2022 OTA’s Mini Camp And Pre Season

So far, it looks like Scharping is the starting LG. Hopefully Green can beat him out.
The Chronicle is no longer delivered to Brazoria County, so I really don't keep up with what's going on. I'm also taking a hiatus from listening to the radio.

What is this, mini camp? How many days are we into this? Are any rookies "starting"? At this stage of pre season preparation, I wouldn't think so. They all should be getting reps.

NFL ROSTER CUTDOWN DATES

Per usual, teams can carry up to 90 players through the summer, and will start downsizing their roster during the preseason slate.

The first reduction will come by Aug. 16, after the first weekend of exhibition play. Teams must get down to 85 players by 4 p.m. ET on that Tuesday.

That’ll be followed by the second and third waves on Aug. 23 and Aug. 30, respectively, when rosters must go from 85 to 80 and then 80 to 53.

Well, I'm hearing that Scharping has come into OTA's in better shape than he's ever been in as a Texan. Maybe someone told him if he didn't get his **** together, he'd be walking the street.

It would be nice if Scharping can provide meaningful competition and quality depth at the interior OL spots. I don’t see him as a player who will develop into a quality starter which is the expectation for his draft slot. I would be surprised if he makes the team. Even more surprised if he receives a second contract with this team.

Same as I heard. Someone must have gotten into his ear last year, because he has transformed from the Pillsbury doughboy to a beach hard body. Now let's see if it translates to performance on the field...............not "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane."

I think the Texans are stocked personnel wise at the Guard positions. I’ve mentioned in the past and I’ll mention it again….I’d like to see Scharping get time Center and see if he could compete with that group.

"It all starts up front for us," Hamilton said. "Saying that is not just cliché. We really feel like our offensive lineman are playmakers as well."
Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil returns. So does Tytus Howard, who filled in for Tunsil late in 2021 at left tackle, after playing the first half of last fall at left guard. Howard spent most of 2019 and 2020 at right tackle. Justin Britt started 11 games at center last season, and signed a new deal with the club last month. Charlie Heck enters his third year in the NFL after starting 13 times at right tackle. Max Scharping has started a combined 33 times since he was drafted in 2019. Add in A.J. Cann, who comes to town after starting 94 games at right guard in Jacksonville since 2015, and the Texans have a mix of experience and styles up front.

"It's always important to have guys that are somewhat proven commodities, guys that you know what you are going to get on gameday, and you know what you are going to expect and that's what we feel like those guys bring to the table," Hamilton said. link

In 2020 TC. Scharping was experimented at center.........never saw center before........or after. Too much "versatility by our past OL, has led to "jack of all trades, master at none"..........resulting in poor development and no stability of the OL over the past years.

This year, I hope the Texans decide on the starting OL lineup going into TC, with "versatility" only used in deciding alternate depth in cases of injury.

You see Green at RG?
Wasn't Green very versatile, playing all over the OLine, in college but I dunno if Cann played primarily RG or LG in the past ?
What's the important parameters to be considered in determining which side of the center these two guys play for the Texans ?

Cann was a RG, Green moved around but mostly a LG. I would leave them in the positions they are used to. Green may be able to get some more physicality out of Tunsil.

Anybody know anything about UDFA Troy Hairston? I can’t find anything in detail about the guy. I was just curious because he’s listed as a DL at 5-11’ 245#’s. He excelled at his college level.

Wow… earned a starting spot in OTAs. KG is either a baaaad man or the Texans are a baaaad team

maybe both

Lovie strikes me as a coach who doesn’t play coy with the media like OB. It was always an eye roll when OB would act like a first round pick wasn’t locked into a starting spot. And a complete facepalm when he actually went ahead and started Tom Savage over WD40 for a half of football.

I love that Lovie flat out said the CBs weren’t good enough last season and completely revamped the position group.

Interior OL drafted in the first round are day one starters. No sense acting like they aren’t yet.

I expect Mills to step up. His physique has stayed the same....... so I doubt his power has change.

Granted he has the accuracy, but you have to drive that rock in the NFL. If he has not gotten stronger he cant have that velocity.

Just from what I am seeing in the videos. Too much reliance on accuracy still. Possibility he still has the noodle arms. Make me sad.

"Too much reliance on accuracy" said no NFL evaluator ever, in the history of evaluations.

So now Mills has a noodle arm?

I can see you didn't watch the games last year. Or if you did you saw what you wanted to see.

Mills has an above avg arm. Look back at what Cooks/Collins said about Mills arm, they said he can really spin it.

It's not a noodle arm, but it's NFL average "at best". I think what shizzle was getting at is that accuracy is fine - but not in the absence of enough arm strength to really drive the ball on those out routes, etc. NFL corners will anticipate and step in front of the WR and boom - TO. It will be very accurate, right into the DB's hands.

Shizzle doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
In that video it showed him driving the ball when needed, putting some touch when needed and leading his receivers.

The man talking about he needs to buff up. Too funny. That youngster was standing tall in the pocket, delivering the pass while taking big shots. Got up, ready for the next play.

His TD/INT ratio was pretty good over the last 5 games. Hopefully we'll see more of that in the future.

There isn't a throw that Mills can't make. He has plus arm strength.

?
How many TOs did he throw last season?

His TD/INT ratio was pretty good over the last 5 games. Hopefully we'll see more of that in the future.

If you averaged out his last 5 games and projected them over a 17 game season:

4,277 Yards
31 TD
7 INT
103.9 Rate

You know.....those wouldn't be half bad considering the team he played on last season. Things may get better in 2022 b/c of the new offensive pieces added.

Also:
1. 2020: Deshaun Watson- 4,823 Yards
2. 2009: Matt Shaub- 4,770 Yards
3. 2010: Matt Shaub- 4,370 Yards

5. 2018: Deshaun Watson- 4,165 Yards

2. Derek Stingley Jr. did very little work today with the team. I would characterize it as a mental rep day as he participated in walkthroughs. Lovie Smith spoke glowingly after the practice about his defensive back room and said he expects Stingley Jr. to play in training camp. I would not be concerned with Stingley Jr.'s load management at this point.

3. Speaking of the new defensive backs, Steven Nelson showed up big in the workout. Nelson had a diving pass breakup and was constantly around the play as the veteran outside cornerback. He was covering well underneath and deep all day. He is ahead of where previous veteran corners have been in this defense.

4. Desmond King is flying around the field. King darted into a nearly completed pass and batted it away. It was as clean as clean could be from a timing standpoint. It will be interesting to see how King develops with an additional year in Lovie Smith's defense.

5. It wasn't a great day for the wideouts. There were a few drops, and no deep completions seemed to materialize. Brandin Cooks is quick in finding space and being available for a pass. No other wideouts stood out today.

6. Rookie wide receiver John Metchie's recovery is hard to pinpoint. He doesn't stretch with the team in team stretch and hardly does anything resembling a drill. Metchie though is not working out on other fields with players working back from injury. He does catch balls from time to time though. Lovie Smith simply said the expectation is for Metchie to improve each day and he's doing well in that regard. The head coach refused to put a timetable on Metchie's workout debut but did praise players who amassed mental reps when they couldn't work out.

7. Veteran wideout Chris Conley had a ball bounce off his hands for a near interception. The near interception was almost made by rookie linebacker Christian Harris. Harris was distraught that he couldn't reel in the ball, but it was fun to see the linebacker cover a wide receiver.

8. While the wideouts didn't stand out today, the tight ends did, but in a bad way. I will have to go look, and maybe I am being too harsh through just two practices, but this is one of the more unimpressive tight end groups in recent memory for the Texans.

10. Dameon Pierce should excite fans of the team. The fourth-round rookie flashed a few times in this workout. Once he beat a linebacker to the sidelines, planted, and turned around for an easy catch and nice gain. Later in running drills, Pierce's rep looked among the most successful in gaining yards. Pierce is fighting for opportunities, but fighting for more chances with the ball in his hand is a great sign for the future of the rushing attack.

11. Rex Burkhead was asked about Pep Hamilton's offensive system and somehow morphed his answer into praise of starting quarterback Davis Mills. "I think Davis (Mills) has done a great job making sure that we're all in the right place. He's so comfortable this year and in the spring and really with the playbook." Burkhead went on to detail how Mills was instructing players where to be on newly installed plays and called that "pretty awesome" for a second-year quarterback.
