thinking about Henderson and that speech, he became the one true symbol of this entire day. Why?

Passion.

Henderson said he's realistic about where this goes, but there wasn't a chance in Hades that he wasn't going to at least give it a shot. Much like the rest of the group in attendance, he loved football too much to not be in Houston, no matter how old he is.

No matter the school, the baggage, the other sports, being overshadowed, the record setting, or seeking redemption, there was one thing that tied them all together.

They all came to Houston with passion for this game.

Nice piece by John.

Jake Bernhardt, son of Jim who is Texans HC Bill O'Brien's "right hand man" Director of Football Research.

And so it begins.

2015 NFL Combine Rumors: Monday, Feb. 16, 2:40 p.m.

D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida:
Which offensive lineman will leave the Indianapolis with significantly improved draft grades? I'd gamble on D.J. Humphries of Florida. I presently grade Humphries as a 3rd rounder, earlier than most, but the feeling is he could move even higher with a good combine performance. Scouts believe Humphries is one of the most athletic tackles in this years class and holds as much upside as any of the top rated blockers. Playing the year at 280-pounds, he presently tips the scales at just over 300-pounds and is being tutored by former New York Giant offensive lineman William Roberts. Expect not only good testing marks from Humphries but a solid performance in position drills as his ability to effortlessly move about the field and change direction will surely impress.

Jeremiah Poutasi, OT, Utah:
Another junior offensive lineman I expect to leave the combine with a buzz is Utah junior Jeremiah Poutasi. The Utes starting left tackle the past two seasons after manning the right side as a freshman, most teams grade Poutasi at guard with some now referring to him as Mike Iupati Jr. I graded Poutasi as an early third round pick and have been told scouts rate him much higher than those on the outside (media).

T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh:
Many grade T.J. Clemmings as a mid-first round choice but it's an opinion those affiliated with the league never shared. Sources told me the early first round grades placed on Clemmings were unwarranted and set up unreasonable expectations at the Senior Bowl. Most now believe Clemmings needs a strong combine performance and pro-day to stay in the first round. And though the short term picture may not be as rosy as some predict, league insiders all feel Clemmings best football lay ahead as he's still learning to play on the offensive line. There's also a belief Clemmings could start his pro-career at guard, something I've said all along, before being kicked outside to tackle.

Ty Sambrailo, OT, Colorado State:
Another top rated blocker who needs to turn in a good combine performance is Tyler Sambrailo. The Colorado State tackle struggled at times during the Senior Bowl and teams came away questioning his functional football strength. On the other hand his athleticism is not a concern (still remember watching as Sambrailo caught a touchdown pass last season). Sambrailo may not have the fastest forty time on Friday but check and see how his shuttle and 3-cone times stack up against the rest of the offensive linemen. There's still a chance Sambrailo slides into the late part of round one. I previously posted on the Seattle Seahawks admiration for Sambrailo and now hear the Green Bay Packers are in the mix. The team could lose Bryan Bulaga via free agency in the coming weeks and the feeling is Sambrailo's athleticism and ability to easily move around the field makes him a perfect fit for the Aaron Rodgers led Packers.

Ali Marpet, G, Hobart:
After his sensational performance at the Senior Bowl a lot of eyes will be on Ali Marpet in Indianapolis. The Hobart product has been working with former All Pro Bob Whitfield, who's taken to the small school lineman. I'm told teams are struggling how to grade Marpet and at what position. Most teams have listed him at guard or center, with a few slotting Marpet at the right tackle spot. Almost no one has listed him as a left tackle as arm length is a concern (calling Jeff Backus!). Expect Marpet to put up solid not sensational numbers this week (5-second forty, 30-reps on the bench). I'm told Hobart will try and hold their pro-day on March 26th, the same day Syracuse is hosting NFL teams. The plan is for Marpet to workout early in the morning before scouts make the one hour drive to Syracuse, who has denied Marpet the opportunity to participate in their pro-day.

Syracuse doing my boy Marpet wrong, there. Somebody needs to step up.

NFL Combine Players to Watch

John Harris | Texans Analyst

There are plenty of football fans that don’t like the NFL Scouting Combine. Or, better put, they may not appreciate the Combine.

Shockingly (not really), I’m not one of those.

Now, I understand its place as just a piece in the college football-to-NFL Draft-player-accumulation process but I’ve always been a fan of watching athletes do things 99.4% of the rest of the world can’t do.

If you’re like me in any way, shape or form, even just a smidge, you’ll want to know who to watch at the Combine. I know you’re going to watch every single minute and I’ll be right there with you. So, by position, here are the guys who are going to treat the Combine events like a 5th grade obstacle course and some surprise names to learn along the way as well.

Quarterback
Combine superstar
Bryce Petty, Baylor: Outside of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, Petty’s more than likely the best athlete at this position. He should run in the 4.6 range and hit 35+ inches on his vertical. Plus, he should interview extremely well and win teams over as he did with people/media during his career at Baylor.

Surprise to watch
Brandon Bridge, South Alabama: More athlete than polished quarterback, Bridge is a developmental candidate, perhaps more so than any other quarterback in Indianapolis. But, he can run and has a strong arm. He’ll have a chance to show both off over the next few days.

Running back
Combine superstar
Duke Johnson, Miami: This could be his show if he participates in every event. He ran a 10.6 100 meters in high school, also a 22.31 200 meters in addition to being a long jumper. His most redeeming quality is quickness, but if he backs that up with a legit 4.3 or 4.4, look out.

Surprise to watch
Zack Zenner, South Dakota State: The speed is real even though when he walks in the building he reads more like an accountant than a next level running back. I’ve seen him sprint away from some speedy secondaries at the highest level of college football.

Wide Receiver/Tight end
Combine superstar
Pick one - Phillip Dorsett of Miami may run in the 4.2 range. Auburn’s Sammie Coates is an athletic freak. Tyler Lockett of Kansas State will crush the COD/quickness drills as should Duke’s Jamison Crowder. Louisville’s DeVante Parker...East Carolina’s Justin Hardy...Ohio State’s Devin Smith...I could go on and on. Of any position, WR is loaded with athletic jaw droppers.

Surprise to watch
Kaelin Clay, Utah:He only played one year for the Utes but earned an invite to the Combine. He ran a smoking 10.4 in the 100 and 21.07 in the 200 as a track star at Long Beach Poly HS. He could sneak up on a lot of people in Indianapolis.

Offensive line
Combine superstar
Brandon Scherff, Iowa: NFL Network will only show the bench press for players like Scherff and that’s good. He’s a weight room junkie, but can move. He ran a sub-5.0 second 40 in the spring, not to mention he was a four sport athlete in high school. Scherff is one of those players that EVERYONE in the weight room stops to watch. He’s a machine.

Surprise to watch
Jamil Douglas, Arizona State: He, arguably, may be the strongest player at the Combine. He’s benched 430, full squatted well over 550 pounds and can run the 40 in less than 5.0 seconds. He had a solid week at the Senior Bowl, but can truly shine at the Combine.

Defensive line
Combine superstar
Shane Ray, Missouri: The first step. Nothing more, nothing else - his blazing first step. That’s what I first saw when watching him in 2013 so his quickness measurements should be top notch. But, rumor has it that he ran a 4.4 in the spring of 2014. Even if he’s in the 4.6 range in Indianapolis, that’s outstanding for a 245 edge blazer.

Surprise to watch
Obum Gwacham, Oregon State: He’s a former wide receiver that moved over to defensive end for one year. He didn’t start but was a key contributor on pass rushing downs, enough so that he got a Combine invite. He wasn’t making it to Indy as a WR. Furthermore, he was a track star in high school, having cleared 6’10” in the high jump and 48 feet in the triple jump and he was a member of the Oregon State track team. He could be real fun to watch at Indianapolis.

Linebackers
Combine superstar
Alvin ‘Bud’ Dupree, Kentucky: Ask most scouts which player has the most ‘buzz’ heading into his individual workout and the response you’d get most often is Dupree. At 6’4” and nearly 260 pounds, Dupree can run in the 4.5 range, with a 38+ inch vertical, and he broad jumped nearly 11 feet in the spring of 2014. I, like most, have been waiting for two years to see his show in Indianapolis.

Surprise to watch
Alani Fua, BYU: He was a 6’5” volleyball player at Oaks Christian HS so I’m going on the assumption that he’s going to sky during the vertical jump. He’s packed on weight up to 235 pounds so seeing a player that light on his feet explode upward is fun to watch. He’s not on a lot of people’s radar screen, so I’ll put him in this surprise category.

Defensive backs
Combine superstar
Ronald Darby, Florida State: Pure speed is his game. He ran a 4.37 in high school, not to mention, he was a member of the gold medal-winning USA medley relay at the 2011 World Youth Championships. Similar to the WR group, Darby and the DB athletes will shine on the last day of the Combine.

Surprise to watch
P.J Williams, Florida State: Okay, most people may already know Williams as he’s not much of a surprise, but he put a Vine video on his Instagram page showing his 11’+ broad jump in training last week (best of last nine combines is 11.7’). He’s a cornerback that I’ve said I’d move to safety but he’s got all the physical tools a next level DB should possess. He’ll blaze the 40 yard track, as well, as he was clocked in the low 4.4 range earlier in his college career. 6’, 196 running a 4.4 who can hit 11’ in the broad jump?

Yeah, sign me up.

Do you know if those heights are rounded, Playoffs? I find it hard to believe that every single guy is measuring in exactly on the inch.

6005 = 6'0" +5/8ths, 6036 = 6'3" +6/8ths

Do you know if those heights are rounded, Playoffs? I find it hard to believe that every single guy is measuring in exactly on the inch.
That's what they gave us. Will update when they update.

any thoughts on John Crockett RB? I like him a lot. What round? He is ranked day three from what I can find.

Green-Beckham weighed in at 6-5, 237 yet his hands are the same size (9') as Kaelin Clay (5-10, 195) and Rashad Greene (5-11, 182). That's a bit odd.

Two guys killing team interviews...

QB Marcus Mariota giving teams the Russell wilson vibe,

20 year old TE Maxx Williams. 6'4", 250, 10 3/8" hand.

QB Bryce Petty says he didn't have actual play calls until Senior Bowl; used signal system at Baylor. #NFLCombine

South Carolina RB Mike Davis came out early bc his mother got an eviction notice on her door. Said "I knew it was time for me to come out."

Not a surprise on Mariota. He was always going to kill it in interviews.

Not a surprise on Petty either. One of my main issues with Griffin was that he had no experience with playcalling. Briles does all the pre-snap stuff from the sideline. Griffin/Petty just throw it where they're told to throw it.

Scherff says his 1-rep max in hang clean is 480 lbs!! Here's video of him doing 3 reps of 443: http://bit.ly/1Dx800Y

Ogbuehi has a good vibe... similar to Duane Brown...

he's always reminded me of him, extremely athletic. he struggled at LT this year though. not clear if it was coaching (a&m OL coach was replaced after the season) or personal limitations, but I think he could be a great RT or even guard in the right scheme, with the ability to learn and switch to LT with time.

I think Jarvis Harrison is a guard to watch out for. Underrated prospect on the line, kind of like Patrick Lewis (also at A&M) was. He's good depth at the very least, early day 3 pick with the opportunity to force his way into day 2 with a solid combine.

Rey has spoken about Winston potentially having a weight problem in the past, and I think it's something that needs to be monitored. I don't expect him to balloon up, but I do expect him to gmhave his weight up around 250 when he plays. He's elusive enough at that weight.

I know it's still early in the process but I've been scouting every week like usual and figured I would share my thoughts...
First Round Grade
...
12. Dante Fowler – OLB, Florida* 6-2 261
13. Jake Fisher – OT, Oregon 6-6 299
14. A.J. Cann – OG, South Carolina 6-3 318
...
I think it's important to note that this is how I personally rate and value the prospects, not where I think the consensus rates them or in what order I think they will get drafted.

yeah I've been pushing Fisher for a time also, dude is amazing. I cannot find any record of him giving up a sack for at least two seasons including the year he came off injury which should have made him susceptible.
