Week 18 - Texans vs Colts: The Holding #1 pick all season until the end Bowl?

Chicago has Fields. It would be a huge shock if they take a QB unless it’s to move him post draft which actually isn’t a terrible idea.
Fields has been worse than Mills, Fields is one step above being a backup. I say if you have the chance to improve your QB play, you do it. 16 fumbles and 11 INTs.

Knowing and understanding Cal the way I do I would not be surprised if Cal told Lovie his job was secure for another year if he won today's game. :sarcasm:

This is the second year in a row Lovie's team has had a late season surge. He needs to get these surges started earlier.

Or, maybe Lovie is so damn smart he's just getting the team used to it to be ready for the playoffs when they get there in ten years. Oh, but wait, I forgot this is the AFC South, Lovie will be there in two years.

66 QBs started NFL games this season. I believe that is an NFL record. And that doesn’t include today.

(these measurements are from Football Reference)
6’2”, 238 lb. Dak Prescott missed 5 games this year.
6’2”, 225 lb. Jimmy Garropolo missed 6 games.
6’2”, 212 lb. Lamar Jackson missed 5 games.

Guess what? QBs of all shapes and sizes get hurt and miss games. So if you’re taking players off the board because of size, well, that really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
What makes more sense is how well players at the skill positions learn to avoid the serious injury which end seasons or careers.

So you agree the NFL isn't protecting QBs to the extent being implied?

I concur

I don’t blame Mills for this season but I’m not necessarily a fan of this answer. He should be ready to compete regardless.
At minimum, he proved to be an upper-tier backup in my mind. Obviously, not a great season overall. But we had the worst roster in the NFL on the offensive side of the ball: Pierce missed a bunch of games, No RB2, No WR1 or WR3, Collins missed a bunch of action, below-average TEs and poor middle line protection. Unfortunately, I don't think Mills did enough to not draft a QB @ #2. But, winning 3 division road games is decent. He'll get another chance to start somewhere again, even if it takes a little time with another organization. Until then, a great backup option to have. Caserio did well with this pick, for the 3rd round. Seems to pick well on Day 2.

Does Chicago understand the difference between an exciting QB and a good QB? Justin Fields sure didn't help the Bears win football games.

The 2nd question is do the Bears think that Fields can become an actual good QB over just an interesting piece?

The last question is, can the Bears get some team that will pay them significant assets for exciting Justin who might turn into a good QB Justin?

Fields is irrelevant if the Bears truly believe they can dramatically improve their QB play. Eberflus did not draft Fields. Out of desperation, Matt Nagy did. Trading an arm and leg with the Giants to move up to take Fields. Eberflus may want his own QB. With the worst record in the NFL with Fields, the pressure is now on Eberflus. He may not be ready to continue to ride someone else's mistake.

The New York Giants traded its first-round selection (11th overall) to Chicago in exchange for first- and fifth-round selections (20th and 164th overall), alongside their 2022 first and fourth-round selections.

They would face a lot of backlash for trading him. Unless he requests it. Even then the Bears would take a PR hit. They aren’t getting rid of him at least not yet.
I think the backlash is they finished with the worst record in the NFL with him. What has he done to gain any favor with Bears fans?

IMO no PR hit to take if they go QB and let the better QB have the position.

IF they see Fields as their future, trade back.

If they are unsure about him as their future.... draft QB and sharpen one off the other as they complete.

Again. Mulugheta is not letting that happen.

If I had to make a bet on what Eberflus will do, I would bet that Eberflus is done with Matt Nagy's Justin Fields and will draft his own QB. Especially after having the #1 pick in the draft.
If they draft a QB with that many holes good luck to them.

Let's not give oxygen to the revisionist history on Wilson to make Young look better. Wilson is and always was built more solidly than Young. It's just a fact. Doesn't mean you don't take Young necessarily. He will always be an injury risk, so that's just something you need to accept if you pick him.

The media narrative is already that he has no help.
So, in 2 years in 27 games started, Justin Fields has a comp % of less than 60%, has 21 INTs, has fumbled 28 times and pff.com has him rated as the 36th best passing QB out of 38 QBs graded. A runner he is a passer he is not.

I keep reading how everyone wants to “clean house”.

Firing everyone is easy. Hiring people to replace them is the catch. Who, in their right mind, would want to come here that you would consider to be an upgrade over who is there now? This isn’t a draft. It’s not as if Casserio has dibs over the other 31 teams. He’s scraping the bottom of the barrel.

If you only really knew....but you are entitled to believe what you want but the last time I checked, Mulugheta did not own the Bears, was not the Bears GM, and was not the Bears HC. Bears org may be glad to get rid of Fields in order to get rid of Mulugheta. Sorry Mulugheta does not have that kind of control or authority.

Actually it would make sense that smaller QBs would get hurt more than bigger players.

At the heart of the draft and combine is measuring players based on size - even hand size.

So yes it makes sense to take a player off the board due to size.

Well all I can say is all the people that b*tched about Lovie playing for the tie in the first game against the Colts should have been careful what they wished for.

For the first time ever I was praying for the Texans regular fourth quarter choke and look what I got.
I didn’t really care if they won or lost, but I hadn’t been that entertained watching the Texans 4th Qtr in a minute

Well, there was the Cowboy game & they Burkheaded that one

It will not matter at this point. As things currently stand, the Texans will have a choice between Anderson and Carter. I'd bet on it being Anderson.
does Your opinion change if Loveys gone? As of now if one of those two blow up the combine (very possible) Chicago might decide he’s to good to pass up and we will still have the choice of taking Young or trading down.

JMO we aren’t ready for our QB yet. This is basically year two of this rebuild. So many holes still to fill. I want to accumulate as many top draft picks as possible. Gather as much talent as possible over the next two drafts.

I’m not even saying take him off the board, just draft accordingly. All things being equal he can play but his size… I’m thinking bottom of 1st early 2nd

factoring draft hype, unless he screws up the pre draft process I’m thinking upper middle 1st.

I agree. It really goes against the grain for me to pull for the Colts to beat the Texans. In my head I wanted the Texans to lose but not in my heart I guess because I was still screaming & cussing Mills for the damn interceptions.

Those photos posted by CnD really have the appearance of a weight room freak. Testing for steroids began in 1989, I believe, but we know college athletes got around this. Brian Cushing is an example we are all familiar with. Muscle mass is heavier than ordinary body mass. If he weighed only 204 pounds with all that muscle ... ?

I have consistently commented that Young may be/appears small boned. I'm just waiting for the combine, but if he comes in at 190+, it will be all for the good.

Considering Eberflus is a first time HC. Does he even have control of the game day roster? Far less, draft control?

My gut says if the Bears are not drafting a QB, they will trade #1 to team who will. Unfortunately the Texans do not share your accumulation of draft capital philosophy. I do. I subscribe to the Johnson and Belichick philosophy of the team with the most draft picks win. Both Caserio and Lovie have shown a propensity to burn draft capital to move up for some ordinary talent. Like a #3 WR or a mediocre LB.

Mulugheta's Jedi mind tricks only work on the Texans.

Wrong. Fields has been a dynamic playmaker second half of the year. No way in hell Chicago drafts a QB at 1.1 unless they have some trickery up their sleeves.

There's no way Chicago passes up a QB at #1. Imagine watching film of Bryce Young while your QB is Fields, who is backup tier. Sure they have holes to fill, but they have 7 rounds per year to draft for those. Having your pick of any QB is a rare opportunity.

I think this will happen. I think they will go with Stroud though.

How many times was Bryce young hurt in 2021 and 2022? He will be in the NFL but the Texans offensive line was better as a unit than Bryce young's offensive line this season. Texans running back Pierce was better than Young's coworker. Cooks and Collins were as good or better than 'bama's.

The comparison then goes to what is added to help Young [if he's the pick] in 2023. Yes, he could be injured but so was Watson.

If Young is no good, why do so many other teams get associated with selecting Young if he becomes available; more specifically trade up to have the privilege?

I don't think many teams will trade up to get a QB for #1. I could see the Colts doing it though. But will it be for Young??

Unless the Bears commit to Jalen Carter or Will Anderson, they'll take the 2 1sts, 2 2nds and 2 3rds (as a starting bid) to jumpstart their rebuild. Fields is a good young QB but needs a lot of help. There are enough teams with QB needs that someone's gonna pay that bounty - I wouldn't be shocked if a few teams that are drooling over those two prospects to trade up anyways. Both of them are franchise-type players to build a D.

Are you suggesting that someone will trade up for either Carter or Anderson? And the QB needy teams do what?

He's terrible IMO. I don't buy much of this argument...or any of it for that matter, but time will tell who is right. To me, he's a 3rd stringer. He's got zero it factor, zero ability to play off schedule isn't a leader type, and his accuracy is poor, especially outside the numbers. There's nothing in his game that I like. He's terrible and needs a one-way ticket to splittsville. He'll be out of the league or at best a long-term hanger-on'er that never does diddly squat.
