2005 Running Backs: A Buyer's Market

Vinny

shiny happy fan
Shaun Alexander, Anthony Thomas, LaMont Jordan, Edgerrin James and Rudi Johnson are on track to become free agents and there are other situations around the league that may lead to some RB shuffling this off season. I'm sure Travis Henry will be moved, and the Vikings or Chiefs could unload Bennett or Johnson. The bottom line is that this isn't going to be a bad year if you are looking for a back.

If Shaun Alexander does indeed become a free agent after the season, he will find himself in what seems to be becoming a very crowded backfield.

The Seahawks' ace tailback is among a handful of good running backs whose contracts end in March, and a few more ballcarriers could be available in trades, in addition to the talented runners who will be available in the draft.

The teams in most obvious need of starting backs are the Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. If Alexander, Indianapolis' Edgerrin James and Cincinnati's Rudi Johnson become free agents as scheduled, their teams will need replacements, too.

Alexander and James figure to be the marquee free agents at the position, and Johnson, the Bengals' top tailback, also is in the final year of his contract.

But the real competition for starting spots could come from free agents Anthony Thomas of the Chicago Bears and LaMont Jordan of the New York Jets.

Right now, if I were the Texans I would NOT go for alexander or James...Paying a lot for high mileage players, but would try to figure out which one the Jordan, R.Johnson, D. rhodes that i like the best and could get a decent price and have an open competition for the spot with the three that are here or plan on the dreaded committe

I really like the idea of maybe picking up Travis Henry. He's young and healthy (I believe) and a great talent. What kind of options would we be looking at to go for him?

That is good news. We might not have to use a draft pick on one.

IMO Davis and Wells are not long-term solutions at HB. I think Hollings could be a big threat, but I wonder if he is more of a complementary back rather than a primary one. He is the only back we have that is still a question mark for me.

I think we need to be very careful that we don't overspend for a RB in FA. If we get outbid, so be it. I heard an interesting stat, that once a RB hits 27, most are over the hill. That makes drafting one the best bargain. By the same token, if we can get a decent young back without giving up the farm, then I'm all for it.

I think the best bet would be to draft a RB. You get a young back, for little money. And maybe he can take over after a year on the sidelines.

Good info.

In addition to the free agents, I believe will be a good year for RBs in the draft this year.

I don't think we can wait another year for a good running back if we want to go to the playoffs. If we get one out of the draft we need him come out and step up to the plate, and be ready to do alot of running. I would love to see Cadillac Williams come out and have a big year or even Cedric Benson.

I'm not a real big college football fan so i want to know what other RB's yall would think might do good as a starting rookie for the Texans.

unless we draft one of the top tier running backs, I would love to see us sign Anthony Thomas. He is a big strong running back and he could probably be signed cheaper than Alexander or James. Thomas is also from Winnfield, Louisiana so perhaps it would be easier to convince him to play closer to home.

Here is a link to his bio on the Bears website, LINK

Thomas has no breakaway speed whatsoever... A little better version of Stacey Mack. No thanks.
