1/4 Mark of 2011 Season Mock Draft

Gota get a feel how people see things shaping up, what better way than to begin this process as Texans roll into what could be their first playoff run in franchise history. No sense in resting on our laurels now, so lets keep this thing going. Shocking I still went defensive early, yeah I know they're doing so well too. Also despite the outstanding effort & work of the OL I still see a need to address this with two picks as well. Injury's are a concern & without quality back-up OL/DL players Rick/Kubiak stand a chance of losing everything they worked so hard to attain, if a starter/key players become injured & taken out of the game in key situations.

First Round: Alameda Ta’amu, NT, Washington, 6024 336

NFL two gap nose tackle. Size, strength, temperament. Only sure fire starting NT in this draft adds great interest around the league to 3-4 teams easily helping push his stock into the first round. Cody may fit in Wade Phillips system & I must admit he had done admirably so far but the middle of Texans run defense is still suspect, by having a true beast to disrupt blocking schemes, he would keep the LB’s clean, eliminating those frustrating medium length gains.

Second Round: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers, 6020 215

Playmaker can play the slot, outside, in the backfield or across the middle. Athletic, powerful RB build with outstanding leaping ability & red zone proficiency. Can also return on special teams, improving route runner can plant & cut on breaks, second gear, and excellent hands/ball control. Gives Texans a legit #2 WR without breaking the bank.

Third Round: Kevin Zeitler, OT/OG, Wisconsin, 6034 322

Excellent pulling guard with tackle pass-pro skills. Experience across the line. Gives Texans immediate starter @ RG & someone who can flex to tackle if needed for depth purposes. Every teams needs an OL like him for this reason.

Fourth Round: Chris Galippo, ILB, USC, 6016 252

Cushing clone. Very sound fundamentals with elite quickness/recognition skills & strong. This would round out Texans ILB’s with a strong group for the long haul, Cushing, DeMeco, Sharpton & Galippo.

Fifth Round: Brett Roy, OLB, Nevada 6030 280

Plays DT for Wolf Pack but projects to 5 tech DE in the NFL. High motor guy like Watt, really pressures the QB a lot with his hands in the air, never quitting on plays. Jamison is developing nicely, was a dynamic player too @ Michigan but he is more a sub for Antonio while Roy would be a back-up for Watt.

Sixth Round: Cody Johnson, FB, Texas, 5110 250

Vickers has been a bust & I miss Vonta Leach. Red zone efficiency base is a sound, solid power running attack in short spaces. Arian could use some help up close & if he can’t go Cody has made a living in short yardage situations.

Seventh Round: Grant Garner, C, Oklahoma State, 6030 290

Meyers has been both durable & steady. This is a developmental pick to groom behind him since every guy who tries to fill his back-up slot seems to get injured or cut. Texans are a little thin here so it’s a good idea to invest in a quality person who can someday be a starter.

Don't know much about the prospects. Positions seem to tick the boxes though.

I must say have to love a lineman out of wisconsin, just feels right. Oh, those and TEs.

1. Ta'amu, I really like this pick it just makes so much sense for the Texans and he's #1 on my mock as well.

2. Sanu, not familiar with him but I'm warming up to taking a WR in the 2nd. I like Dwight Jones though.

3. Zeitler, love this pick but he may not be available here, he could go much earlier.

4. Galippo, I like the player and a good position choice. I like Kevin Reddick-ILB in the 4th and have Galippo going later.

5. Roy, I'm not familiar with him but at 280 lbs. he's to big for OLB and to small for 3-4 DE. His size just doesn't fit either position.

6. Johnson, not familiar with him but I like the position choice and line of thinking.

7. Garner, again I'm not familiar with him but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a C on the PS. He'd better add some weight and be able to play OG as well if he's going to stick around waiting to take Myers spot.

The best thing about this mock is there are no TE's or CSU players. Some good picks.

So hard to do a mock right now - I have no idea where the Texans will be picking .... So much depends upon the next three weeks without AJ (If he comes back at all).

I really like Ta'amu as well .... will he be around when they pick ?

Beer - Where do you have them picking to get Ta'amu in the first ? He might end up being a top 10 pick .... top half of the 1st easily.

I like what I am seeing BL.

Ta'amu- After being a huge proponent of his prior to the season, the only game in which I have been able to watch him extensively Ta'amu did not look good. Now, you cant damn a prospect because of one game, so I need to watch some more film, but I am a little low on Ta'amu. Especially since his value will be higher than it should be due to his position, and the lack of players at said position.

Sanu! Good pick. Like I said on badboy's mock, there are a lot of receivers that have the talent to go early. We should know who should be going where in the next couple months.

I like Zeitler a lot as well. Can never go wrong with one of those Wisconsin OL.

Galippo is solid as well, but my mid round ILB is Kendricks from California. I little shorter, but the dude can hit.

Dont know a lot about Roy, but I like getting a backup to Watt.

I dont think FB is a need. Casey has proven to be a good starter, and I think that the return of Foster has shown that our earlier short-yardage woes were due to his absence. That said, if I were inclined to draft a FB, Johnson would be my guy.

Backup OC is an excellent idea.

20's is usual for premier player @ this (NT) position. Last year Phil Taylor went 21st, 2010 Dan Williams 26th, with BJ Raji the exception 9th (elite blue chip talent).

JJ Watt came to Wisconsin @ 265 & finished badger career with playing weight of 285-87, heck Antonio Smith combine came into the NFL 6033 274 & he was drafted in the 5th rd.

If you watched Watt play in College what you noticed is he lived in the backfield. His numbers were impressive too 2009 15.5 tackles for loss & 4.5 sacks. Even better 2010 21 tackles for loss & 7 sacks. Last year Roy had 14.5 TFLs and 8.0 sacks & from watching his style of play he is very similar.

Enjoyed the thread. As stated I like Ta'amu but want to see more of him to compare versus Poe. If I can get a long time starter, I'd prefer to do so.

Like your info on Sanu and hope I can watch him soon to compare to Wright.

Sanu is quite different from Wright. Very physical presence that Kubiak could move anywhere to create mis-match. Wright is more of pure vertical threat to stretch the field.

A great mock. A few disagreements, but all your choices are sound.

1. I think we are on the same page here. At this point, a big boy like Ta’amu, would help the run D tremendously. Need to see how he does down the season, but right now, he is my choice.

2. I like the idea of WR, but am leaning towards Arizona WR Juron Criner. He is a bigger target at 6'4, has good hands, and can run with decent speed. He would be a great red zone target for Schaub. What do you think of him?

3. I get your selection, but I think ILB is of a more pressing need. Meco has not quite looked like himself this year and we could use an upgrade there. I am thinking a super sub like Arkansas LB Jerry Franklin would be a great choice. He can backup at either ILB and maybe even at OLB.

4. One thing that Htown needs to draft every year is a RB. Having a bevy of good backs is the key to this system. We all thought we were spoiled in riches this off season, but look at what has happened: Foster, Ward, and Tate have all been injured. We have had to play an undrafted rook Chris O. A guy who hits the hole hard and fast, has reasonable burst and cut ability is what we want. How about we go back to Tennessee and grab Tauren Poole?

5. I agree with you that we need some OL help. Last year we grabbed an OT, so this year I suggest a OG. A big OG with good footwork who is decent at run/pass blocking would be a solid choice. How about Brandon Washington from Miami?

6. Couldn't agree more. CJ is an old school battering ram FB who can pick up the tough short yardage or be the battering ram to our RB. Vickers blows.

7. The 3-4 is all about OLB and getting pressure. How about another high motor OLB? Adrian Robinson, OLB, Temple is a high motor guy who got 13 sacks 2 years ago. Last year was a down year, but if anyone can turn him around it would be Wade.

Oh yeah, I agree but you seem to be looking for a physical type that can power thru a tackle sort of like a Walter. I want a WR that has good hands, makes difficult catches and speed, speed and more speed to go deep & maybe can take it to the house. I want to see if Sanu is better for Texans at what he does or is Wright? The latter projects out to 21 TDs and over 2,000 yards!

That is the question, who better fits Kubiak's ideal profile for a #2 WR? Walter is not a good comparable either, he is more a utility WR who blocks, makes tough catches & runs flat routes. Sanu is a playmaker who can create, elevate & beat double teams.

Not doubting yo but what I want to see. What is his speed? He seems more of a 2o yard from scrimmage guy. Am I wrong?

Only two game later (two losses) I'm ready to look @ CB over a big cornerstone 3-4 nose tackle. maybe push position to 2nd? Texans biggest hole is opposite Joseph. This is disappointing & frustrating with all picks/money/coaching invested. On the positive if this defense is only one player/position (CB2) away from being elite they are headed in the right direction. So with that said here is my new first round target for the Texans:

First Round: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina, 6010 194

Same school as Dunta Robinson, Jonathan Joesph & yes Bob McNair. Has proto-typical NFL size for a corner who can match up with bigger #1 WR's. Has fluid hips, back peddle & good use of hands. Most importantly he closes fast & has the long speed to run off the hip of receiver. http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gilmore_stephon01.html I'm not one to kick a player(s) when their down but I'm sick of seeing this team lose because of huge cushions on the perimeter, inability to challenge for balls up for grabs & not having long speed to cover nobody's. We're only kidding ourselves if we think the answer resides on this roster.

Hayward is a stud. Three year starter with good size, good speed, ball skills, and he can tackle.

On top of all that, he shows up when it matters. 3 of his 5 picks this year were against the two best QBs he has faced so far.

I like Hayward as well. I think he's listed by Walterfootball as a 2nd round pick but stats like that could easily move him into the 1st round. Are you thinking CB is our highest priority in the 2012 draft? 1st round pick?

I watched Johnson (FB) play for the first time this weekend and I came away impressed. Originally I didn't care for drafting a FB there, but he is a guy that could legitimately platoon with Casey.

I think Vickers is better than what most people think, but the Johnson kid blocks extremely well...

Cody actually played very well against Oklahoma St, easily his best game since he got moved to FB.

I'd like to see some consistency before I change my mind on him though. That's what the book has been on him. He'll look great for a game and then look like trash for the next few.

Wolf, the Three Amigos have been debating on players to include on our next mock posting. We believe that NT, WR2 and CB2 are priority with need for Oline depth and a FB coming sometime later.

The difficulty this early comes in deciding not only what round to pick the need but will a player actually be there. It is simple to say grab a corner like Claiborne in first but he is rated everywhere from #1 CB to around 5-6. Personally, I do not see him @ #23 where I have us selecting. I am big on Hayward and have him on my board as a high second. So if I want him I have to reach for him in first. If I go Ta'amu over Poe @ NT will Ta'amu be there #23? Does Jacoby Jones' seemingly being resurrected indicate permanence or will he revert to inconsistent play as ALWAYS? Even if he plays next 10 games as he did against Ravens, I'm still considering a WR no later than round 3.

As you know from your own well researched mocks, you can't just look at 10 corners or WRs and say well his stats look good, I'll go with him. We have seen others do that but Beerlover, Rmartin 65 & I don't do that. We all have seen the mocker that copies exactly what Walter projects. That's not so cool especially when credit not given.

To summarize & answer your question, I have ideas but not locked into CB in first round.

Any thoughts on this guy in 6th round?

Chad Diehl, FB, Clemson
Height: 6-2. Weight: 265.
Projected 40 Time: 4.79.
Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.
8/22/11: Chad Diehl is a powerful lead blocker. He has the ability to run over defenders and blast open holes for running backs. Diehl is not much of a runner or receiver. Over three seasons, he has a total of seven receptions for 39 yards with five carries for eight yards. Diehl has to be a dominant blocker in 2011 to get drafted.

I am not so demanding that our FB can catch and run for a first but like the idea of a 265lb guy bulldozing thru tacklers to get 3-4 and either a First or a TD. I am not a proponent of passing inside the 10 yard line. We have seen how that ends up more than once.

Oh trust me I understand, I've been flip flopping all around about what order to take players in. Here's what I've come up with and I hope it helps yall. In my mock I'm going NT in the 1st round, Alameda Ta'amu, instead of CB which we all agree is a major need as well. If we take CB in the 1st round and are selecting around #23 then we are likely to get the 4th or 5th best CB since they are so valued and several will go before us, we're not getting the top talent. If we go NT in the 1st round then we're likely to get the #1 rated talent at the position, Ta'amu. Also we already have some developmental CB's in the pipeline/depth in KJ, Harris, Carmichael, McCain, McManis, etc... at NT we only have Earl Mitchell as developmental depth and we all know that he's undersized for our liking. We also have a new defensive coaching staff for the CB's and it seems to be paying off, KJ and McCain are both playing better this year while Harris is developing. At CB there's at least reason for hope with our existing players/depth and new coaching staff, at NT there's a new staff as well but there's only an undersized Mitchell that doesn't seem to be getting any better. Also there's the old adage that you always build a team through the trenches first, you have to have a foundation before you can hang the curtains. I'd like a 1st round CB as much as the next guy but NT just make more sense at this time. Realistic mocks seem to get alot harder the better your team is and the lower you select. Which ever position goes first I at least have faith that we'll be getting better defensive talent in every round due to having a better defensive coaching staff that seems to be able to evaluate talent correctly unlike Smith/Bush/Kubiak.

Another, hurdle to clear this early is evaluation of underclassman who will declare for the draft that are actually ready to make the jump? Case in point the best db's all seem to be Juniors, for example Kareem didn't make his decision until the last hour. Most will probably declare if given a high grade by the NFL advisory board (both Claiborne & Gilmore would fall into this camp) so it becomes a business decision. Texans rolled the dice with Kareem & seemed to have missed which is the nature of the beast but I really think they focused on the wrong measureables more than anything. The minute he ran a surprising 4.45 @ the Combine it made up their mind, along with game film & talking to Sabin. Both of these guys have plus speed (sub 4.4) fluid hips & cut like a razor. That would trump a big wide body any day who's main job is to tie up two bodies but that's just me I suppose. Great Feedback!

Good ost. I'll pm soon.

Go ahead & rep this latest mock draft by the pros Rob Rang - http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfldraftscout-RobRang

Having Texans selecting -
17. Houston Texans
Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington: For the Texans' transition to the 3-4 defense to work effectively, the team needs to add size and strength inside at nose guard. Ta'amu lacks the foot quickness to track down ball-carriers from behind, but he holds up well to double-teams.

After strong performance against Titans, can't see them picking that low but the player/need I changed to is there @ #20 -
20. Cincinnati Bengals
Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina: You might be surprised to learn that the Bengals have one of the league's top-rated defenses. Much of the credit lies with a solid cornerback combination of veterans Leon Hall and Nate Clements. Depth behind these two is slim, however, making the talented junior Gilmore a possibility, especially as more and more teams use multiple receiver sets.

BL, I agree I don't see us picking at #17 either, I'm thinking we pick around 22-24. I like Alameda Ta'amu in the 1st round as well but the scenario listed in the mock you linked is what I fear, having to choose between the top rated NT or a quality CB. In this situation I'd go for Ta'amu but it would be a very difficult decision and is the reason rick Smith makes the big bucks. In this scenario I sure hope Phillips and the defensive coaching staff are listened to by Rick Smith, I want them making this decision for Smith. My reason for picking Ta'amu over a quality CB is the fact that we have no starter or quality depth at NT and that at CB we at least have some developmental talent/depth in KJ, Harris, Carmichael, McCain, McManis, etc... I agree WR in the 2nd round along with some quality O-line talent in the 3rd.

I moved Texans to 23 from 25 after defeat by Oakland but after Titans destruction, back to #25 (maybe lower). I think Ta'Amu is gone and the elite CBs. Poe may be there but will be a reach unless he keeps climbing charts. If so, I could switch Poe to first, leaving our mock as is. If you can't get a CB in first that will start, go for one in 2nd or 3rd.

Poe is a Junior, from what I understand he could use another year to polish. if he asks for his draft grade from NFL advisory committee he'll probably stay & finish school. For him it would be the smartest move, get his degree plus move from a 3rd rd. pick to 2nd possibly 1st.

Speaking of DT position I wonder if Jerel Worthy fits Wade Phillips system? He is not your huge space eater, more of a one gap penetrator but he does draw double teams because he is so disruptive. He is a rock solid 6030 310 & gave a pro caliber Wisconsin line fits this last Saturday in Michigan State victory. However I see him selected before Texans too, maybe pushing Alameda into 20's?

There basically 2 big NTs of any worth & Poe is the second & I'll be stunned if he goes lower than second round. IMO he is stronger than Ta'amu just handles himself differently.

I'm not as impressed with Worthy as some are. I watched only parts of the game against Notre Dame and he did not do well. Seemed either tired or lackadaisical, either one is not good. Probably a 2nd rounder but you will find most have him in first. He still has time to power up and he may have. I watche the game against Wisconsin but tbh focused on your guard. Worthy only had like maybe 4 tackles I think? Does have 3 sacks, I'm pretty sure but I'm not interested in him.

Speaking of NT's

How does everybody think Taylor is doing this yr? I think he's doing well.

To get a great NT you usually have to take a chance on a big guy and hope his weight doesn't blow up. (See Raji, Wilfork,Hampton etc....) Risk vs reward

My 3 guys are Ta'amu,Chapman and Fangapo. I haven't forced myself to watch a Memphis game. LOL

Sorry, Taylor who? For big guys i look historically to see if they balloon during off season.
