Lovie Smith Fired

Respect Lovie for taking a job that was hopeless. I am glad for him and players that they won that last game.

Spirit of competition I guess, BUT for the BETTERMENT of this franchise....... and fans....... We needed that loss.

Thats trremendous draft capital we lost. Now he cant get another job knowing what he did yesterday. Sticking it to management inturns stuck it to the fan base.

A franchise that cant fill 1/2 of its stadium.

All the most recent hires that have been good around the league are young hungry guys and the Texans hire back to back old dudes that had no business getting the job. Then they fire them after one year and cost themselves a boatload of money in the process.
Well Maybe the Texans had to waste two seasons because of the Watson allegations and couldn’t trade him when they wanted to???

Because no one was taking that job before Culley.

Says who? He's making a great living coaching soon to be nfl qbs. Is he at the level Whitfield is or was? No, but there were alot of people in nfl circles who didn't think much about what Whitfield was doing early either.
None of Avery’s QBs are doing well None

Since 2011 the NFL Teams that have one-and-done a coaching hire. Looks like we're tied with Cleveland and San Francisco at 2 times for the lead. For now...

I owned a daycare and had to suspend my sister once and then fire her. I didn't ask the manager to do it, i did because I hired her when I 1st started it, not the manager. I'm not saying the manager wouldn't have done it, but as the owner and the top dog, I wasn't going to have someone do something I knew had to be done for the betterment of the entire business. Caserio is spineless in my opinion and he has shown it many times. Look at how Lovie had to answer questions about the botched Cook trade. Where was Carsterio? Head in the sand and hiding hoping it would go away.
There is firing someone and the act of firing someone. I don't think the dispute was the physical act of firing TK. It is that Culley didn't want him fired and wanted to keep him as his OC.

Um Tim Kelly was fired along with Culley…..
Correct. My comment was about Culley not wanting to fire TK. People are acting like Culley was fired because he didn't want to perform the physical act of saying "You're fired." Culley was fired because he didn't want TK fired at all. It wouldn't have mattered who said "You're fired". It isn't as if Culley said "Okay, you want him gone then you fire him. That's fine with me" Please read the post I was responding to. They are acting like Culley was fired because of insubordination for not wanting to be the hatchet man. When in reality Culley was fired because no matter who actually did the firing, Culley didn't want it to happen.

When I read Caserio was staying and getting a third chance to screw up the HC hire in a row I quit caring again in the blink of an eye. I’m not unreasonable about this. I understand Cal is the owner and he’s not going anywhere. I just don’t get letting this guy (Caserio) continue to guide this mess as it gets worse every year he’s here. This needed to be a clean-house moment and instead it’s just rinse and repeat.
If Lovie was a Caserio hire I would agree with you.

This is hard to say due to the doozies that have led the Houston Texans since inception, however, Lovie is my absolute least favorite HC to stand on our sidelines. Yes.....I dislike him even more than O'Brien.

That's harsh. I'd rather have another year of Lovie than somehow another year of OB.

But, they're both history now. We'll have to wait on who we argue over next, I doubt they'll hire anyone quickly.

Why, love him or hate him, BOB won games.

I can feel some optimism, good draft capital, good cap space, some young players started to grow up, and a chance for a nice caching trio headed by Gannon. Not sure I will feel good for long because these boys will take too long then settle on Leslie Frazier

Personally.... I'm all for bringing in Aaron Glenn as our head coach. Dude was easily one of the best CBs we ever had, has always seemed like a top notch guy and I have never heard of any bad blood between him and the organization. Also, it is a name I haven't heard thrown around so why not....
Glenn is the Lions DC and might be on the verge of getting fired. When he was here, he was one of my favorite players. But I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe he's ready to be a HC.

Among the reasons for Smith’s dismissal and concerns expressed by sources about Smith’s management style: not being receptive to suggestions and feedback regarding strategy, scheme, practice routines and the use of analytics and other data to inform decisions.

Communication within the building had deteriorated dramatically.

“Lovie would meet with players, but he would never use any of our suggestions and ideas,” a Texans player said. “It was bad. We wanted to be heard, and he ignored what we had to say. It was very frustrating. Talking with him became a waste of our time.”

Smith didn’t implement suggestions from staff, and kept a close counsel instead of embracing an interactive approach with several departments and subprograms in the building.
Smith was hired after a coaching search a year ago that drifted between former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores as he sued the Dolphins, the NFL, Texans and Denver Broncos alleging discrimination and unfair hiring practices, former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, a favorite of former executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby who nearly landed the job, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who interviewed twice, and Smith.

“Ultimately, Lovie was a bad hire,” a source said. “He’s a good man and a good coach. It was just a poor fit.”

Smith, 64, was characterized as an old-school coach who was as advertised in terms of applying a hard-nosed and hard-working approach to the game, but was unwilling to adapt his patented and outdated Tampa Cover 2 scheme despite its predictability.

“Nick Caserio and I spoke with Lovie Smith tonight and informed him that we will be moving in a different direction as an organization,” McNair said in a prepared statement. “I appreciate Coach Smith and his entire family for their contributions over the last two seasons. We are grateful for his leadership and character, and we wish him the best moving forward.

“While we understand the results have not been what we had hoped for, we are committed to building a program that produces long-term, sustainable success. Our fans and city deserve a team that they can be proud of. I will work alongside Nick Caserio throughout this process and I’m confident we will find the right leader for our football team.”

A highly respected Eagles defensive coordinator Gannon ranks as a top candidate the Texans’ wish list for a potential new head coach with mutual interest between the Cleveland native and former Louisville safety and an organization bereft of a solution at head coach, according to multiple league sources.

Several league sources have labeled Gannon as a top candidate for the Texans’ potential opening after he made a strong impression during his interviews with the Texans last season.

Gannon could possibly assemble an experienced staff with his connections to former Colts coach Frank Reich and Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer and Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson.

Gannon interviewed with the Texans, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings during the last hiring cycle.

Gannon “knocked it out of the park” and “crushed” his meetings with NFL teams, impressing them with his knowledge, creativity, detailed plans about strategy and staff and his passion for the game, according to league sources.

One member of an NFL search committee said of Gannon: “He knows the answer before you even ask him the question.”

One NFL executive described Gannon as having some similarities to Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley 2.0. Staley and Gannon are close friends who grew up competing against each other in youth sports in Ohio.

“Incredibly intelligent and passionate,” a source said of Gannon. “This guy is a superstar. He’s worked with great people like George Paton and Rob Brzezinski with the Vikings. It says a lot that those guys think the world of the guy.”

So the Texans are NOT the only team to fire 1 and done coaches in back to back years.

What sucks if Stroud has a good combine we might miss the chance to get him.
Hey man there may be a now unknown QB emerge sometime during the pro-days & Combine cycle as the hottest QB in this years Draft, who knows ?

Caserio should have gotten a pink slip along with Lovie for many reasons...last one being that he botched the #1 pick. But even before that, he earned a pink slip.

It has been said that Stingley was Lovie’s pick.

And I wouldn’t say Stingley is going to be a bust, just that Gardner was the smarter pick.

After yesterday...ditto. I hope Lovie doesn't mind retirement. After that FU to the team and fans on the way out the door, good luck finding another job.
