1972 Dolphins Undefeated Season

The Dolphins had a easy schedule in 1972. Only 5 of their 14 games involved opponents who ended up winning more games than they lost (against other teams), and those opponents' records were hardly impressive: 8-5, 7-6, 7-5, 8-5. Miami faced only one non-division opponent that year (Kansas City) who finished higher than third in their own division. They played the Oilers(1-13) once and Patriots (3-11) twice.

They did beat the good teams to get to and win the SB but I think the undefeated season is overrated.
 
I don't think it's overrated. They can't help who's on their schedule. And they still have to play the games. If it's overrated, why has it only been done one time? :rolleyes:

Whatever no need to roll eyes here dude. I just wanted to bring the topic up for discussion.

The Dolphin opponent winning percentage was .375


I doubt that the 1972 Miami team would have remained undefeated against stronger competition, but they likely would have won the championship that year in any case, since their division was extremely weak, and they did beat the stronger teams in all their playoff games.


They had a 14 game regular season that isn't around anymore. The fact is they had a weak schedule that year. Maybe overrated was to strong of a word to use.......

Yeah it's not gonna be done again either since the NFL went to 16 regular season games in 1978.

It doesn’t mean they weren’t a great team. It doesn’t mean they weren’t the best team ever. But it goes a long way to explaining why the Dolphins in that particular year ran the table. The 1972 season was a rare time when a great team had an easy schedule and only 14 regular season games.

Just 2 more games? Come on in the NFL "just" 2 games is huge. Especially when you have teams that went 15-1. Honestly(off-topic) I wish we had an 18 game season with only 2 pre-season games.

IMO the only thing lamer than the 72 Dolphins breaking out the bubbly when the last undefeated team loses, is busting on the 72 Dolphins for winning all of their games that year!

It's part of football history, to be celebrated. I think they've remained a class act after all these years. And it's not the '72 Dolphins that make a big deal about it. It's everyone else that holds them up in such high regard, and rightfully so, IMO.

IIRC, the 1985 Bears were the only team that got close to an undefeated season (went 12-0 before losing).

The 1984 49ers and 2004 Steelers went 15-1, but the 49ers went 6-0 before their one loss to the Steelers that year. And the 2004 Steelers lost in the playoffs.

The 1985 Bears one loss? The Miami Dolphins. :)
 
the broncos hit 13-0 in 98 before getting beaten by the giants......i was at that game, i remember it well

yep, and they went 14-2 for the season, IIRC. I didn't include them (but probably should have) as I was only considering teams that went 15-1 for the regular seasons.

Even though I usually root againts the Colts, being a division rival and all, I was not minding seeing a team go undefeated in the current era. It would have been cool to see a team from my generation do it, and I'd imagine the excitement surrounding it would be tremendous.
