2023 East-West Shrine Bowl

The 98th East-West Shrine Bowl will be held Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 6:30PM CST on NFL Network. The Atlanta Falcons will coach this year’s East team, and the New England Patriots will coach this year’s West team.

The East squad has one of QB's that @steelbtexan likes in the late rounds - Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell. I'm interested in Fresno State RB Jordan Mims as an UDFA. TCU CB Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson could go as high as the 2nd round. He's short at 5'9" but is expected to run a high 4.2 or low 4.3 forty.

The West squad seems to have the better roster. At least, I'm more familiar with more players on the West. I like USC RB Travis Dye and Arkansas Center Ricky Stromberg on the offensive side. BC WR Zay Flowers will probably go in the 3rd round but, could be taken somewhere in the 2nd. Michigan TE Luke Schoonmaker got hurt in the one Michigan game I've watched so far, so it will be interesting to see if he is healthy or not. On the defensive side, I'll be interested to watch Penn State DT PJ Mustipher. Ohio State CB Cameron Brown will be an interesting one to watch also. Brown is 6'-0" and is supposed to run a 4.29 forty, but he sucked in coverage. It might be worth taking a flyer on him in the 6th or later. Florida Safety Trey Dean III might be a good option at SS in the 5th or so. I'd also look at Arizona Safety Christian Young at SS as and UDFA. Rutgers Safety Christian Izien is on the smaller side at 5'-10", but has 4.3 speed. Izien will most likely be an UDFA, but with the right coaching, might make a good be good covering the slot.

He's a stud, Gonna have to spend a 2nd to get him.

I wouldn't be against drafting him at 2-32 (I think he's that good) if for no other reason to see this MB lose it's collective mind. That would be truly entertaining.

Also I want to add the Texans org is a joke, from Cletus down to the waterboy.

Had my man love on him early, before hit he sustained on the sideline late Fresno State game, still maintained possession to keep Beavers hopes alive. Now he has a red flag (Combine Medicals will be critical to his draft grade).

Luke has elite measurables for position, but so do a lot more prospects these days. 6-6 250lbs. What he has shown in the frame, with excellent coaching from his TE coach Brian Wozniak. Sound fundamentally from positional platform, blocking first and foremost, then add speed and great hands, body positioning to block out DB’s, nose/reading seams/openings in coverages.

As Oregonian, I’ve only seen one TE with his skill set and that comp would be Russ Francis. Which would translate into a first round grade if, not for medical. Would have to wait and hear CloakNnndager has to say? If nothing major (which I expect) solid round 2 Grade.

I'm waiting to see what CnD's opinion is before I can make an accurate judgement.

But if healthy adding Hyatt and Musgrave would make a huge difference in this offense. Adding Achane or Prince and a vet like McKinnon with these guys and this offense could be top 15.


Gotta add a center though in either FA or the draft. Good to see Stromberg is doing well. Although this really doesn't surprise me. Stromberg at 6'3 and over 33 in arms with a wrestling background and strong as a bull is something that you can sign me up as being on board with picking him at 3-64.

I reviewed the film of the game and specifically the play in which he was injured (with 10 seconds left in the game). There have not been any official reports other than "undisclosed knee injury." But just based on film and his subsequent l toong-term unavailability, I believe he suffered a Grade III MCL rupture and a PMC (posterior medial corner) tear. This could lead to a return to play anywhere from 12-16 week (mostly dependent on the PMC injury). As long as there is no lasting knee instability, he should be fully ready to go in the 2023 season.

So far Xazavian Valladay has been the best RB for the West, and Fresno State RB Jordan Mims has looked really good for the East. West C Ricky Stromberg has had a couple good plays, but he's also had a couple pretty bad plays also.

Western Kentucky CB Kahlef Hailassie (EAST) made a good read, and would have had a pick-6 off of UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (WEST), but he dropped the ball. Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell (EAST) has been meh so far.

Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin (EAST) has been impressive. Eastern Michigan DE Jose Ramirez and Stephen F. Austin DE BJ Thompson for the EAST team have both made some good plays.

Pitt DE Habakkuk Baldonado (WEST) has flashed.

Michigan K Jake Moody has been money. He kicked two 51 yd FG's with ease.

One of the WR's I wanted to see, Zay Flowers wasn't able to play. I don't know why.

Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell was trash, and UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson wasn't much better. None of the QB's were very good.

West won 12-3.

Of the guys I was looking forward to watching:

EAST - only Fresno State RB Jordan Mims did his part. I believe Mims had 6 carries for 40 yds, and caught a couple passes. I think one of his catches went for about 20 yds. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the stats, so I'm going from memory. Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell was terrible, and TCU CB Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson either didn't play or didn't make any plays. Of course, I can't say much about the DB's because the QB's sucked.

WEST - USC RB Travis Dye, BC WR Zay Flowers, and Michigan TE Luke Schoonmaker didn't play. Arkansas C Ricky Stromberg had a couple bad plays early, but every time I saw him after that seemed positive. Penn State DT PJ Mustipher's name got called once, but I don't remember seeing him after that. Again, I can't really say much about the DB's. I think they all had pretty good coverage, but the QB were bad, so...

Thompson and Martin are now on my radar. Wonder if they will still be around in the 3rd/4th rd?
 
Tulsa RB Deneric Prince didn't impress. Arizona State RB Xazavian Valladay and Fresno State RB Jordan Mims were the obvious best RB's in this game. There was another RB that got a few carries, and looked pretty good on them, but I never caught his name or school.
