Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

Zabel a fav is reportedly a ZBS guard; is he option for Caley?
I wished I felt better about the offensive line.
We get this cat right here and the Oline is better immediately, imo. This is the type of dude this oline has been missing forever! Mean mofo, smart, give me your lunch money type of dude! Give me 3 of these types of dudes and SUPERB OWL!

That demeanor that you mentioned coincides with him being compared to Cody Mauch. His accolades read like just what we need until you get to the point where it says " put him in a Zone heavy system and watch him work. " We do not have a Zone heavy offense any longer.

Will Nick break his historical drafts and go small school?

I would draft Zabel because he's smart and will fit in any scheme. I doubt Caserio drafts him.

I think I'd rather bring Donovan Jackson home
More proven against elite competition.

Less risk picking Jackson. How would you feel about trading into the top of the 2nd rd for Zabel using 2026 picks after drafting Jackson at 1-26?

Tunsil/Jackson/Patterson/Zabel/Fisher would be a young talented, smart OL for the next 5-7 yrs and give Stroud the protection he needs to be successful.

I doubt he will either.

But if there was ever a time to draft 2 OL and 2 DT's in the 1st 4 rds of a draft this would be it. The DT/RB/TE positions are the strength of this draft, followed be the S position.

Fix the trenches with new blood.

I posted a Mock earlier today where I’ve selected:
LG- Donovan Jackson (Ohio State)
OT- Jack Nelson (Wisconsin)
DT- Jordan Phillips (Maryland)
DE- Ty Robinson (Nebraska)
SS- Jaylen Reed (Penn State)

Answers for the now and the future.

I wouldn't do it if I was Nick, but why not a trade of 25 and whatever to get the Bears 39 and 41? ZABEL at 39 and Jackson at 41.

Not sure that’s going to fly. Texans #25 is worth 720 pts. Bears #39 and #41 are valued at 510 and 490 which adds up to 1,000 pts.

For shites and kicks, tried to execute this trade on the PFN Simulator and was declined 4 different times.

Who would be there to entice the Bears to trade their 39 and 41 picks to move up to 25? This is in no way a challenge, just conversation.

Nothing

If you want to make sure you get 3 starter level players, trade into the 2nd using 3-89 and a 2026 2nd to move to the top of the 3rd

1.25 and "whatever it takes"...
Perhaps that is juice Scruggs or perhaps it is a third round pick from 2026. I have seen some of your trades before and thought they were pretty good and surprised you couldn't come up with one to meet that. Also, it does not have to be an exact point for point suggested on Drafttek.com

Nick plays the team for what they want/need as he did Cleveland who desperately needed a quarterback.

And yet we know that on some he is such as tankathon 2.48. Now we all know that can go up and down as the off-season progresses and most mocks end up getting it wrong.
Yeah, Jackson isn't falling to 2-48 and Arroyo isn't falling to 4-115 as some of these site have their simulators saying.

I’m not sure Scruggs moves the needle. The Bears big need is LT. Maybe Caserio offers up Tunsil (est RD1-16 Value) and their 2026 RD1 for the Bears 10 & 41 picks.

Could get the job done.

Texans pick:
010: LT- Kelvin Banks Jr (Texas)
025: WR- Emeka Egbuka (Ohio State)
041: LG- Donovan Jackson (Ohio State)
058: WR- Isaiah Bond (Texas)
089: DT- Omar Norman-Lott (Tennessee)
127: RB- Dylan Sampson (Tennessee)
167: DE- Ty Robinson (Nebraska)
243: SS- De’Rickey Wright (Vanderbilt)

Trenches and pure speed addressed.

Off-loading Tunsil via trade and Howard/Mason via the post June 1st cut route, should put the Texans at roughly 44M in (+-37M / +7M) new cap space, I could quickly justify signing LT- Alaric Jackson to fill the Tunsil void while Banks and D Jackson compete for the starting spots on the OL.

Do you not feel QBs should be in control of the offense? Would Peyton, Brady, or Brees have been the same QBs without the power to change plays at the LOS?
I believe these QB's are HOF QB's, we will see if CJ is this type of guy. Personally I want to find out because an extension is looming and if he cant handle it then they should move on. Of course you know how I think about the QB position and how it limits the team after the QB extension is signed.

On paper I'm all for it. And CJ is now a young vet. Any training wheels need to be removed and they need to release the kraken.

And as far as the rise or fall of the offense, while CJ will be the leader, there's 10 other guys out there. Let's see if the line can protect better, and if he gets a weapon or two in the draft. It's a team sport and the QB will likely get more than his fair share of the credit or the blame. So it goes...

How can you become a HOF QB without control of the offense? It's Stroud's 3rd year. If he's not ready for this, he'll never be. I think he is and giving Stroud the keys is a no brainer.
Like I said I'm on board with finding out if CJ is that guy. This may be his 3rd year but it's his first year in the new offense. Of course Stafford won a SB his first year in this offense.

You know Steelb is laying the groundwork for his typical contrarian view. Wouldn’t expect anything less at this point.
What contrarian view? I hope they let him run the offense and see how he does before they extend him. How's that contrarian?

Surely you're not going to hold 3rd year Stroud to the 13th year Stafford?
That inference is so ludicrous
Stafford was having to adjust to a new offense, same as CJ will be doing. If CJ's the top 5 QB people think he is, he should be better than Stafford.

Interesting how you have such high standards for some players (Stroud) but make excuses for others (Tunsil).

Guess you still have to justify your Stroud stance after the character assassination you went on his rookie offseason because of his agent and you missing on that draft evaluation.

Excuses? What excuses? Tunsil is a top 5-10 LT.

Where have I said anything bad about Stroud the last 2 yrs except he was part of the issue last yr. I also said the OL was a problem and CJ wasn't as good last yr as his rookie yr. (All true) I still think CJ can be a top 5 QB. But he isn't yet. He thinks he can be a top 5 QB if he gets freedom, he's going to get that freedom and I'm glad he's going get this freedom to see what he's got before they extend him. I dont understand why you're holding my missing my eval against me? It's like you either think I'm rooting for him to fail (Not true) or you're overly defensive when it comes to CJ.

It's like you want to say in one breath CJ's a top 5 QB and wasn't last yr because of his surroundings (I mostly agree with you) but now if he's not a top 5 QB then I'm hating on him? Let me ask you this, who do you think will be the better QB next yr? CJ or Stafford? If the answer is Stafford where do you rank Stafford? Because CJ would be below that and probably not play well enough to win a SB. For the record I've got CJ and Stafford about the same in the top 10ish range. That should be good enough to win a SB if the team stays healthy and the defense is as good as I think it's going to be.

When have I said CJ is a top 5 QB? He’s a young QB and damn good but i’ve never mentioned top 5.

But you have said if he doesn’t win a Super Bowl like Stafford his first year in a new system then it’s a disappointment.

You’ve also blamed every player except Tunsil for his false starts and not being a plus run blocker. CJ got plenty of blame from you for the offense this past season, and yes he did share some blame as did everybody part of that. But where was the blame for Tunsil? Just excuses from the man who proclaims no excuses.

Use that same critical lens to judge all the players the same if that’s the route you want to go. Or lighten up a bit on your criticism… even if the player might have Nigerian doctor parents ;)

Cj's still learning NFL Safety rotations.

I'd give him a check to run play, a check to quick pass, & a timeout. If he successfully uses them I'd start adding to his repertoire.

But what do I know? Probably have a new Center, LT, & RG. All learning the new system with Cj & two new receivers. What could go wrong?
